This is a promo based on a prior episode where Mario Savoldi showed Backlund a promo by The Iron Sheik where Sheik said he paid off Arnold Skaaland to throw in the towel the night he beat Backlund
Don't let the goody goody persona fool u. Bob Backlund was a stong SOB and in a shoot would fuck up 90% of pro wrestlers. He was a tough and trained killer amateur mat wrestler.
Not precisely a mic's god, but that guy was a hell of a wrestler back in the time! To me, one of the best ever so far. His legendary matches against Flair and Race are a proof of that
Despite the howdy doody comments etc. Bob Backlund WAS a strong SOB and a VERY good mat wrestler. Trully trained thru college. So in a shoot, this guy could kick most guys asses straight. He sold well for the heels and did his run proud. I was not a fan of his personally. He was lousy on the mic but a 5 1/2 year WWF championship run is nothing to sneeze at. The Garden still sold out.
95% of Bob Backlund's babyface promos from the 70s and 80s were boring and awful. This, on the other hand, was INTENSE. "something bigger than God" Why wasn't he like this all the time? That was fantastic.
I got to know Bob Backlund personally in working for The Phila. Spectrum and we became friends and a better person you will find thasn Bob. And I never had to call him Mr.Backlund.
Damn that was an intense promo. I wonder what would have happened if he had done with Vince said and turned heel to drop the title to Hogan. If he had come along 10 years later, never would have been pushed as the happy go lucky babyface to begin with. In retrospect, playing a heel was his true calling, despite the majority of his career.
This is actually one of the best promos I have ever seen Bob Backlund do.
Watch his stuff from 94
This was a great promo! Backlund was absolutely spellbinding, and he came across as someone just on the edge of snapping.
Bob kept this all bottled up inside until that fateful day in 1994 when he wrestled Bret on Superstars 😁

Yes sir your right
And that includes that crybaby Superstar Billy Graham!
first promo of “Mr. Backlund”
He felt like God!
Go, Bob, go!
"look in the trunk of your car" ... you know what? If Bob Backlund popped out of the trunk of my car I would poop my pants!
You did the same thing when your mother caught yourself fondling your pee pee at 45

He was believable when he spoke, though. That's the most important part to the mic.
You have a wonderful imagination.
This dude is amazing speaking and pushing a story of conflict further

So fuckin true!
He was great on the mic in 1994.

Ok, I just woke up. What did he say?
This is the baby face version of Mr Bob Backlund
Backlund was much better as a heal than the Howdy Doody face shtick.
I feel like that...mad on the inside, happy on the outside.

@t01880 A preview of things to come I guess.
McMahon screwed Bob over. Brett Hart claims McMahon screwed him over but Bob hot screwed 5 times more than Brett.
howdy doody rules
They should have gave backlund 5 more years as a heel champion and used Hogan as doink the clown.
???????????????DUNCE
🤡
@tidq they werent boring an awful. They were real. they brought of a sense of realism to the business.
