Hey, that's me! Thanks for the feedback and upgrade options on my build, Paul 🙂 You nailed it with the monitors; started off with the 1080p one and purchased the 1440p one a few years later. I've debated upgrading the platform to DDR5 as you pointed out, however, instead of going for a 13th/14th gen CPU, I'm considering waiting for 15th gen to hopefully have a better CPU upgrade path down the road. As a side note, at the time when I purchased the 12600k + mobo (combo for $255 USD), the equivalent DDR5 RAM and Z690 mobo was close to $350 USD by itself, not factoring in the cost of the CPU. As others have pointed out, Canadian pricing on tech and hardware in general is 10-15% higher than US folks unfortunately. The 4090 FE "blank canvas" build was fantastic value AND performance, even factoring in a slightly overpriced GPU!
Dude -- nothing against Paul but AMD is absolutely smoking Intel as of right now and 12 months from now the situation for Intel is going to be even more dire. Further beyond 12 months things may start to get even again. I recommend seriously looking at your upgrade paths before making a decision.
>better upgrade path >intel Choose one... not to mention the next gen won't even have hyperthreading and potentially less cores... That said, if you can wait, ALWAYS wait to see what other options come around with the new intel and amd cpus coming up...
@@MattJDylan Worst comes to worst, if 15th gen isn't great, 13th and 14th gen CPUs and mobos will likely drop in price anyways so works out that way. Could always go AMD as well with a 7800X3D or 8000 X3D equivalent if it makes more sense, price to performance wise 👍
@@NoobSniper yeah exactly! Having more options viable options is always best, even when it means waiting some months for new stuff to come out: if worst comes to worst, decent older stuff will get cheaper (like intel 12th gen or radeon 6000 gpus)
Glad to see you do this type of content. Jason of pcbuilder does videos regularly. I like the variation of thoughts on part component matches for best price to performance.
To be fair, when the price difference isn't huge, having the igpu can come in handy in a lot of ways (troubleshooting or gpu suddenly dying, to name a couple)
I’m glad to see you still making videos. I wanted to thank you for helping me build my first PC. I learned from the Newegg 3 part series. Small Upgrade: Replacing my B450 Motherboard/w a B550 Model to house my New Ryzen 7 5700X 3D CPU & my RX7600xt GPU. B450 Motherboard being Sent Out for RMA to Gigabyte Canada.
I too am still on anAM4 platform and had recently upgraded from an R5 3600 to an R7 5800x3D when I saw it went on sale for less than 290 bucks, I then added a second 16GB kit of Vengeance LPX 3200 cl16 to get a total of 32GB of 3200 cl16 RAM. This removed all the hitching and stuttering I had initially experienced in Cyberpunk 2077. Also agreed that the Thermalright heatsink is more than enough for the AMD processors. This video has been very validating for my upgrade decisions.
Curious what graphics card you're using, and what resolution and refresh rate you're targeting, I've also got a 3600 and am thinking of upgrading to a 5800x3d (rtx 3070, 1440p 60hz) but am trying to decide whether to do that or to upgrade my monitor first
I have a Gigabyte Eagle 6700XT. So far most of the displays I have access to are 1080p, I aim for 70 - 80 FPS so that I can limit it back down to 60 fps and feel good that even in the heat of things, I'll still have enough headroom to push out my display's refresh rate. While the R5 3600 worked great for optimized current titles like Doom and gave me adequately high enough average frame rates in Cyberpunk (around 70-75fps at 1080p native) and RoboCop: Rogue City that used the new UE5 engine, I'd get hitching and stuttering in Cyberpunk in particular and less so (but still noticeable stutters) in RoboCop. Changing graphical settings would raise the average FPS numbers but didn't solve the hitching, which led me to believe that the R5 3600 was getting a little long in the tooth, so I pulled the trigger when I noticed the 5800X3D went on sale.
Great series and lessons for the newbie builders. Hair pulling stuff seeing a low TDP chip being paired with a 360 AIO. Here's hoping this video can reach many peeps so that they don't post silly builds on Reddit. Having said that Paul, after my recent RMA experiences with Corsair who upgraded my PSU when I received a faulty replacement unit, I would go with Corsair even if it means spending extra simply for their after sales support. I've never experienced anything like it.
Loving this series mate, keep em coming! Im building a new PC soon and have most of my parts I wish you had done this series sooner I would of submitted my parts :) Keep the videos coming
Great advice on the upgrades, Build 3 is a awesome example, of how to balance a system. I think if you can afford over $2k for a video card, you can afford an SSD with Gen4 PCIe and dedicated cache.
Paul, there's much talk and reviews about graphics cards but nothing about monitors and what to look for. I would think that both items and cables would be part of the graphics content to realize a super decent experience in either gaming or in all around computer needs.
I have just purchased a 4090 graphics card. Would it be ok to share with you my current PC components and get your opinion on whether I need to upgrade any of them?
To think over a year ago I got a 12900k, Asus Z790 motherboard and 32gb 6000 GSKill DDR5 ram at MicroCenter for a total of $325. Thats why I only shop there. 10 minutes away
For the last build i would change into a cheaper case but with good airflow like the Antec Performance 1 FT. Or even cheaper Lian-Li Lancool 216. And then get a 1000W+ PSU instead. That 850W is a bit on the low side for a 4090 system.
Nice video. My R5 3600 machines will likely get 5700X upgrades at some point, but they're not my main game machines so it's less of an issue as their GPU's are the bottleneck at the moment. Only thing I don't really agree with is spending extra for WiFi on an ATX motherboard. It's something most will never need or use and a wired connection is going to be more consistent for gaming. I'd shift the difference in price to storage or peripherals or a good Cat6e cable. If it was a Mini-ITX build, then yeah, it's effectively portable so you could run into scenarios where WiFi's your only option. Plus it's generally included on most boards that size anyway.
Asrock boards are normally fine, I do have a minor gripe with how they label m.2 drive generations and the way they layout the bios. Its doesn't amount to much more than minor annoyances.
Welcome back to PC Part Builder! I’m ……… I’m …….. 😐 …….. Paul. 😂 Good episode bro! I couldn’t help myself. 🤙 Edit: I was just catching up on “Boost My Build” on Jason’s channel, when I got the notification for this vid.
Worth noting that unless they plan on replacing entirely, buying ddr5 now makes more sense because when Intel launches the next platform it will likely be ddr5 only going forward. So if they plan on upgrading and not changing everything they can save a little bit. If they already have a ddr4 system I'd say unless essential upgrading to a Intel system might be worth waiting for Intel core ultra 200 (terrible naming Intel! ) and grab clearance 1700 socket boards if they still want that to save even more. With the recent top end Intel chip issues might also be better to avoid these until that gets resolved.
Hi, been sub on your chanel for a long time,im looking currently to upgrade my pc, can i get your opinion on what should I get, im looking to upgrade the processor, graphic and maybe the motherboard? Paul, your first review you you mention the Z690 or Z790 and there are many but you mentioned overclocking.... Don't most motherboards overclock by default?
One thing that was overlooked since there's so many things to consider so I get it... not all drives that have dram cache list that they do. Perfect example the Team MP34 that was cheaper than the MP33 Paul chose at 12:42 has a dram cache, but doesn't list it. IMO better to get the dram drive so you're less boxed in if you ever pick up heavier work loads that would be slowed down by not having the cache. Paying more is debatable in it's value, but in this example the drive with dram was cheaper. Also, I agree Paul I don't get why some people get the ick when you talk about Asrock mobos, like they split off from ASUS and are just as good as MSI and Gigabyte mobos in quality/issues. My B650 Live mixer has been fine for me. Besides last few times CPU's have had issues it's been ASUS boards that are overvolting and causing damage.
But, the problem if you upgrade to a higher Intel SKU, you're gonna have to use a watercooler and that will factor into the budget, so just upgrading to an i7 from an i5 is not that easy nowadays.
Why sort by memory timings and not just everything under 10-11ns under first word latency? I use this feature exclusively since they introduced it. Am I missing something?

Welcome to the hellscape that is the Canadian PC price market, and why manufacturers need to reign it in (and I lived in the US until 2 years ago). The prices are ludacris in the US and out of reach for much of the population elsewhere. I'll have to keep my eyes out for the next one, I plan on finally doing a new build this year, despite all the above-mentioned problems, and would love to get another opinion.
I was just going to say this, it's not worth giving for a really small savings. I have a 12700k, a 13700k, a 13900k, and a 12900kf, I move them around, and I am always limited on use cases for the 12900kf
Paul, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question, but... Would you be able to help those of us troubleshoot Windows Security App not opening on Windows 11? I recently upgraded from Windows 10 and since then, I have not been able to turn on my firewall or open the Windows Security App without it closing out.
And now all the builds from The Dark Times come home to roost, when there were shortages of everything, everything was too expensive, and people ended up with builds that were not ideal *at the time* and games have only gotten more demanding.
You can find used RX 580s for less than $100 (at least in the US). It's much better than the GT 640 and will probably work well with the monitor you already have (can't imagine it's that strong since you're coming from an old and weak card).
Unless you're looking to build a ddr5-capable system, you're better off getting used parts from eBay. Also, it's funny that Gigabyte has always made excellent mobos but still can't get over the exploding PSU scandal.
To be fair, their mobos also had a ton of issues last year or the year before with security vulnerabilities and installing software without permission. Honestly, they've had quite a bit of drama in the last year lol

I'll have to keep my eyes out for the next one, I plan on finally doing a new build this year, despite all the above-mentioned problems, and would love to get another opinion.
Excellent
Good stuff
lets goooooo stay happy brah
Video editing should not go with F SKUs. Quicksync is too valuable to give up.
If i was buying a NEW motherboard in 2024 and Wi-Fi is important I would definitely favor Wi-Fi 6/Wi-Fi 7 (AX/BE)
And now all the builds from The Dark Times come home to roost, when there were shortages of everything, everything was too expensive, and people ended up with builds that were not ideal *at the time* and games have only gotten more demanding.
I have an GT 640 and would like to upgrade. $100 any ideas?
You can find used RX 580s for less than $100 (at least in the US). It's much better than the GT 640 and will probably work well with the monitor you already have (can't imagine it's that strong since you're coming from an old and weak card).
these are luxury probs - wait for a year for the best upgrade if you can
Cool !
No point changing mobo to similar mobo with ddr5. Just get faster ddr4 with more capacity ram sticks.
Asus has the 4090 tuf 1599
PCPP... best game that was never intended to be a game 😂
Woot!
“You can run two
Monitors off your graphics card, that’s fine…” umm unless you are using an AMD card my man😂
Unless you're looking to build a ddr5-capable system, you're better off getting used parts from eBay.
@@Zxanonblade The entire am5 platform had a lot of growing pains, but Ga seemed to fix those issues quicker than most.
Thank you for finally discussing components using a currency OTHER THAN US. Hey Americans, now it's your turn to go look up the difference 🤪
Can we rally for a month of no 4090 crap? It's $2000 and the realistic amongst us are looking for realistic parts 😂
Its real for people like me that need the horse power in rendering and 24gb vram is good long term. Looking at all the other cards for years i have finnaly realized top end nvidia is what i need for business and some gaming. Rest is build to suck wich is dam shame. No more 1080s. 😢6
My car costs less than that pc 😂
Who noticed the Arabic text and paused to read it 😅?
👍
Dell Optiplex or ban 😂😂😂
SCREW 1440! 4K OR NO WAY!
Let's #go 💪 🌋 💪 🌋 💪 🌋 💪 🌋 💪 🌋 💪 🌋 💪
Every MoBo that's ever died on me (3 in ~15 years) has been ASRock. Definitely leaves a bad taste in your wallet.
🤟
.
Bronze PSU in 2024? 90's all over again.
mb
PC builder does a better job at this. Pick a lane.
