  • In this video I show you how to diagnose a check engine alarm / horn on my 1999 Johnson 200 HP outboard motor. This alarm corresponds to a fuel restriction in your fuel lines. A fuel restriction can cause a lean condition and potentially melt pistons causes severe engine damagePotential causes for this check engine light:1. Clogged Fuel Filter2. Kinked Fuel Hose3. Failed or Bad Anti-siphon valve4. Broken fuel pick up tube5. Bad hand primer bulb (i.e. its allowing air to get in the line)6. Air in the fuel lines (a pin hole somewhere)7. Bad vacuum switch sensor8. Bad SystemCheck gauge clusterwebsite: www.thisoldoutboard.comeBay Store: www.ebay.com/usr/thisoldoutboard

Thanks for the absolute thorough detailed well-rounded video!! One of the best ever because you took time to realistically take us with you on this journey to discover the element of your problem....same as many of us would. Outstanding!!! Thank you again😅 for your time, patience, and perseverance!

If you put some grease into the socket it helps to glue the bolt or nut into the socket , lessening the chance for losing it into the abyss

Hello I have a 1997 Johnson 175 HP. When cold starting the fuel bulb doesn't have to be pumped up at all and only need to push in the choke about 2 to 3 seconds starts right up. If your bulb is losing prime or going flat you have a fuel leak somewhere, probably float bowls or needle valve. carbs are easy to rebuild. that will make a big difference in starting.

Im only 7 minutes in the video , but 80 percent of the time , the symptons you describe are water in my fuel tank , i gotta a honda 225 for my offshore boat , it don't like even a snot of water in the tank , it always finds the fuel hose that big bump you mentioned , puts it into safe mode , at worse case , stumbles for a second , best case scenerio . And ill drain that fuel inspect it to confirm , and siphon the gas off the bottom for my beater pick up to burn , leave the water in the jug as much as possible .collapsed fuel line got me one time too , changed the whole motor on my flats boat , and it was the fuel lines , and primer bulb , which felt normal ..lines were collapsing inside of them , both my boats did that at the same time , last year , both 1996 boats ..only use marine fuel lines and double clamp them ..

Having the same exact problem with my 2002 Johnson 150. I have done everything you did except the fuel pickup in the tank. So tonight I will attmept to replace this sensor. Just arrived in the mail. Hope it fixes the issue for me.

@@timscales5191 I am embarrased to admit I still haven't been out yet. So busy. Hopefully soon, I will update.. Also it was easier to replace on the 150 as vro pump is right under the front airbox.

A boat mechanic told me that my problem was the fuel pump so I ordered it not the fuel pressure sensor I'm going to try the fuel pump

Agree that could be it. I’ve since sold the boat but Ive also since learned that the symptoms could also be revealing the VRO fuel pump slowly giving out. In that case, I would delete the VRO and go to premix in the tank.

The vro runs on vacuum from the engine if your line is loose or cracked might very well have caused your problem

try running a remote tank and if you don'.t an alarm, you know motor is good and its fuel delivery.

I got a 1997 Johnson 200 and I'm getting a similar issue. I replaced the water pump and the thermostat but I'm still getting a constant engine alarm. It only happens when I'm getting to medium-high RPMs and it only happens when the engine is warm. I'll need to shut the engine off for a few seconds and when I crank it up again it seems to be fine for a few minutes. Idk what to do.

What’s the part number for the sensor?

Hello, I came across this video I found very interest because I'm just started having the very same problems. I have a 1990 Johnson 200.
Alarm sounding at a high RPM starting over bouncing waves and now continuously at lesser R's and seeming to be bogging down on my last way in.
I'll be attempting this sensor replacement and just wanted to know the part # to check and see if it matches my motor.
And if there was anything else that came up or you think I need a heads up on for this.
Thank you for this enlightening and helpful video.

The thing I don't understand is : Why did the alarm not go off when you had it hooked up the test tank ? If the sensor was bad, it should have still gone off with the test tank.
