RIP Vinny. I grew up in Southern California and Vin calling Dodger games was my youth and adulthood. We was also a great play-by-play football announcer for CBS in the late 70's and early 80's. I'll miss you Vin.
When you hear this broadcast, the spare use of words Scully is famous for comes through very well indeed. This is probably his most famous radio call not working a baseball game.
And just like he did after Gibson hit the impossible home run to beat the Oakland A's in '88, he lets the moment happen, says nothing so that the viewer can focus on the excitement of the crowd
The part of the story that gets glossed over is that this play did NOT end the game. After this amazing play, the 49ers were in danger of losing as the Cowboys were moving back down the field very quickly with big chunks of yardage...only needing a field goal to win it. Even though I know the outcome, it still makes me nervous to watch... Niners...return to glory in 2018!

Every time we got in the playoff's Dallas Beat us. this day " The Catch" was unreal. The Stadium went crazy. And the 49ers went on in the 1980's becoming the team of the decade. If you compare Quarter Backs to Joe Montana, there is no equal. that includes Tom Brady. Joe was the best. what a special time back then. " Montana to Rice".

And I was there! In the end zone where The Catch was made. I can't express the feeling of elation that enveloped everyone in that stadium that day. It was the start of what became known as "the decade of dominance" to the 49er Faithful. Those were the days!
Amazing!!! Even by today's standards (perhaps even more so). Great avoidance of the defense's leap by Montana. And how happy everyone in the stadium is! Hugging and high-fiving and patting backs and cheering 'till there was no tomorrow. Great fans (and great fashion). And what a great team celebration by the 49ers. Truly a team, to the very letter.
coming from a life long cowboys fan, who watched them in the 70's, Montana was probably the greatest, because he was so cool under pressure in huge games like this. Staubach was a great leader and intense competitor when they were behind, Elway was a gutsy and athletic field general in the final moments, but Montana was so accurate, uncanny, and cool headed. Brady isn't too far behind him. Funny how nobody mentions the great Terry Bradshaw, though. His team's always put the close games out of reach, in the fourth quarter, not needing a comeback in the final moments
I wish I was old enough to appreciate the 80's niners (born in 85). I remember the 95 super bowl when they destroyed the charger's and I thought it was gonna be like that forever. Now look at them. thanks Jed.

As I watched pitch by pitch the games he called On Saturday afternoons, plus the 1986 and 1988 World Series. The only time I remember Keith Jackson calling baseball was when he was assigned to do the 1986 NLCS for ABC. I had no idea Mr. Jackson had been the primary announcer for ABC baseball coverage before Michaels.
They even had a jingle for the 49ers. The only part I remember was, "Thank God for the sod squad...". That was an El Nino year and Northern California got pummeled with rain. It is fun to sit and watch old football and baseball games from the Bay Area during the 70s and 80s.
The best thing about VIn Scully is he knew when to shut up. When something great happened he let the event speak for itself. He did it for Aaron's 715th, Gibson's HR and here as well.
My girlfriend and I were at that game. We staying at the Fairmont Hotel. So were the Cowboys. I recall one evening before the game, I went downstairs to the lobby. At that time, three massive men were walking in through the front. I recognized one of them, it wasvToo Tall Jones. Not only were they taller than me but wide as well.

This was Vin's last game as a network NFL announcer. Reportedly he wasn't happy that Pat Summerall was named CBS' lead NFL announcer and declined to sign a new contract. When he signed with NBC to be their lead baseball announcer the next year, he was offered to join NBC's NFL broadcast team (behind Dick Enberg), but declined.
Had Scully did chosen to call the NFL on NBC at the time at best he would have been # 2 play by play behind Enberg. Marv Albert replced Don Criqui in 1983 as # 2 play by play and paired with John Brodie. Although Albert did not do any college football bowl games which NBC had at the time, I don't think he would have called a bowl game ( likely the Orange Bowl) because NBC had the rights at the time to the Rose, Orange and the Fiesta Bowls. As part of the deal NBC allowed Criqui to retain his Orange Bowl credit. At CBS , Scully never did any of their Bowl games mainly the Sun or Peach Bowl ( Lindsey Nelson was always penciled in for the Cotton Bowl which CBS had at the time as NBC had the Rose which Enberg was the staple as # 1 took over as Curt Gowdy left NBC three years earlier). Both Summerall and Scully were great play by play announcers. I would have loved to have heard Scully call a Super Bowl. One thing I would have also loved to see was and I doubt at the time it would have happened was because Summerall was an ex player and after his playing days became an analyst but eventually moved to play by play if CBS in somewhat fairness would have had both Scully and Summerall call Super Bowl XVI with Scully doing play by play and Summerall the analyst and give Madden a huge role with Musburger on the NFL Today. That would have been great to see but Summerall at that time had earned his merits at CBS as did Scully who at that time had been edtablished as a legendary announcer.

(The NFC championshio was Scully's consolation prize.) Chastened, Scully ended his 30-year association with CBS in the offseason, taking NBC up on its offer to be its lead announcer on the baseball Game of the Week.
I can only say this is the most important sports play in San Francisco Bay Area history, and could be second to what might have happened if McCovey's line drive got past Bobby Richardson and Mays scored the winning run in Game 7 of the 1962 World Series.

The great Johnny Unitas put the "C" in "Cool." Staubach, Montana and Brady would put it in the deep freezer.
