The Biltmore Castle in Ashville NC is a example of how being totally self sufficient, they grew all their fruits and vegetables in Greenhouses and had a huge Plant Room with Orange and Lemons growing!
Considering that big vertical farms are failing without first building a sustainable power station to power the lights, it seems, they have more design and planning to do.
@@KarlMarshall yeah similar principle, except the developers are using cranes, which can actually be lowered and built underground,. They don’t have to be above ground wind farms.
Yeah I would like to see us completely off fossil fuels in my lifetime, which really we should already be, there’s so many ways to harvest energy now and our tech is defo there.
Ever notice how the 'solutions' for the 'future' are always so awful? Like people raving about ahipping containers stacked on top of each other as a good thing?!
If they're being able to produce an all year product, that is equal quality on a greater mass and doesn't require covering our countryside in pesticides. In the country. Why is that awful? Seems like a win on so many levels.
Well, actually as the climate is changing itwill. The days in summer are getting hotter so solar panels will help reduce much of excess sunlight that eventually hits the plants below, but not too much, as solar panels as they don’t fully cover them up, so on average grass actually does pretty damn well. Including multiple other crops. This combined use of farming is increasing now month by month across Europe.
Scotland has 505 MW of solar installed capacity. That’s 4,203 GWh annual at 95% efficiency. (95% efficiency is what coal and gas power plants run at.) In 2022 Scotland generated 455 GWh of electricity from solar. That’s just under 11% efficiency.
When the technology for being able to beam solar power from space with a sender and a receiver is when all electricity will be dirt cheap. The technology is already there just not at this scale YET
I’m really liking this. Hoping it all goes well. Some vertical farming factories have gone under in recent months/years that weren’t able to live up to their promise or weren’t able to optimise in time, so I hope these people here can prove some of the critics wrong.
When people can just grow their own food it seems slightly non essential and an ill and morally bankrupt arrangement of priorities when it comes to energy if the government invested in this.

the little book “The nature of crop”, by John M. Warren, sums up so well with lots of humour on last few thousands years how challenging (at times embarrassing) for us to grow enough crops to stay alive. So good that UK with such an enormous v.farm w/ price still competitive with S. Africa, Spain or so. This would give critical “insurance” for food security when extreme weathers increasingly happen more worldwide in decades ahead. 🤞Well done UK.

It doesn’t matter how it’s grown; most people are looking at the price now. If we want naturally grown food, we shouldn’t allow supermarkets to take over the market. We are to blame for our failure.

That's why they're blocking out the sun!

The write off of facilities make it that vertical farming is never economical feasable. Proven by countless bankrupcies.
Its been like this in Singapore for over a decade
Definitely helpful for big cities to reduce supply chain size
Yes absolutely!
This is niche. Maybe used for up market crops to wealthy buyers. Meanwhile ordinary farmers will continue to feed the public at large. ❤🎉
The Musk plan would involve American farmers feeding us
Yeah i agree, but that's how any emerging tech starts. Will be interesting to see how it goes in the next 20 years
But why tax farmers? Lol what's wrong with corporations, footballers and celebrities?

Explore the ways gravity can be used to make cheap energy. Still don’t understand why it’s so difficult to pursue this route. It seems very viable.
The elites can't make money on cheap stuff and the government can't tax it much.
