Doing a Gdansk walking tour in one of the nicest Polish city centers. While riding around we get pulled over by what looks like the police but it's actually the infamous Straż Miejska. Sometimes they get you, can't win them all. Lighter on cash we end up eating at the Polish 'milk bar', bar mleczny, which servers typical affordable Polish food.

So I thought we were being stopped by the police and so you accept that you got got. Later I find out it's the infamous Straż Miejska or as I understand parking police with a bit more authority and it's a typical thing that happens to tourists. What do Polish viewers think of them? Would you have stopped or try to go past them?

Greets from Warsaw. Riding a scooter with a passenger is indeed illegal. And to be honest there were a lot of accidents involving two persons riding a single scooter, so I would say the law is justified. Straż Miejska is indeed like parking police with more authority: they handle minor domestic order violations (morons yelling their lungs off at 2 A.M., dudes drinking from an open container in a public [illegal in Poland]). They are irritating on some occasions ;) but they offload the regular police as an auxiliary force.

The architecture of Gdańsk is influenced by the Hanseatic, not the German architecture. The Hanseatic League was the prototype of the European Union. It was the medieval European Union. That is why Amsterdam, Lübeck, Gdańsk and many other cities are so similar to each other. This organization included several dozen cities on the shores of the seas.

it's really dangerous to be on a e-scooter with 2 people. firstly without a helmet , secondly it is not made to withstand a high amount of weight , most people beyond 90 kg cant even use them, i mean they could but they will definitely damage them. ( there are some that can handle 120kg or 150kg at the most but they are never rentals like you see on the street ) you could have gotten both of you guys pretty injured depending on how you fall and if you would be pushed into incoming traffic you could even lose your life in quite the lame way so honestly i do not blame the police in this case.
meanwhile in the netherlands we can't even drive them to begin with. not legally at least. ( doesn't stop me from owning one and riding it )

It is quite dangerous riding on cobble street. It is reason why is illegal to ride on pedestrian sidlwak. As person who witnessed horrible accident involving pair riding on the scooter you should feel blessed.
Small fine to pay is great warning.

Straż Miejska is not parking police. It is municipal police (run by the city, not the government). They are responsible for preserving order on the streets. They can give you a ticket, stop you (also when you commit a crime but then they have to call the national police), they are authorised to use force (except guns) or check you in database.

In Poznan, there is an old German building built as a bank, now a university, with the exact same architecture. Poland is very safe. Btw, those scooters cause more accidents than bikes or cars. That is why the control the scooters.

Strogonow it's not typical polish food. It came from Russia and it holds its name after Stroganov family en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroganov_family It is quite difficult to precisely point out typical polish food since our cuisine have many influences from various directions - central europe - but I would recommend soups like grochówka, fasolowa, żurek (occasionally served in bread) and if you find them in 'Bar mleczny' most probably you will get decent quality for very affordable price. Enjoy.

I don't know if you know, but Gdańsk was the most Dutch city in the Polish Crown in the 15th-17th centuries. It was actually built by Dutch merchant companies and during the Hanseatic League, Dutch was heard more often than Polish. The Dutch called the city Danswijk. The most important monuments of Gdańsk and the architecture of the old town are typical Dutch Mannerism - it is the work of the Dutch - Abraham Van der Blocke, Anton van Obberghen and Cornelius van der Bosch. Also as a result of religious persecution near Gdańsk - at the mouth of the Vistula river, they settled at the invitation of the Polish King, the so-called "Olędrzy" (Hollanders). They were Mennonites fleeing Friesland and the Netherlands from the persecution of Catholics. Descendants of Dutch settlers lived here until 1945 when they were expelled by the Russians, who recognized them as Germans.

  • @panglossianaeolist3704
    @panglossianaeolist3704 2 года назад +17

    The architecture is Dutch.
Gdansk was the Export Hub of Polish grain and timber.
Dutch Merchants settled in the port town. They preferred to live as close as possible to their ships.
They also wanted their home comforts. So, Dutch Architects came in Dutch Ships from the Netherlands.
From 1560 to 1675 the houses were built narrow and tall with the distinctive 'Amsterdam' style fronts.
Narrow to evade tax in Holland. But, in Poland, this is what the Dutch knew.
    -
After WW ii - the deep hatred of everything german convinced the Polish State to build a new, modern, city.
It was pointed out that the town was designed by Dutch architects for the merchants of the Dutch Empire and so was worth rebuilding in the Dutch Style.

What did u expect? In Polish traffic law it says you are not alowed to ride scooters with a passenger.

I am pretty sure, that the fine, was much lower than, 3000 Polish dollars(zloty). Polish cops are completely different than the cops in North America. One time I was visiting Poland, and when I was walking back home, they stopped me, and asked me about mine id. After talking to them for a couple of minutes, I asked them if they can drive me. On the way home I told them, to stop at the gas station, so I can buy few beers, and I said, that I will buy a bottle of vodka for them, and they did. After that, they drove me home. Imagine this, happening in North America.

@Julia Poland your username gives away you're from PL 😋 if you ride a step normally without going crazy, and you pay attention I don't think it's dangerous. As with everything... but if you drive like a maniac yeah I guess it would be dangerous, and rules are necessary.
And yeah in NL and Belgium most of the police are chill. Good to hear you had good experiences with them.
Only the undercover cops chasing motorcyclists (and cars) can be a pain in the @$$, that happened to me a while ago, undercover cop was behind me for 15 minutes, waiting to see when I would give him a good reason to stop me. And I don't like people behind me all the time so I accelerated a bit too much. Anyway, lesson learned.
