You covered their growth and propagation most excellently. Thanks, so much. I've been trying to get mine to go to seed for years. One of them finally flowered this year. Now, I know why the others haven't flowered yet.
This episode is "right on time", since I have started a larger colony of various Cannas this year. I am looking forward to over wintering & saving my rhizomes for next year's season. So far, I am getting great foliage. However, only one pot of my Cleopatra Cannas is in bloom as it was always the tallest baby to begin with. I believe that all of the others will catch up. Although I love them all, the Cleopatra's are my absolute favorites. I made a point of choosing varieties of colors and sizes. All of them were planted in about 12 urn style, matching, planters. Many of my neighbors and strangers have been "sharing" into my gate. I told "God" that He really out did Himself this year. I will remember to make sure the Cannas have enough water. I appreciate your tutorial assistance.
Hey Bertha, always happy to hear from you. Enjoy your Cannas, I can imagine how beautiful they look. I love it, that neighbours and strangers are intrigued and staring into you gate. Enjoy the summer!
Hi, thnk you so much for following my channel. When overwintering Canna, once the rhizomes are dry place them in a carton with crunched newspapers and cover them with either newpapers, peat moss or vermiculite. The whole point is your want to keep them dry and insulated. Once done store in a dry environment such as basement, garage or even a cupboard. I have a cana I live in washington in the u s a. For some reason this summer I only got two flowers and that was it. I see to where 2 flowers tried to open but didn't.
Hi thank you for sharing and apologies for late response as I am out of country. Sometimes it could be the result of under watering. Cannas require alot of water especially during the heat wave. It also requires full sun. Also check to see if the rhizomes are congested and need division. Keep me posted and we can together find a solution.
Hello, I recently got consistently committed to my garden. Do some rhizomes / tubers have different colors, like darker than others by that color of the flowers? Because my yellow is different than my red flowers. Also is it necessary to dig them up if I'm not dividing them up for winter? My planting zone is 7b/8a? Can I have them for the winter in the ground?😮
Hi Rhizomes are undergound stems that have nodes and that send out roots from the bottom nodes and shoots from the top nodes. They are so many different rhizomes such as the Canna Lily and Iris rhizomes differs from a rhizomatous Begonias. So plant will handle winter in the ground but other may not with stand cold temperatures. Kindly let me know which plants you have in your garden and what temperatures do you expect to have during winter.
@redsoilgardener Thank you for the information, I'm in Southern Maryland. Zone 7b/8a. We do have all 4 seasons. Gardeners told me I should be fine, here with covering with hay or mulch. My question was, does canna lillies rhizomes have different colors for color of flower to plants?
Canna grow through rhizomes under the soil. This is like extended stems under the soil so they do fill up a space. However, the trick is to control them. Digging up the roots when it gets overcrowded. However, as they do not spread through self seeding, I would not be too worried.
As Neem is an organic pesticide you would have to apply it every two weeks until you eliminate the rust. Therefore it is good for plants that are not in a critical fungi infestation. Many fungi infestations is caused by too much foliage hence no air circulation, watering the foliage instead of the soil, Plants being group too close together. These spores like the humidity and they initially hide on the underside of the leaves until it gets critical. Check out my episode on "Canna Rust" it explains everything. Thank you for sharing and for following my channel.
You can fertize them during the growing period, in spring as they start getting their new shoots and also in summer when they bloom. Get a fertiliser that is high on Phosphorus to encourage blooming and rhizome development. an NPK 5:10:5
When you get brown edging and tips could a result of under watering or overwatering. Cannas are thirsty plants and you are experiencing a hot summer make sure you water the soil around the Canna roots. Overwatering could result in mushy roots, but I don't think it's that as your plants seems happy and flowering. Just in case, check the underside of the leaves, just incase it's pests. They love hiding. if there is nothing then we can eliminate that.

Are Canna Lilies considered invasive plants in Kenya? They appear to be growing everywhere. Thanks

Does Neem Oil spray prevent the rust on Canna Lilies?

Do canna lilies need to be fertilized

Why my canna produce brown tips and edges but they are glowering
When you get brown edging and tips could a result of under watering or overwatering. Cannas are thirsty plants and you are experiencing a hot summer make sure you water the soil around the Canna roots.
