Why is it that in most professional sports the referees are in great physical shape, yet the mlb has a bunch of 100 yr old, beer bellied geezers milling around the field
wyatt howell Because in games like soccer and basketball (maybe football too) referees have to run around and stay with the ball/play, a lot. For example, in basketball, the refs have to run back and forth through the court every minute or so. That doesn’t have to happen in baseball because there is so little space to cover and 4 umpires. (6 in postseason) the umpires have no need to be in shape because of this.
Also there is a shortage of umpires because of how hard it is

So this is probably why Rizzo asked the ump to move bout a month ago, when he tapped the top of his head, the ump shifted to the left side of the diamond
I take it Rizzo was at bat? That happens frequently, if the batter feels the the 2U is interfering with his view of the pitcher. The batter needs to clearly see the ball leave the pitcher's hand and the ump can interfere with that. But, yeah, it is also possible Rizzo thought he was going to hit the ball in the direction of the ump.

Umpire here, obviously not on this level, but sometimes, in the B or C slot, we can't get out of the way in time and we hate it just as much as everyone else does.
I'm just confused why the ump in the final clip was basically *on* the baseline.
@@alarson1799 He was on the fringe of the grass where he was supposed to be. The throw to second base was offline is why he was hit.

Big thing I notice is these umps in the field of play are always planted with both feet flat. When the play starts they should be prepared to move and get up on their toes. That, and some need to lose 100 lbs and some of them appear to be 70 yo.

2:20 isn't umpire interference, as the fielder had a chance to make a play. After the ball passes the infielders, the umpire is considered part of the field of play. Just thought I'd point it out.
Should of added the one where Bob Davidson got in the way of the phillies catcher. Him and charlie got into it after wards. One of the more notable umpire controversies in recent memory.

Can someone explain why they didn't return the runners in that last one? The umpire was clearly in the way of the throw trajectory.
in this scenario with a thrown ball he is part of the field. Also, I don't think he was "clearly" in the way as when he's hit with the ball his toes look to be on the infield grass, which would give the thrower plenty of space to throw the ball over 2B. The throw was awful.
Though he was in the line of the throw, I think where the ump was and the throw went would have never even came close to getting the out at second. Like the guy above/below said the ump was in the grass there. The base Line is above the grass for sure. So

Notice how no blind bats got called for interference but the second a player commits interference they can not make the call fast enough.

The only way an umpire can interfere with a thrown ball is if it's home plate interfering with the catcher. If it's a batted ball that passes at least one fielder it's also not umpire interference. So only the first 3 are umpire's interference the others are just umpire in the wrong place at wrong time.

Those last two weren't technically umpire interference but the rest were. The umpire can only interfere with a batted ball before a fielder has a play or on a throw by the back catcher. The rest of the time the umpire is considered part of the field.

Today 6/4/23, an umpire knocked Jake Cronenworth down in the basepath and then called him out. Jake may have been out anyway but it would have been a close play if not for the umpire interfering. They should have called him safe.
They couldn't call him safe... A runner running into an umpire is not umpire interference, it's nothing. It's very rare, but when it happens nothing can be done about it. A runner's best bet is to return to the nearest base; if he's thrown out after a collision with an umpire the out will stand.

There are only two kinds of umpire interference: batted ball hits an umpire before passing an infielder other than the pitcher, and umpire interferes with catcher throwing out a runner. Anything else is nothing, the umpire is effectively part of the field.

Do intentional walks backfiring (intentionally walking someone and then the next guy gets a hr, rbi, etc)
Sometimes its not there fault
On the last one, they should have made the runners go back to second and third. That would be consistent with the other ones.

Is umpire interference on a batted ball the same as a runner? It seems in these clips balls off the bat were waved dead while, like in the last clip, the runners were allowed to advance after the throw hit him. Anyone know the rule?
