Wow when they took down this wall city, I was still a toddler. My parents brought me to this park and I had no idea what this place was... my parents only told me it was a place for cheap dentist and doctors. I learned more about this city from my Japanese friends here in Los Angeles just like Uncle said here!!

Fascinating. I have watched many videos & documentaries about the Walled City but this seems to give a more first hand account thanks to "Uncle Man". Thanks for this excellent upload. I am a recent subscriber & have been watching your videos daily until I see them all.

I have had the privilege of visiting Hong kong twice. The first time the walled city still existed. I walked around it but did not feel that I had the right to enter. The second time I was in Hong Kong, it was gone.
I'm not sure how I feel about this, as it was both a part of history & a viable living environment for so many of lesser income but at the same time in desperate need of help & updating or the perhaps the modern term is: gentrification.
That it is now gone with nothing for the younger generation to remember of the history, living conditions & lives of those who lived there & built Hong Kong other than a park, is a sad thing. They would know nothing about this amazing part of the history of Hong Kong other than men like "Uncle man" & your excellent videos of this place..
I hope to some day have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong again. I loved it & could live there in a heart beat if I could afford it. Cheers from Canada.

Yeah, hearing from a resident who lived there is way better than hearing from a Western documentary team that spent only a day there, pretending to know everything about that place.

Should have reconstructed a section of the place to show some of the dwellings and industry that went on in there. Then again, what do you expect of a city that demolished most of its pre-WWII historical buildings.

Crazy how nowadays it looks all sterile and spacious but back then it was all crammed to the point everything looked dark and the smell was probably equivalent to a sewage processing plant

This is the original long interview, 2.5 hours in Cantonese, it will bring you to see whole park. You can open the youtube's caption for translation, however not everything can be translated well because the difficulty of Chinese literature and Feng Shui, and the google translation is not always in accurate all time, so please refer to Part 2, I will try update the translation when time is available. But if someone really want to understand this long video content, you have to wait for google future feature....if they have better A.I. for this translation matter.

For me HK's history is far more interesting than today's HK. Reason being, there's very very little of HK's history left. They've pulled it down!! They live in a prison with gold bars...

Well in the future, our present will be a thing of the past and likely torn down. It all repeats. At least we have the internet and archives to look back on

Only very little places with high historical presence remain preserved for future generations. The price of progress is always history.

+hongkongmap Is there anyway to do something to the video to straighten the curved views i.e. make horizontal & vertical really horizontal & vertical because while i find your videos informative & useful it's difficult to view them because of this distortion effect which makes the video not natural looking i.e. it's more natural to see the world not using fish eye lens..is this a limitation of the camera used ?

Your part 1 however is ok, meaning don't have the unwanted distortion...what camera used there ? Why don't you use back the old camera to get rid this distortion problem ?

Unfortunately lots of schools in Japan totally ignore Sino-Japanese relations during WWII. For good reason - embarrassment.

    • @darkevilazn

Not just that, but their are quite a few revisionist that deny the Japanese army ever committed any war crimes.

If folks want to see footage of the place, the best documentary on it is the one made by a Austrian+HK camera crew in 1988.

It's a shame they didn't leave a part of the kowloon complex standing. As a museum piece. It's historical value is huge.

tour guides are usually annoying and not needed unless you're in the wilderness or very unsafe city. navigating yourself much more enjoyable.
