- this is a song i wrote at 3am while researching aphantasia :))
i slapped it onto a poor quality drawing and called it a day- i didnt like it enough to put it in my EP so i just put it here. i hope you like the jammie jam !!
DISCLAIMER: this song isnt about actual aphantasia its used as a metaphor. though i do suffer from a certain form of aphantasia this song is mostly supposed to be aimed at mental health :))

My aphantasia is the very reason I built the worlds I did, I couldn't see things like how others can, so I put it into words, so I could.. feel it, I suppose. For lack of a better term, hah.
It's why I have to put so many details into things, exact heights so I can compare properly, comparisons to trees and doors and cans and everything so I can reference it and make sure it's the right size when I draw it, and of course drawing it so it doesn't get lost because I know it's *in there* and am scared to lose it because it's just an idea. A concept. It doesn't have form. I can't give it form until it's on the page, and I have to keep drawing and redrawing and so many of my poses are bland from my head because I can't just. Picture new ones.
And I'm constantly mimicking the pose because I can't see it in my head, so I have to keep posing that way to *feel* it, even if I already took a picture of it to help reference it, which I do a lot to try and get the pose.
I guess it's like.. Putting your hand in a box blind?
You have to trust there's no razor blades or bees or rats or spiders or gore in there, and fumble, and you're not allowed to pull anything out. You grab something, it feels interesting, but you can't place what it is, you just. Feel it. Know it's there. It's weird.
I remember people having imaginary friends and me, wanting to fit in but not seeing anything like they could picture, I just. Spoke to the air. Acted like someone was there. It was.. weird. But all the cartoons showed it so it had to be a thing, and some kids at school had them, so maybe I wasn't doing it right.
My aphantasia was one of many reasons I thought I was broken all my life.
I also just. Never felt male or female. Didn't connect. I mean I liked masculine aspects, being strong enough to protect who I love and dependable and all, as I saw it as a kid, and I liked feminine things like dressing up (in any gender outfits) and being soft enough to comfort people when they were crying
I just wanted to make people feel safe overall, hah.
But that lead to gender dysmorphia as I got a chest, and I kept being told I'd get used to it, that it was a normal thing.
I never did. I have a chest binder now, and I identify as Agender, hah.
I also had a pretty horrid father, so that didn't help. Constantly told me how worthless I was, physical and mental abuse, not worth getting too deep into it, but. Sure added to that broken feeling.
That, along with a handful of other things, felt like everything wanted me to know I was different, and that was bad. I was broken.
It's taken a lot to put the pieces back together, but I'm using gold colored glue, to honor my scars, and show how far I've come. It's one of my favorite ways to view a mistake. It's progress. It's something you survived, as hard as it was.
And now I can try to be there for people who might have gone through similar things, and be that safety for someone that needs it, so there's less people who had no one like me.
So thank you for doing the same. Songs like this show people they aren't alone, and I'm sure hearing people relate helps you not feel as alone either.
Things like this help people know they're not *broken.*

First of all you are so strong it’s inspiring. I know I don’t know you personally but being able to come out of all that and still think about helping the people around you is truly amazing. I can tell you are a great person and I hate that great people are the ones who usually have gone through so much sucky stuff. But I guess the gold colored glue we use to patch up our scars is what causes us to shine in the first place. I hope that you’re in a better place and find peace because everyone deserves it.
