Can I get it up? Project Mast, making my boat sail again.

  • Back again, it takes so much to make videos… anyway in this video I attempt to get the mast built and back up. As always I struggle…
So bit of TIG welding, fabrication, bodging mixed with dodgy clothes, safety and hopefully no swearing (I believe I edited it all out).
Disclaimer - this is a story about how you should not build, rebuild, design and fabricate a boat. It may work, but is a cautionary tail of why it is far easier to hire a boat or just book a place on a small cruise ship.

I watched all your videos about this boat with great surprise and admiration, I always wondered if there would be an steel trimaran because I wanted my future trimaran to be steel (maybe with a little bit thicker steel) 😄. Thank you very much for embarking on such an adventure and sharing this very successful project with us. At the same time, I want to say that I am very sad that this is the last video of this boat. I hope you haven't abandoned this beautiful ship and I hope we can watch her on the water again when she is fully prepared.

Thanks very much for the kind words. As it happens, I put her in the water yesterday and plan to pop out to sea next week. The refurbed mast is working well. Steel is heavy for multi hulls, however it gives huge peace of mind and is not as heavy as many think.
Currently I only get her in the water once a year during August and I did mean to do some more videos, but I struggle to find time.

I hope this is okay, I always feel strange uploading. It’s like that Beatles song about making stuff that people will never hear mixed with worrying that I may come across as a plonker… oh well, here it is warts and all (note: I do not have warts).

Thanks very much. I am meaning to upload an update, as mast is all good and she is running well. Took her to sea last week and hopefully going again this week if weather gives me a chance.

Thanks so much for sharing your story
I've been watching your videos back to back
I also think outside the square
I worked in a ship yard building aluminium catamarans and we used metholayted spirits as the cutting fluid for drilling and tapping threads
    Love your work

Thanks very much. Good point with the methylated spirits, I will try that. Aluminium cats? That sounds cool. If ever build again, it would be aluminium.

Forgot to say the stupid t shirt on my head was because I had a hideous bout of sun rash on my neck. It was really painful.

I'm also not a fan of heights, as a kid/teen it didn't bother me, but now I get nervous just watching people on high things.

Don’t watch ‘Fall’ on Netflix… most stressful film I have ever watched, I ended up pacing up and down and could not sleep for hours.
