I was there that evening. It was a lengendary pinkpop day with the massive thunderstorm before Metallica. Gives ride the lightning a special meaning. Nothing else matters gave shivers down miy spine. Love metalllica keep up the good work !
The sky was literal black. It looked like the apocalypse was about to start😅
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was legendary, the thunderstorm that blew away half of the stage. Black skies, everyone soaking wet, a true apocalypse! Couldn't be better

Everyone should stop critizicing, they're old we all know, but that's not stopping them from playing for the fans.
Believe it or not, james sounds really good here compared to other shows in the last decade.

I was there, crouching like they told me to evade the thunderstorm . I remember because I had to piss real bad, but all the stalls were taken as nobody wanted to get wet. So I took a leak against a fence surrounding the area. When I went back I felt my bladder could take another couple of beers so I went and order a whole tray. Just when I got back to my friends Metallica was given green light to play. Best moment evahhh!!!

i was there, it sounds a lot worse on youtube than on pinkpop. Metallica is a band who still can play the same like it was new.

Ik denk, dat als jij daarop stond, dat ik niet moeilijk deed en gelijk zou vertrekken, maar dat is mening na mening!
Geef Metallica niet de schuld dat ze nogsteeds geweldig zijn, Het geld hebben ze al binnen, maar ik vind het nog super geweldig dat ik Part van van hun *Metallica Family* En dan met miljoenen andere mensen.

It was partially cause of the bad mixing of his bass drum but most of it was his sloppiness

Nu ik het terug zie beleef ik het weer echt geweldig
Ik snap best dat mensen hier als een gek lopen te zeiken dat de band niet meer is zoals het was. Die zullen ze waarschijnlijk ook vaker gezien hebben dan 1x. Dit was mijn eerste keer en heb echt genoten. Op dat moment was het super natuurlijk voor mij! Maar dat zal voor iedereen wel spreken die hier wat te zeggen heeft (no offense) aangezien je ze toch weer ziet!
Daarnaast de audio in deze video is gewoon bagger. Als je de live bootleg luistert die Metallica zelf heeft uitgebracht klinkt het al een stuk beter! Oke, de fouten die blijven erin zitten natuurlijk maar geluid komt stuk beter uit de verf.
Dan wat ik als laatste wil zeggen is voor degene die het de eerste keer was zoals mij: het was super vet concert en ben blij dat Avenged Sevenfold het voorprogramma was en erna Metallica! 2 van mijn favoriete bands op 1 dag! Geweldig!

The audio here is shit and I'm not surprised that people get the wrong impression on Metallica's performance here. Lars needs to start using triggers for dbass, but other than that he's still playing the songs correctly most of the time.
Explain to me what triggers are. I was never told. Please reply.
WereFromUrFace They either play a recorded drums samples of the instrument being used, for example a bass drum hit or even an iron drum(if none is actually being used), in the event that the drummer can't maintain a consistent sound for every chop. A trigger can also adjust the volume for the hits, if the the dbass kicks are too light. Lars tends to do dbass chops pretty lightly and therefore needs something to bring them to the forefront, whereas his single kicks are louder because he kicks harder when he plays slow.
+Kyle Reece Well, I would prefer to use straight up skill, unless it comes to light kick drums. Then I'll try to find something to maintain a constant volume.

Sorry to say but, Lars can't drum anymore, he can't even drum in time. It's been like this for a while, but Metallica will never kick Lars out since he's been in the band since the beginning and they're all great friends. Oh well :/

Yeah you could say that, but look at Dave Lombardo or Nicko Mcbrain, both old now, but can still kick ass on the drums and are miles ahead of Lars in skill.

Surely they watch their own vids and think. Shit Lars, you gotta get some practice in. I'm starting to think the "I love being a musician, I love music" thing is BS. They only do it because you don't make much money on albums anymore, and they have huge mansions, land and a jet to pay off. Touring is now their 9-5 job.

+anglersj024 it is mainly a Pop festival, yes, but this day was filled with metal. Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Mastodon, Rob Zombie, Ghost, Powerman 5000. But it is mainly an overall festival
Pinkpop isn't necessarily a pop festival simply because "pop" is in the name. Pop acts have played there sure, but so have many different styles of music. It's pretty diverse actually.
Non stop touring will wear a band out, Lars doesn't try as hard anymore and James's vocal cords don't get any rest. Rob is okay but Kirk needs to lay off the whammy

They didn't play Memory Remains if I remember correctly.
They played more songs ofcourse, if I'm not mistaken an 18 song setlist that was put together through an audience voting. If you look this gig up on Metallica's website or facebook page you can see the whole setlist of that day.

Why the f**k don't they write a new album?! Just an endless series of 'greatest hits' shows is getting tedious.
Why would they? They make their millions and millions off of touring. They are not into it for the music. They are into it for the money (which they make a shit ton of off touring). They are a POP band.
Those two years of Orion shows made the band broke... They're touring so much now because they have to. And that's why they haven't had a uS tour in a while. They make more touring other countries.

Not just you. James has been singing like he lost his pair a LONG TIME AGO (completely soft and neutered). Lars no longer practices AT ALL. Kirk lost whatever talent he once had. They are a shadow of their former selves.

What an entirely harmless performance... Lars still can't keep the rhythm; he plays terribly with less energy, and the energy used to be his only saving grace. Kirk noodles around without aim and expression. James all touchy-feely with the audience... The 'Newsted treatment' for Rob. Retire already!
Yeah, James has long since been neutered (post 2001). It's sickening how much of a POP band they've become.
@@Danimal300zx I think its because the crowds that they played for when they were young now have have kids and they are taking them to the shows. So I guess James felt the need to mellow out. And they are getting older.

I'm a bassist and I can play Lars's parts better than him.
Hmm...can't say I like this one. Timing terrible, drums terrible, solidity terrible. They are Metallica which means they can do what they want but seriously guys how about a few rehearsals before a show of this size. The first songs I learned were Metallica. Pull it back together guys and make us proud.

Wat een flop van Metallica:S Zoiets van ik moet spelen van Opa Smeets, maar zit liever op het schijthuis! Beetje jammer dit commercieel gedoe..
Ik hoop toch dat je je realiseert, dat dit niet de gehele show was en dat Metallica gewoon 2 uur gespeeld heeft. Daarnaast is de setlist niet door hen vastgesteld, maar werd er gestemd door degenen die een kaartje hadden.
Dus jij denkt dat metallica geen commerciële band is. Ik snap dat dit een minder concert was (Het was het niet het beste wat Metallica ooit gedaan heeft). Maar commercieel blijft het altijd.
