  • In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks” , I take a 6 mile circular walk (with a detour) starting & finishing at Janesmoor Pond (near Fritham). Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Forestry Commission car park at Janesmoor Pond and head South to the entrance to the Longbeech Camp site at which point I follow a cycle track Eastwards between the Long Beech Enclosure (to the South) & the King's Garn Gutter Enclosure (to the North).
I continue Eastwards, crossing Colmeer Gutter (a free flowing stream) and on to the Sir Walter Tyrrell pub. There I head South and explore the Rufus Stone - the alleged spot where King William II (King Rufus) was fatally wounded with an arrow during a hunting accident (or was it murder?) on 2nd August 1100.
At this point, walkers have the option of doing a shorter 4.5 mile route (details in the video) however I continue initially Eastwards through woods and then South around Malwood Farm before going through the underpass under the A31 to my next destination - the iron age hillfort at Malwood Castle.
There is not too much to see of the fort as the inner circle is in private grounds but the outer bank can easily be made out from the road.
I then head back to the Rufus Stone and join another cycle track that takes me Westwards. Along the way I see if I can find Stanlidge Pond at the edge of Stricknage Wood and also get to enjoy some stunning views to the North.
When I get to the minor road that goes to Fritham, I head North back to the car park at Janesmoor pond before heading off to the Royal Oak pub at Fritham for some light refreshments.

Lovely walk Dave, I particularly liked Logan's "Mighty Leap", no wonder he was ready for a snooze.

I did a fair amount of orienteering in that part of The New Forest during my youth in the 1970s. That was before that noisy motorway was constructed. I liked Logan’s leap across that boggy bit.

@@DaveFord that makes two of us, although at 65 I have a tendency to flop down for a snooze too at the end of a walk.

Yep, I don't think that I have ever had the joy of owning a set of boots that were 100% waterproof! :)

I found out in my careers there is no such thing as 100% waterproof, you get taught to get comfortable been un-comfofortable!!

Lovely video as always Dave. That may have been a little ford you crossed at the start, but you are a bigger Ford! And don't worry, I have heard every pun under the sun to do with my surname too! Mine has something to do with those fabulous religious buildings that you always visit! Have you been watching the excellent 10th series of 'Digging For Britain' with Prof Alice Roberts currently showing on BBC 2 and all on the I-Player? There are plenty of forts and other mounds too, some dating back beyond the time Stonehenge was built. Quite a bit of all the series was filmed down here in the South West, and you've probably walked among many of the places featured! Cheers!
