      I work in HRand one reason why getting the data he's talking about is to prove to the government that you are adhering to EEO standards in the hiring process in its entirety and not just afterward.

      @baller that’s ignorant to believe that most companies are well diversified. I’ve been to companies that were not. For instance, one Asian company that I was offered a job at had only one white person working there. Not to mention, it’s pretty common for companies to have nothing but white men in leadership positions

    Thank you for posting this. I have been leery to disclose that I am a Black female so early in the application process. They can probably figure this out really easily on LinkedIn, but I have not been sure about including this. Also, I worry that declining to answer might make them think that there might be a reason why. I just feel like I should not be relevant.

      Totally agree that it SHOULD not matter and that the decision should be based on the merit of the candidate but rest assured it has no bearing on your application.

      I always answer with the mindset of if they are racist or misogynist let them weed me out early, and not even call me for an interview. It is sad to even have to consider that but hey...

      100% agree! It should be irrelevant. Last week a potential employer told me outright, "This company is all white men, and that's a problem. I'm on the phone with you because you are a woman."
      I was shocked and horrified, I just want to be chosen because I'm *qualified* for the job!

    I resist responding positively to questions regarding disabilities because I find a significant number of people are stupid, and I won’t reveal such private information to people who are, in fact, little more than a butt in a seat. There are things you don’t tell someone you don’t know, and there are some things you don’t even tell people you do know. There are disabilities that are hidden that don’t affect one’s ability to perform a job.

      Yes!! 100% this!I have dwarfism and hearing loss among others things. You cannot convince me that answering yes to the disability question is not a red flag to employers. It makes me so angry that people will not take a few minutes to educate themselves on disabilities (especially mental illness!) and have compassion. Choosing to be ignorant in the age of the internet is not cute or ok. I would not be surprised if I was discriminated against for my disability but it is under the guise of not enough experience.

    The disability question intimidates me. I don't know if my conditions are considered disabilities.
    Also, it's kinda hard to hide my gender on applications. I absolutely have had hiring managers make illegal comments about pregnancy though.

      Same, girl, same. My conditions definitely fit "disability" but that scares employers off. Even, if I don't need accomodation.

      I'd recommend trying to sue or tell the police.
      I'm often side lined bc of my religion (cant work friday nights and saturdays), when i am, i get offered a job and then i tell them that and they never call back to go sign the contract, i go right up to right advocate groups and give them 1 month of me calling every couple of days and sending emails. After that i'll call the advocacy group.
      The groups usually just call up HR, talk about what happened, tell them that not following up on a job offer due to religion is illegal and HR usually is back to me the next day to get me in to sign the job contract.

    You said, "no HR Person worth their weight....." (My experience) has been, they aren't much more than a butt in the chair to keep the company out of lawsuits, same as an attorney for the company. Useless for the employee rights. 😒

      It is. Plus the insurance co i worked for had another form-- if tbe person declined to self identify i had to fill out a form with about 6 categories on it fok r me and to select from on visual observation only. Larger companies use this both for promotional purposes and also cya. This is especially true if they handle any government contacts.

    I've always been worried about that...identifying as disabled. I've been afraid that the company will see how expensive (disability) I am and reject me. My illness has already cost me some of my dreams, I feel like it should not have weight on my app.

      If you’re qualified to do the job and you’re a good fit, it should have no bearing on getting the job. Target high quality employers.

      @@mudvayneknotquadra8037 yeah i was just telling another person the same; employers DO discriminate against disability all the time, its incredibly easy to do, as long as they dont say thats the reason you didnt get hired, and they did not mention disability when interviewing, they can have that reason, and they do. they can make their decision based on any assumption, as long as they dont voice it, their butts are covered. if youll notice most disabled people are unemployed, while most of them, can, and want, to work.

      @ALifeAfterLayoff you seem like a good person, and it sounds like you worked in some pretty good companies. But yes, please listen to disabled people. It is true that companies freak out about disability. Especially mental illnesses i would imagine. Which makes so angry , in the age of googling, you can’t just take a few minutes to research for example bipolar disorder? Or Deafness? I mention mental illness because I have loved ones with mental illnesses. It is not cool to choose to ignorant and have no compassion.
      I have dwarfism and hearing loss and I would not be surprised if it freaked out potential employers.

    I notice with some of the online applications - race doesn't always have a "do not disclose" option. Thought it was voluntary lol.

    If the internal recruiter never sees any of the disclosure forms, how could the company target minority groups? What's the point?

    So when you apply on indeed, the voluntary self-ID information is not viewable to the decision makers? It’s just used for Indeed’s internal data?

    It absolutely happens with any type of postal or civil service type position. It is very difficult for a white person to be hired there. And I fully approve of veterans preference but if you live in an area with a large military population annd you are not active duty or retired military then that might potentially knock you out of the running.

    What about declaring that you have a disability? Having many employees with disabilities could potentially increase the health insurance costs for the company. Isn't this an incentive for the company to turn down people with disabilities up front?

      I'm a recruiter and I've never known any ADA info before a candidate walks in the door. I've seen it after someone is hired but I've not seen before.

      @@Shannonbarnesdr1 I am diabetic, and surprisingly, every time I declare that I have a disability on an online job application, they don't even call me. I can't think about one single time when this hasn't been the case. Maybe it is a coincidence, but I find it hard to believe. This is why I always state that I don't have a disability on any job application that I submit.

    But they do see it if the company (a mass emailing “recruiting” company) sends you an email and asks for it!
    I have seen the questions at the end of an online application in a separate form that goes to another department. However, I am increasingly uncomfortable with the questions, except for a federal government contract where they are required to get that information. That’s ok!

    I didn't know what it was so.. I filled in name as ' I'm not disabled Wtf " employee ID; Johnny bravo date today's date, I hope I get accepted for this job, I have screwed up enough. It was my first time I ever seen that, it was weird to me. But I didn't have any choice but to write something there . I wanted to move to the next step. Maybe I should have watched this video first.

    If your last name is Perez or Patel, one can figure out the nationality! I always fill out the voluntary ID.

      Yes and no. If you are a woman it may be your married name. Also with "Latino" surnames, they may actually be a European Spaniard or Portuguese. Example: Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas...

      Nationality? Not necessarily... Keep in mind that nationality is completely different from race or ethnicity. Nationality is about citizenship.
      It upsets me when recruiters/ hiring managers assume nationality based on surnames. They may be passing up qualified candidates with legal permission to work because they assume the candidate will need visa sponsorship since they have a foreign-sounding name.

    Thanks for posting and going into detail about it. Very well done! im currently a realtor but looking for a remote job to supplement my income and since I've seperated from the Navy I've had 2 short term jobs one with Delta and the other with the U.S POSTAL SERVICE. And now that I want to go back to temporarily supplement my income I'm noticing these "volunteer disclosures " while I was reluctant, your explanation gave me a better understanding. However why not collect that data after the hiring process? Because whats the purpose of knowing who's applying based on those criteria if we all know its illegal for them to use it as a hiring tactic? Getting butts in seats should matter on skills and qualifications right? So why not get that after they've been hired 🤔 and yes while we know its illegal we know it happens especially when you look at the makeup of the company and there's no diversity. Unless the data collected is being used on many spectrums ie to gage those that apply and those that are hired or those with education or labored skills or opportunities 🤔

    So, if a certain segment of the general population (in the surrounding area) is not equally represented in the company, the company needs to take an action to increase that underrepresented group? Even if there are better qualified candidates in different segments of people?

    I fill it out for the sake of statistics. This way when it's reported by the media, some factual data can be collected and the media can be held accountable if they present false numbers.

    I am assisting another whom is "1-st time hire" as Radiology Technician;
    I have only had 2 experiences with recruiters at substantial levels;
    I am only familiar with a harder style which occurs in production on the shop floor;
    My case has a good personal presentation and has been told by the DM @ Walmart where she is handling the wine display that her's is best in the district;

      For others; If your target has "conferences" or the like which are open to public attend them if you can and linger; This is how professionals in search of clients to that; Each industry has variant styles and conformal societal protocol yet to get within speaking range of someone whom actually works there can often produce better lead's than 1,000 paper mail mass-mailings; I have heard of stacks of resume 5' tall in the corner and I got mine placed on the top of the pile but who has time to read all those?

    my opinion but it's discrimination. I get trying to advocate to have more XYZ applying but it's equality of opportunity, not the outcome. All recruiters should be doing is giving encouragement where it might be needed. As an example, Alberta/Canada has mandated that Edmonton/Area prison can only hire Native Persons and they cannot convince anyone (qualified or not) to take the positions so the prisons are not staffed. That is a straight-up discriminatory practice. It's not okay for any demographic to be discluded based on their race/gender etc

    For much of my adult life, I just identified as white. In the last 10 years, I started identifying as two or more races (I'm white and native american). If the id form is specific with races, I identify as white and native american/not hispanic. It's surprising how quickly I am hired. I must be a "quota female" which is fine with me.

    My main concern with this is that you can't really expect to have the same demographics in a pool of applicants compared to the geography. For example, women makeup 50.9 percent of the population. Let's imagine only 19 percent of total developers in the US are women (I don't know the real statistics)...then how can each company expect to have 50 percent of their developers be women? It would make more sense that the demographics of the employees match the demographics of the available pool of workers, and not the geographical demographics!

    I find it IS adverse when you have a disability or had a disability, but you refuse to disclose it.
    There’s nothing good that can come from disclosing a disability.

    Sir, could you please wear this "voluntary" star if david. Employers hiring employees are in a position of power. When they "ask" something they can claim it's voluntary. But it is impossible for this to be the case given the power difference. I know you'll pretend not to understand this just as anyone in HR will. Stop calling this "voluntary"

    But identifying on apps is inappropriate and honestly dishonest in a round about way and creates difficulty more than it helps.
    Kinda like the Dr's office same deal

    Was reading through a job and I thought this is fantastic great opportunity great company and location ( and having experience)
    Read through it then down at the bottom ( SPANISH PREFERRED) guess this white woman over 50 doesn't have a chance right from the get go lol positive spin girl I am at least they were honest up front and didn't waste any more of my time
    I don't believe everybody gets a blue ribbon lol what ever happened to being qualified for the job not quantified check the box employment OK

    And when you don't check the boxes it does create questions and avoidance at the employer side

      I do realize the need. it was just disappointing to not have the opportunity because I don't speak Spanish. I have been practicing but not fluent enough.

    Bryan, you seem like a lovely guy with a great heart. But you are mistaken on the disability question. People are not educated on disability or mental illnesses (I have loved ones with mental illnesses and they are lovely, intelligent capable people) and because they are uneducated and have no compassion, disability and especially mental illness freaks them out. I have dwarfism and hearing loss. I would not be surprised if I was not hired because it scared them.

    I refuse to play these games.
    It's a fallacy to expect the make up of the talent pool for a particular position to match the community at large. Individuals make their own choices, and at population levels (without getting into stereotypes) there are definite preferences amongst certain groups for certain types of positions. They'll therefore be over/underrepresented in the talent pool for that reason.
    That should not give any advantage/disadvantage with regard to hiring decisions.

    Any company that hires based on personal criteria (race, skin color, religious preference, political affiliation, ethnicity, physical handicap) is not a company worth working for. If the Government is just "fact checking" to ensure companies are NOT discriminating, let ALL applicants be anonymous for those criteria when they apply for the job.
    Making "forced fit" adjustments for the sake of "diversity" does NOT help anyone. For example, United Airlines - I don't want someone flying the plane I'm on who ends up 10th in their flight class of 10 people, but was admitted to the program as a result of "affirmative action".

    Protected class do expound? this sounds racist the gov should not be involved in who a company hires. Eliminating affirmative action policies would have devastating consequences on students from marginalized communities. well this should be based on financial hardship and educational test scores not skin color remember: you want to help the disadvantaged put all the weight on poverty not race. Equal opportunity based on financial need and ability only "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
