- In this video, we spoke with Christopher Weil, Head of BMW Exterior Design, to learn more about the new styling of the 2025 BMW X3 M50. This is the first ever X3 M50 replacing the outgoing X3 M40i.
It's also the only new BMW X3 with this type of a kidney grille. We also explore the rear-end of the car with a new taillight design and of course, the quad pipes.
Next, we move inside the car to see the design changes. The 2025 BMW X3 comes with iDrive 8.5, a flat-bottom steering wheel, new seats and fabric, and a new console layout.

The front doesn’t look like M50. Looks more like an EV
It's purposely similar to the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, since that will be the new iX3 next year. They want them to still have some similarity.
This design could be a final heart massage for the dying BMW design line.

The X5 LCI is the now probably the best car BMW make. However, I am in no doubt that they will screw up the next gen of that model too

BMW apparently love to piss people off for including more exclusive M design elements into their normal lineup. It started first with the mirror caps and now you can get quad pipes exhausts, M flippers behind the steering wheel. So, what’s next? The S65 Twin Turbo engine as a M40 lineup?…

You should have been ashamed of yourself when you agreed with that designer to call this interior crap as a high quality.
Even the base Corolla is now more luxurious than a BMW.
Cheap and crappy materials, plastic everywhere, and back seats that couldn't be cheaper than a base Kia Rio.
They even removed the back ambient lightning
Every new bmw that comes out gives me more respect for the last generation. I never knew they can get more ugly but bmw surprises me every year.
Great job, as always, Horatiu. I see a lot of the new X1 and even the XM (especially the rear) in this new design. Thank god for the blacked out M grille because that chrome one on the 30 is… something. Ha.
What the hell is happening at BMW
I think BMW hired blind people in their design department and they can’t get rid of them anymore. So, they just have to do with what they have got. I don’t know, it’s just getting worse with every generation onwards. I guess…😔
The Korean brands stole their designers so they just hired a hobo off the street to replace them.
Interior design is horrid. Exterior is OK but the closed kidney grill is a let down. I think BMW have missed the mark on this one...
As a current 21 x3m owner. The 22 was decent, but the new look of the 2025 not a fan. Its not ugly, but just not what I expected for the new x3.

I bought only M cars for performance but also because they were distinguishable from regular BMWs. I am glad that I refused to take delivery of 24’ X5MC and opted to keep my 20’ X5MC and use the money towards my 911 instead.
Monolithic design reminds me on the new MINI Countryman which lack of unnecessary lines. Looks more elegant.

@@wp8478 x4 sales are completely down when compared to X6 and X2, therefore adding the point where the next gen 4 series to be axed as well
X4 is coming to the U.S. as a 2027 model. Release date mid 2026.

The Traditional Angel Eyes are dead now unfortunately and it was their signature design.. you would know it's a BMW in pure darkness but not anymore ... You wouldn't know what your looking now if this X3 was in pure darkness

Got the X4 M40i here and was going to get a 430i for a daily now that the milage is getting up there ( had a M3 but live an learn..it wasn't taken care previously and I was impulsive lol. Darn bearings went on the drive home lol one thing won't have to.worry about in an all electric..

As a current 23 x3M40 customer. ….it looks okay , but was hoping something more sportier. You all making me want to go to Mercedes GLC 43 AMG and I SERIOUSLY don’t want to go that route. I love the B58 I definitely need to see it in a different color, this looks to bubbly bloated looking! Ion know BMW ugh! WTF Christopher
But with GLC you will get 2.0l engine

Id reserve judgement until you see it in a color that is actually sporty. That and spacing the wheels out a little more and this will look 🤌🏽
@@Fredthegod1990 yes ! My current x3 is black with black wheels. I definitely need to spec one out online and see one in person. The dashboard is umm, idk just yet I definitely need see it in person as well.
Went with the X4 M40i. As far as AMG, got a slk55 AMG used for my daily for 7 years .. almost 200000 on it and still going. Made an impulse buy once on a 2004 M3 because well.. you know lol. Everything seemed good. But car wasn't maintained previously and the bearings disintegrated on the drive home .. did get it running again..but that was an expensive lesson lol.

I think the new X3 looks more younger and fancy. It looks very nice. But rear lights should more nice.
Conclusion: The Designers want made X3 much uglier, but something went wrong, and they created not the baddiest BMW of today. It looks like a car (this is great achievement for them). Exept grill on Not_the_M-style models.
I have a 2022 X3 and I ordered winter tires 🛞 for it, do you know if my 2022 tires 🛞 will fit this 2025 model ?

Imagine being the passenger and looking at the bare dash in front of you that has to go,
Looks very nice.
The Good - Interior looks more modern, there's less clutter. Will always miss the physical buttons.
Bad - Sloping roofline makes it look more like a crossover than an SUV.
Ugly - That front grille is messed up real bad, slant lines, camera sticking out, and a big chunk of sensor making it all inconsistent. The back seems to have been stuck by something.
Nevertheless, this will still remain BMW's bestseller.
It looks more interesting than GLC tbh, and it's engine lineup has variety compared to GLC, all 4 cylinder lineup? Kinda reminds me of Volvo
And it seems the front cooling vents for the front wheels are gone. Replaced by fake black decors

Not as classically handsome as its predecessor which had softer edges. But this time, BMW went with sharp lines, which of course is their current design language. But definitely better looking than the GLC, to these eyes.
I like the design but tell me that if somebody bumps your car the tail gate isn’t going to be the point that’s hit.
The comment section is hating as usual, but that's the first recent BMW design that's actually great. They kept all the signature BMW traits like the shoulder line, the hoffmeister kink, and the normal sized kidneys. The car has an amazing stance and silhouette. The tail light design is amazing. The design is not fussy and holistic. Awesome job, BMW!

Not bad (iam x3 Owner). Back nice, like XM but normal size. But the front, well X2 has more character (that case back is terrible).
Very informative interview Horatiu. You don't pull the punches. Christopher was nice and uncomfortable there a few times. BMW really need to know that they're going down a wrong path here. You can have all the philosophies you want... if it's killing the brand, they're really no good.
Part of the job to ask all the relevant questions. Comfortable or not 😉
As an x4 2022 owner… it’s a shame that they did not updated the x4. This x3 it’s boring on the outside. It’s not giving me that sporty look, but I guess that’s what the x3 it’s all about. Terrible decision on not making a new x4 for a sportier look.
Went with the X4 M40i over the X3. I thought the X4 handled better imo.. only downside is the blind spots .. other than that, I like my x4.
Front headlights look like Mazda
A very controversial design. Civilian BMWs are now indistinguishable from M. The design of the M-style mirrors is very strange and the headlights too. Why are not all the lights on at the back, but only part of them? What will they do with X4 :(
P.S. Where are the new M seats? The design of the triangular headrests is infuriating.
And continue my dissatisfaction. Didnt BMW say this X3 was gonna have high end material usually seen in say more expensive X5s. I cannot see evidence of any of that in this production model.
And M50 design is not aggresive enough. And ok, the new X1 and C3 M35i all have that beauitful clam shell single piece sports seat with M badge. The X3 M50 doesnt have it? Why, whats the thinking??

The design is good, but I would have preferred one similar to the previous design. It will grow on most people and everyone will love it. New designs are always strange at first sight if they differ from previous design. The only thing that I like the least are those L shaped lights on the headlamps. Reminds me of the GLE ones that I also hated

Now it looks as ugly as iX, well done BMW. I’ll keep my m40i till it starts falling apart (awesome car btw), or switch to a different brand. The drive train is good though.

Wow, so much words wasted about that ugly sensor into that kidney grills and leaving out lines, designwise. And what's up with that too much pianoblack plastic guys?! I don't know what's wrong lately with BMW, it's like they suffering with identity loss. The previous generation was much more beautiful and sincere. This new design descision is in contradictory with itself. The badging between two font sizes is also ugly as hell. Change is not always better and more beautiful BMW. 🤔🤦😩🤢🤮

Now I will rant about how ugly the car exteriors are or how boring the interiors are, let us talk objective:
1.) No Engine Insulation
2.) No door Grab handles
3.) No gear selector lever
4.) Boring screens, that too with disproportionate bezels in both the joined screen units.
5.) No driver side wallet cubby space.
6.) Rear bumber is not protecting the car body, design fail would lead to immediate dents at rear.
7.) No recline for rear seats.
8.) No openable Sunroof
9.) Hidden tailpipes for non M.
10.) Poor quality materials indoor and outdoor.
11.) Many other small small thins.

In my opinion, interior and interior design lags behind Chinese models by some ten years. Predicting the future some twenty years ago, this would sound like science fiction, but that's how things are today.
Where did the luxury go in BMW’s interior design? Where’s the panels of wood/carbon fibre, high-grade leather, and real metal accentuations? This interior is nothing but plastic door panels, fabric on the dashboard, and gloss black touch points. Extremely disappointing interior quality.
They ruin the x3, such a boring looking car. Will keep my older model now for longer. No side vents, no classic sportier look. Just ugly. Need a redo. Fire the designers please.

Why BMW? why? this looks appeals to teenagers playing with RGB colours. We’ve been a BMW family for almost 20 years with our E90 M3, G05 X5, and F13 coupe. First impression is horrendous. We know that you guys are trying to simplify the infotainment screen and the instrument cluster but that Straight horizontal screen just feels lazy. The second row seats looks compromised and looks a bit similar to the current generation. We were hoping this generation will a noticeable space increase. I miss the old BMW especially the F generation where the variety of materials in the interior such as the aluminum, carbon, leather in various colours gave the car character, elegance and finesse. This one Looks like a Playstation 5.
