These are the videos I love. Just making something, with or without narrative.
Those are what come out almost every Saturday.
I have a couple of No 46 planes and blades. I’m sure you can make them from 1/8” tool steel with a bench grinder or even an angle grinder, a torch and a jar of oil.
I bought a new set of 46 plane irons from St. James Bay. Nice work. I love your case. I have been wanting to make a couple for my 45 and 55 irons.
I just found out that the 46 even existed. Nice project James, looks awesome!
I just used the CA glue trick not more than an hour ago. I just did a mitered half lap joint (say that three times fast). I didn't want to risk the miter sliding during glue up at some point. as the liquid hide glue has a much longer time as compared to PVA. As such, a dab of CA glue and activator to keep all firmly in place while the liquid hide glue dries. Was super fun joint to cut and will be super strong.
That looks so good with the carving
Great project. I’m going to steal some of your ideas particularly the epoxy + superglue. I have a concept for a box to store my plow plane with that type of blade storage around the inside perimeter. Everything in one place and protected from condensation in my cold garage shop. Keep’em coming!
Oh yeah, the perfect video for me. My 45 came with about 100 irons (2 of everything I think) Cleaning and sharpening is a bit arduous but making storage boxes (and organizing) will be fun 🤙
I got a few various sized cutters for my Veritas plow plane including a few sizes of tongue n groove blades and ever since you convinced me to get my files stored separately instead of a drawer looks like I'm gonna have to make a plow plane cutter box... tks a lot 😆
Thanks for sharing your time and wisdom with us.
- How do you hold the top & bottom together?
- For my 45 & 55 I made tool roll style holders for the irons.
- I got an extra set of irons for my 46 from St.James Bay in AZ.
The irons keep them from sliding around. That is how the originals do it.
It IS a pretty box. You're right about the torrefied maple with BLO. Thanks for sharing.
lovely job!
Would like to see a 46 video
Love the way this came out really pretty box for the shop.
Very timely! I need to make a case for my 45 cutters.
Looks like maple flavored smores. Great work James.
Beautiful work, James! Amazing looking little holder! 😃
Congrats on the new tool!
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Beautiful piece of work! The figured wood is gorgeous! Can’t wait to see them in use!
Thanks for this video! I need to make a case for my plow plane irons--this is well timed.
Beautiful work as always James. Happy New Year!
Great Project James, Happy New Year to you and all your family.
As has been mentioned above, St James Tool manufactures new #46 cutters and often has them listed on eBay
Nice box. Very well done. Outstanding wood. Very good finish. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2024 and stay safe.🙂🙂
James, have you thought about making the irons? You could buy some annealed O1 in the thickness you want, cut them out with a hacksaw or whatever, and then harden/temper them. I've always wondered why people didn't do that more often with some of the more obscure irons. Unless what you're after is the actual, historical iron, I think it'd work really well.
I have thought about it and if I ever needed one I might but it would be a LOT of work as they need a bevel on all 4 sides.
Perfect! My dog just chewed up my 55 irons box. Luckily it wasn’t anything original, and I’ve needed a new box anyway.
Thanks for sharing that, and the make, it was fun to watch!
I just inherited a 45 that was in hard shape. I cleaned it up and restored it and it now works brilliantly, but I've only got a 5/16" blade, and this thing is supposed to do much more. So where are the blades?
Sweet little project, James!
I have some irons that could do with a case.
So I'll keep this in mind.
Quick question though: don't the irons slide down into the box like this?
It would be annoying if you have to keep tipping them all onto your table top, just to get to the one that has slid down. 🤔
I was sort of expecting separate slots for each iron.
My box hold them so they don't slide around. But usually they are made so that the full set you have fills up the box so they can't slide around.
I'll have to try that if I can find blades for my 46.
Thank you for sharing.
James, would you consider doing a video on doing inlays by hand? I imagine straight line inlays would be done similar to a mortise and tenon.
How would you do curved inlays with hand tools?
I've done a few videos on that. With curved ones you just use carving gouge tools and do it the same way.

Thank you.
And Thank You for all your content. You, Rex and Paul are the three Wood Workers helping me learn the craft.
Gorgeous!
One project I need to do for my full set of 46 blades
No-one ever seems to mention the #50 in the list of plough/combination planes. (Which is what I have).
I have the original iron box but it’s soaked extensively in motor oil from spending ~50 years in the Ute of the old tradie I bought it from. I hadn’t thought of recreating the wooden box myself.
I have a few videos of the 50. Stanley did not sell as many of them as the 45.
Happy New Year!
Is the box lid held in place by the irons?I didn't see a rebate or magnets.
I enjoyed your video as always. Thank you for sharing. God bless, and happy new year!
. Nothing holds the lid other then the irons. Just like the originals.
cool. Did you think about adding something like a hinge or a post on the ends to keep the top aligned with the bottom?
I'd have made it the same height as the others so they'd match. Personal taste! But it sure looks good! Might consider painting in the grooves of the lettering.
thanks
Nice project. What holds the cover in place? Is it the cutters themselves, or did i miss something?
Just the irons. It actually does a pretty good job of it.
Interested to see you using a miter saw. I have a Disston made for Stanley that I picked up for a song that I used as a sash saw or a deep tenon saw. The only problem is that is a beast. Considering shortening is to save weight as I don’t use the whole length. What do you think? Good or bad idea?
I know a few people that have done that to get a big tenant saw.
Very nice work! Did you use 1/8" stock for it? I was having a hard time estimating. :)
The stock was whatever they had on hand. I just laid it beside the iron and found something that was slightly thicker than the iron. The outside pieces are a little thicker than that. Probably somewhere around 3/16
James what version of total boat epoxy do you use in your work for just as an adhesive?
High performance.
46 degrees of separation?
Very nice! Have you considered speaking to a blacksmith or metalworker, and have them make you some blades? Just a thought... 🙂
Yes. You can relatively easily make them but they are time consuming as you have to file all four edges with a bevel.
If you bought Sarah 46 Irons for X-mas, I think you'd be dead by New Years. She'd also have plenty of weights to weigh your body down.
I hope you had a good X-Mas and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.
How are you going to add more dividers to the inside of the box, since you don't know what size the still to be purchased irons will be?
There are no dividers. They all just sit next to each other.
Nice
Hmm. If the Irons are so rare and expensive, Maybe it was a good idea to reproduce them. I think it could be done by hand with grinding and filing or for example with Waterjet.
Yep. You can make them yourself. They are a bit more time consuming than most as they have to be angled on all four sides. But it can be done
Lets see that bad boy do some work 😁😁😁
What graphic editing program was that?
I use Premier Pro
How about a box for the planes themselves?
You're making him for the 45 and the 55 a while ago. I don't use them for myself as they hang up on the wall but I had a friend who wanted them.
You are correct, how the seven years has flown by. I guess I need to get going on that@@WoodByWrightHowTo
James and viewers i know you said finding 46 cutters is hard but...I was gifted a 40 but it is missing parts and only had one 1/2 cutter. Is there anyone in the US making new cutters? I have very little time so making my own is not exactly desirable...
You can find the parts quite easily it's just the relatively expensive. Check out www.handtoolfinder.com
Nice!
What ever happened to your infill plane build?
It's coming. Just got to have time to work on it. It is a rather extensive project
I think you should make a “get these tools first” video but only highlight tools that you should not get first. Part of this idea would be to offer no explanation that you are joking and see if the comments go way up.
I don’t know about the other people but I write “comment down below” because YOU asked us to!

I suppose I need to leap into the 20th century and get a (shudder) commuter and printer that actually works.
Nice job, beautiful box. Question for you can you give me Rosewood tools web address??,,Happy New Year!!! Thanks
Are you talking about red rose tool reproductions ? redrosereproductions.com/tools/
Yes, thanks. Want to buy a sector marking gauge. Want to use a ruler and measuring tape to a bear minimum.

Now you have to resell those old nasty original boxes and make new ones for the rest of your irons.
