I remember watching this movie with my housband on DVD.....After the end we just look at each other and said: "Let's watch this again". And we literally watch the movie two times in a row 'till 3 A.M.
What a magnificent piece of silent acting by the lead actor and actress and also James Cromwell,John Goodman, Ed Lauter, who says silent films are dead and gone this movie is just unstoppable and difficult to put down it is brilliantly acted and directed and its just an all round great movie Silent it may be but even without words on the screen you can understand what these guys are saying and doing, its just so well acted you can see the emotions on everyone's faces just knowing what they are doing and saying It is one of the best movies I have ever seen just blindingly beautiful and so well done An unmissable movie just unmissable and just so watchable and hard to stop watching even though it's a silent movie its lovely and so romantic
My kids are learning about the 1920s in homeschool. We talked about films of the time, and they we’re amazed that a silent film won the Academy Award just 10 years ago! They were amazed by this trailer, and want to see “The Artist” now. Can’t wait to show it to them!
It just pulled on your heart strings so much, but without trying so hard...or maybe they did try hard but it didn't feel like they did. It is a familiar plot, but performances were amazing and story had a nice catch to it.
@@javierburgos7 Silent films did have sound effects an example with MODERN TIMES a salesmen did play a record that did have talking in it but the characters did not talk with the exception of Charlie Chaplin singing . I have not yet seen this film so I cannot give a complete answer.
This movie is so good, I only hope and pray it isn't forgotten over time. It just takes you right out of yourself, you get sucked right in and it doesn't let you go until its magnificent end. Won the Best Picture Oscar and totally deserved it.
To pull this off, to make this look authentic is simple put, astounding. I adore this movie. In such an age where movies are rebooted, oooooh look another remake!!! Oh goodie another super hero movie. This movie took guts, its stellar. Pay attention to the details. They shirley don't make them like this anymore. (yes I said shirely.)
Just bought 3 best picture winners from a Movie store they were: Braveheart, Argo, and this film. I am interested in seeing this now after reading the comments. I didn't realize the movie was entirely silent.
The film was a great ode to silent movies and ode hollywood. I also found the story quite moving in the sense there were many silent film stars whos careers came to an end because of the advent of sound
I saw this movie in Moving Image class and I am amazed. The end had us all shocked to be honest. I don’t want to say any spoilers, but honestly, we jokingly said that the dog was clearly the star here.
10 years since it opened in my old neighborhood at manlius art cinema! I remember going with my dad to see it I felt like it would appeal to him being that it's a throwback to silent black and white films I like Jean DuJardin, he reminds me of Clark Gable and this was my first introduction to Berenice Bejo The supporting cast is awesome too from James Cromwell to John Goodman to Missi Pyle to Ed Lauter to Malcolm McDowell Shows how an entertainment artist is at the top of his career but as time moves forward into talkies he's constantly torn from staying put or being forced to change with everyone and everything No dialogue until the very end but a sensational piece of old Hollywood
Except that the lead actress doesn't look like actresses did then. The casting director made a very poor choice, very biased towards the 21st century. I wouldn't put her in a film set before WWII, at best, but she conforms more to maybe 50s or later. Go look up Mary Pickford, Olive Thomas, Lillian Gish and Clara Bow and you'll get it.
A depressing True Story to the musical score: @1:33 The music is from the film "The Life of David Gale" a film directed by Alan Parker. This film was reviewed so poorly and did so badly at the box office no one hired him ever again, and it ended up costing him his directing career. No one wanted to work with him after and was forced to retire. 17 years after this last film of his he passed away in 2020.

Great movie but uses " Sing Sing Sing " by Benny Goodman and his orchestra which was recorded in 1937, ten years after the film is set ( 1927 ). A minor point I know 😊
It's a beautiful film, it you still lived in the Silent Screen days ! To think hollywood has come as far as we have and then THINK that this film is great is a joke ! This is what happens when those who can't, try to remake what was already done. This is not an ART FILM. The majority of the audiences loved this film. I, for one, did not. The ORIGINAL creators of this type of film were the real talents. They had no modern technology to smooth out the imperfections, and what you saw was real creativity. This is just modern technology rehash. Anyway, for those of you who love this movie, congratulations, you're just the audience they were hoping for.
There are a lot of opinions about the female lead being wrongfully cast. Sometimes it is done on purpose to show that the actress she portrayed was not a good actress either. Other times you don't get the actress/actor your wanted either because you get forced into hiring an actor because of their connections or because they want somebody who us considered "bankable" and the studio ultimately had the final say in everything that happens in the movie. I'm getting ready to watch this movie now so my opinion may change and I can be completely agreeable.
Berenice bejo is the directors wife. But i think shes really beautiful, tall, and only four years younger than jean dujardin. Who do you think would have been better cast - anne hathaway?
@@xisigma I feel that the female lead was wrongfully cast. I can´t say why exactly, but it may be because she look so different to other actresses in similar (old) movies -who where younger with softer facial features that represents the innocence and naivety of a female that is new in the industry, like Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor, Virginia Cherrill, Edna Purviance, Nancy Olsson among so many others. Many great silent films like The Lost World, The Phantom of The Opera, The Man who Laughs, City Lights, A Song of Two Humans amongst others. The lead actress in this movie (The Artist) had sharp featuress and more Testosterone than me! She even looked muscular in some scenes. She just didn´t seem to really transmit what her role (ie the idea of her character) was meant to be. When I see Debbie Reynolds in Singing in the Rain, she melts my heart, and this actress just didn´t have that magnetism, she didn´t evoke that emotion that the old actress did.
I think she fits the movie magnificently. she plays the part brilliantly; no one could have done it better. She is one brilliant actress and shows a lovely side to her character in her relationship. with the artist she was made to star in this movie sorry to disagree
