One of the keys to OLD G4 was the Hot Chick Gamer, Olivia Munn, Sarah Underwood, Morgan Webb, they brought in the guys as eyecandy if nothing else. New G4 had Frosk and Ovilee May.....that was never going to work.
Ovilee I can kinda understand cause she's kinda actually into that stuff but she isn't ever going to be the superstar of any sort of gaming oriented content, Frosk... now that's the woke angle.
I actually enjoyed the g4 reboot because at the start they were doing a lot of gaming centric stuff like esports that I otherwise wouldn't have read up on. Retro gaming stuff as well. That show hosted by Ovilee was great as well, but you could tell they eventually shifted gears to try to fit in more on Twitch by getting a bunch of popular people on there. Then everything pretty much became attack of the show lite. Far from the thing that made g4 interesting, game reviews, esports, retro gaming, it just seemed like another company trying to ingratiate itself on Twitch. The show was on TV as well, but there's already tons of dedicated esports and gaming stuff on there, so I'm not sure what g4 could have done besides what the show eventually developed into.
G4 was king in a world before twitch and early day RUclips. as much as i loved G4 back in the day i knew it was doomed when they said they were coming back. was fun to watch them try.
@@prajwalkrishnabhat5539 I honestly don't know. I don't like the vast majority of twitch streamers. His presentation feels way too put on and that haircut makes him look like a Fallout 4 NPC.
By contrast I like Asmond because he's unlikeable in a very likeable way. He's going say the quiet part loud and he's proud to be an unwashed gamer. That's pure. No decaf, no splenda. Straight caffeine and sugar.
@@GreyTide so you don't like him because of his haircut too lol I just started watching him on his other channel because je was unboxing things he let his subscribers vote on before. I don't know about the put on part doesn't seem like it to me personally
Doing the math, g4 was paying 16$/viewer, you’d have to subscribe and donate 10$ for them to break even, way to big of a production cost for 1600 viewers
I always describe when Gandalf's body was destroyed by the balrog in moria, he essentially was carried in spirit form by the eagle. When he lost his first body he was the grey, and his body was old and beat beyond repair, but when he came back as the white he just as he originally was, like brand new off the show floor.
@@CoalCoalJames What do you mean? They weren't sent as old men. Did you read the silmarilis? Age had nothing to do with their power. The reason Gandalf was originally the grey is he chose not to head the council as the white. Asmon was accurate that they were sent to guide, not to intervene directly. After gandalf fought the balrog in moria his physical body was destroyed, he was in spirit form. He then got a NEW body and returned as he ORIGINALLY WAS. He even says himself that he Forgot much that he once knew and remembered much that he had forgotten. Even his name gandalf, was strange to him and he says "that is what they called me"' Not sure why you chose to attack this but you should read more Tolkien, did you watch rings of power or something and think you know what you are talking about now?
@@Stuffystufferfield Good point. In appearance only however. It isn't as if Gandalf would show up as a young man and be stronger due to it, as Coal James implied.
There’s definitely luck involved in streaming success but I don’t think it weighs as heavy as some think. Luck is finding “true love” but it’s not what’s going to keep her around.
I feel the most bad for the background employees, and of the "Main cast", Jirard. He never looked comfortable there at all, any time he was on camera, and they put him in this weird spot where he could play along, or get eaten alive on socials. Lose lose situation for the big man.
The main reason I watched G4 back in the day was to try and catch the gaming tournaments. Loved it all back in the day, it just had the right vibe. The industry needs to figure that out, people mainly need the right vibe to want to keep watching. No cringe, no politics, no bs, etc.
Gandalf is basically a puppet that Olorin uses to interact with people in Middle Earth. He never dies, but looses his puppet only once to a Balrog then stopped using it after the job was done ;P
One of the very big reasons that G4 was successful back in the day was that the hosts went onto the other shows and hosted and mingled with the other hosts! For example, Kevin Pereira went on X-Play or Morgan Webb went on Attack of the Show. This stuff really didn’t happen this time around, and the viewers on some of the shows didn’t really get to see the host of the other shows, which would’ve given them more personality and viewership in my opinion.
The amount of people that don't know Asmon is wrong about Gandalf but just go along with it like they know the lore is nuts. Asmon is not correct. Gandalf was no longer a Mayar after being sent to Middle Earth by Manwe. When Manwe selected which Mayar to send it was under the condition that they were to live the rest of their lives out as no longer Mayar. When he died fighting Durin's Bane, he was basically given a second chance and slight level up. Source: I just re read the Silmarillian, The People's of Middle Earth, and The Book of Lost Tales over the past 3 weeks because I hadn't read the Silmarillian in over 15 years and I hadn't read the other two ever; and I was inspired by Rings of Power to do a deep dive.
I remember when g4 was first around and I loved it, didn’t even know it returned until this. Seems like it wasn’t as good. And it wasn’t a show it was a channel. Google’s “current” channel was amazing back then. Randomized shows called pods that were like 5-30 minutes. Pretty woke for todays standards but it was like most of Vices reporters and similar types got early starts there. Think Al Gore created it
Him knowing that Gandaf can't die means that he atleast read some lore which means he probably dislikes Rings of Power. Rings of Power is only for stereotypical consumers who don't care about lore nor legacy. They just wanna watch something during dinner time.
Luck is always involves to some extent. Saying otherwise is just coping. Hard work is also very important but doesnt always lead to anything. I feel luck tends to really rear its head when someone gets their "big break" then from there its just gotta keep grinding. Josh Strife Hayes has a very realistic viewpoint on this.
Kotaku isn't one that deserves to keep going unless they change tactics like yesterday. They're doing the same things that G4 did. They aren't gaming journalists, they're ideologues. And IGN has gotten closer to that than they ever should have.
To say the reason someone pops off is merely luck is ridiculous. However to deny there is also an element of luck that goes into it, is disingenuous. It takes talent first, hard work 2nd, and then a little luck 3rd.
X play, AotS , web soup , arena , ninja warrior , pulse , portal, icons , code monkeys , and (my favorite) Cheat! are all the shows that I tuned into when I was younger
Gandalf's body did die though, he says so himself. The Maiar that were sent to Middle Earth in the second age were sent by the Valar in mortal bodies in order to stifle the power of their undying spirit - they could not change form and could not wield their power with impunity. So YES, he did die. But he was returned by Eru himself to finish the task that was beset to him. Olorin, Gandalf's Maiar name, was written into the song exactly the way Eru planned.
@@DD-mp1kl considering that his human shell is just that HUMAN he most probably DID. Like moths to a flame humans quickly expire in Valinor. Gandalf as we know him absolutely ceased to be at some point AGAIN. The undying spirit of Olorin went on to sing Eru’s second song with the rest of the elves and the beings of the void once arda fades away. Read your silmarillion y’all. Asmon doesn’t read books, he says so himself. Just cause you read the same wiki as him don’t mean shit lmao.
A call center I worked at (I will not name the company for various reasons) called a fire drill and everyone evacuated. While waiting for the "All Clear" the VP came out and advised everyone that they were making cutbacks and disabled numerous employees' security cards. Basically, you went to the door and if your card still opened it, you still had a job. Those persons whos card did not work had no job and were sent home. I kept my job, but we never got an explanation. I left after a few more months for another call center job at a better company.
Biggest issue I had with the new G4 was that they weren't trying to do anything new. Most of it felt like bad rehashes of their old shows... when their old shows are what caused the channel to originally fail. They needed something new and interesting, and honestly some better personalities in a lot of cases. I know several times I tried to watch their new content, it would feel like they were laughing at some inside jokes that I didn't understand. Anyone new trying to watch the channel probably felt some of this, so they alienated potential new viewers.
The big thing people miss is that a lot of the people at G4 had history of controversy like frosk and austin creed. If you look at the history of who they chose... The messaging was tone deaf from day one. I didn't even know name your price was on G4... I avoided G4 cause I knew of frosk accusing every former employer to their new employer their whole career (LPL to LEC to LSC etc) and if you know about the paige stuff... austin creed being their biggest star is ... well look it up ...
Relic of a bygone era. I watched G4 a lot back in the day but couldnt be bothered to watch this iteration. Just doesn't work in today's world kind of like Blockbuster
Gandalf the physical body died but his spirit is immortal(Olórin). Upon his death of his body, he has to regain strength and create a new one which from what I read, takes awhile but Eru(basically middle-earth's 'God') sent him back in the same/similar body. Sauron is also an immortal spirit.
Imagine the disappointment of first seeing CHEATTERS on the network lineup of a VIDEOGAME FOCUSED NETWORK , waiting all night for it to come on. And it having nothing to do with video game cheat codes. Lol what a fail I still blame that for their original downfall
The big issue with G4's return was the main cast of the show. They were all ACTIVELY alienating their own audience and becoming a corporate version of WingsOfRedemption, an example being Frosk's outburst. Adam Sessler also being as two faced as possible didn't help it either.
IDK who tf thought bringing back a gaming related TV Show was a good idea. Like you don't have to be a business genius to know that in the current day and age of the internet gaming news/content is literally everywhere. The are RUclips channels ran by less than a handful of people that provide just as good or better content than the new G4 could. Of course it was not sustainable
As much as I enjoyed Adam Sessler's schtick when I was younger, he really has that "how do you do fellow kids" energy now. And Gerard is great, but the writing was on the wall for a while with new G4. There just isn't really a niche for it anymore. The niche it was looking to fill is already well-served by gaming youtubers and streamers. They really needed to get more creative with their content format or just knock it out of the park to be even marginally successful, and they didn't really do that unfortunately.
If it wasnt for Frosk i would have watched more g4tv. I didnt like her back from the league of legends days and especially how she left the LEC really showed me what kind of person she was. Then i saw her rant against "sexist gamers" and that was that. Sucks g4tv stuck with her and let her sink the ship. I am sure i am not alone.
Asmon is coping about the luck thing. Getting success does (usually) require lots of hard work and talent, but I can point you to dozens of small channels and streamers who put in just as much if not more effort than successful streamers who never get traction even after years of grinding at it. You can have a giant pile of hard work and talent that just sort of sits there like a pile of wood, Luck is the spark that sets it off and lets everyone see it.
I always remember that story where a man made a deal with the devil and he will grant him 1 wish. He asked for talent, he was really good but the mistake he made is he didnt wish to be popular.
Agreed for sure. Hes definitely coping, for every asmon theres hundreds to thousands of people who put in the work as you said. Even sodapoppin acknowledges how luck based this gig is, dont get me wrong Asmon definitely put in the work but luck 100% plays a role in his success
There was nothing to like about G4. If it had survived the best case we would have gotten the same tired, out of touch, corporate ass kissing we get inside game informers. Frosk's unhinged rant did us all a favor.
Attack of the show was still super entertaining honestly. Kevin pererra and Kassim g were hilarious. I'm apauled that you didn't mention Kevin Pererra. He was the original host of AOTS and he brought the same amazing energy to the new version. How could you forget Kevin
A dozen employees would have been a lot actually. To run a production 7-10 is the optimal and a dozen would have complete coverage and overlap. You should be hiring people for two jobs(or more) that take 4-9 hours a day to complete for them to complete all their tasks in a day. For 2-3 30min videos a week and two 1-2hour weekly productions. Then add in tech ads for two or three adds for thoses large productions.
The point about insider trading is super accurate. Most companies shield non-E-board employees from information that impacts stock price and it's fucked up. Insider trading for me but not for thee. Also it's illegal but we don't prosecute the majority of offenders, politicians especially included.
The Maiar can absolutely die. Valinor is the earthly realm of the Maiar, but if they are apart of Middle Earth depending on the context of their physical embodiment there is potential of final death for them. What happens to their spirit exactly isn't explained; Depending on the context they can also die, without the potential of returning to middle earth.
the truth is with big info like that they rarely tell people anything until it is announced in the press (like mergers etc) because they want to avoid people telling and info spreading before they have control over it and it has something to do with stocks etc etc and I am wondering was it really the case that they found out from an article or they didnt read internal emails..? ;p
Fun Fact: Gandalf's passage through the Mines of Moria, dying to save his companions and returning as "Gandalf the White", as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ. Like Jesus who carried his cross for the sins of mankind, Frodo carried a burden of evil on behalf of the whole world. Yes, Tolkien took a lot of inspiration from the Bible.
Panda does the reverse of this. It signs on competitive Smash and FG players and then makes them become content creators. People want to watch experts in their field but the top players are usually young, so even when those who have signed on get older they are still making money cause they become larger personalities catering to casuals and hardcore players. Plus even if they are let go or move on it doesn't hurt them as much in the long run cause they developed a sustainable audience
That was a shame... I don't really watch "TV" Anymore, but I've seen g4 a small handful of times.. it seemed like a good concept too I got suggested this too.. as I was scrolling down. Kotaku and ign have been around for a while.. ign was "the go to" for a while

13:26 There's a lot of luck people don't even think about... like when and where you were born and generally your family, upbringing, etc., your personality and how you naturally behave, hobbies and stuff you like/find entertaining and much more... there's little to nothing you can/could do about those things but they have a huge impact on the probability of your success ...BUT it's obvious that you'll have some extraordinary individuals who will fight and suffer thru all the disadvantages and will eventually become famous/rich/popular and then some individuals who have all the advantages from the beginning yet they are not able to grasp the opportunity and use it to their advantage
just look at what Machinima Respawn went to. In my opinion the reason they failed due to changing audience and producers/corporations are always going to be slower to adapt than smaller, independent companies, as we now see with AAA vs Independent studios. What they should have done is change it to be like that MTV show with the failed clips off the internet, but with streamers playing videogames

Asmon: “You know I’m something of a nerd myself.”
We need a 4-5 hour video of Asmon just talking about Lord of the Rings lore
If he got the lore right.
Sessler is going absolutely unhinged on his twitter
No kidding, I just took a look. When did he go insane? He seemed like a level headed person over the years now has been a nutcase for a long time. Sad to see.
@@rexleeh he’s been like that for a while now , probably around 2016 when trump was president. He just told someone to fight him irl lol

Asmon is spitting pure fire for like a year straight. What a beast
You GO frosk!! (*Clap like a seal*)
I love how I didn’t know about G4 coming back until it was cancelled
It's funny how many creators I hate but am willing to watch if Asmogold provides commentary.
Why would you hate Ludwig? I'm just interested and don't wanna argue.
Right lmao. I wouldn’t be caught dead watching Ludwig personally but Asmon definitely makes it easier.
@@GreyTide so you don't like him because of his haircut too lol
I just started watching him on his other channel because je was unboxing things he let his subscribers vote on before. I don't know about the put on part doesn't seem like it to me personally
Gandalf cant die, he just has a respawn timer.
Doing the math, g4 was paying 16$/viewer, you’d have to subscribe and donate 10$ for them to break even, way to big of a production cost for 1600 viewers
x-play, attack of the show, and cheat were phenomenal shows back in the day
I loved how Asmon had the chance to defend Jesus or Gandalf who both didn't die twice, and without question jumps right to Gandalfs defence. lol XD
asmond knows more about lotr than the people making rings of power
Even his name gandalf, was strange to him and he says "that is what they called me"'
Not sure why you chose to attack this but you should read more Tolkien, did you watch rings of power or something and think you know what you are talking about now?
@@Stuffystufferfield Good point. In appearance only however. It isn't as if Gandalf would show up as a young man and be stronger due to it, as Coal James implied.
“And the Jesus thing..? Idk . Idk about that” his inflection in that sentence made me laugh pretty hard through my nose 😂
Gandalf helped sing the universe into existence. He cannot die. Thank you Asmon this is why we love you.
I think he was referring to him going into the undying lands, valar, but Valar is just illuminated lands of the elves, no death there.
>Insult audience

Many such cases.
There’s definitely luck involved in streaming success but I don’t think it weighs as heavy as some think.
Luck is finding “true love” but it’s not what’s going to keep her around.
Luck is like finding the new meta, before it catches on and becomes popular.
Asmon didn’t get lucky with his stream. He has a knack for this and he makes good content.
1:24 the one hole in your argument is that Sauron was also an immortal spirit - the same type that Gandalf was. But I agree. 😂
Illhuvatar probably wouldn't be so forgiving of that soul upon it's return lol
Think Al Gore created it
I miss attack of the show arguably one of my favorite shows of all time
... It does add up, it adds up to a negative number.... Thank you Asmon. Perfectly put.
Hearing asmon talk about Gandalf really makes me want a video of his opinions on rings of power 😂

Frosk and Crigler were the wooden stake to G4s vampire.
Adding Will and Austin gave me hope.... 😔
Gandalf never died. He just ascended.
Ludwig: Only three people have died twice: Jesus, Ganda--
Asmon: Imma stop you right there
Gandalf's body did die though, he says so himself. Olorin, Gandalf's Maiar name, was written into the song exactly the way Eru planned.
he didn’t die TWICE.

Krillin: hold my beer
The big thing people miss is that a lot of the people at G4 had history of controversy like frosk and austin creed. If you look at the history of who they chose... The messaging was tone deaf from day one. I didn't even know name your price was on G4... I avoided G4 cause I knew of frosk accusing every former employer to their new employer their whole career (LPL to LEC to LSC etc) and if you know about the paige stuff... austin creed being their biggest star is ... well look it up ...
I loved “Hey Donna” & “Name Your Price” so much. 😢💔
One BIG other thing we should talk about is how these companies recently are essentially firing people without letting them know first
Lugwig straight up looks like Homelander. 🤣
Never heard of g4 but just Asmon telling facts about Gandalf was more interesting than all the episodes of Rings of Power. Thank you Asmon.
Frosk is fired hell yeah
Relic of a bygone era. I watched G4 a lot back in the day but couldnt be bothered to watch this iteration. Just doesn't work in today's world kind of like Blockbuster
Gandalf the physical body died but his spirit is immortal(Olórin). Upon his death of his body, he has to regain strength and create a new one which from what I read, takes awhile but Eru(basically middle-earth's 'God') sent him back in the same/similar body. Sauron is also an immortal spirit.
The saying goes “the harder I work the luckier I get.”
G4 became cheatersTV (the show legit about couples cheating) and then faded away like a thanos fart, came back and was just like "Hey fellow kids!"
G4 said if you don't like it don't watch so we didn't lol!
Thanks for the Gandalf correction x
Completionist deserved better, that's for sure.
It sort of goes hand in hand.
You will never get a hold of the chance even if its in front of you without hardwork.
Thank you for setting the Gandalf lore straight.
There was nothing to like about G4. If it had survived the best case we would have gotten the same tired, out of touch, corporate ass kissing we get inside game informers. Frosk's unhinged rant did us all a favor.
18:46 Asmon did the Act Man signature sign out
The most important thing here is Asmon shutting down that fake news about Gandalf
He (Gandalf) didn't die the first time. His physical form did and his spirit form was sent back by the Valar.
Attack of the show was still super entertaining honestly. Kevin pererra and Kassim g were hilarious. I'm apauled that you didn't mention Kevin Pererra. He was the original host of AOTS and he brought the same amazing energy to the new version. How could you forget Kevin
G4?..More like G poor
Part of the reason it shut down it seems, based on all the comments about how people found out about their jobs, is nobody was at bloody work.
Dude if they picked up ninja warrior again they would have done much better. G4 didn’t need to be exclusively videogames.
Mental health leave an they weren't even on for a year, let that sink in!! How incredibly soft😂😂
I literally didn't know they were "back" until they got cancelled...
I genuinely thought that G4 ended like a decade ago. I was surprised to hear it.
I miss Code Monkies.
the truth is with big info like that they rarely tell people anything until it is announced in the press (like mergers etc) because they want to avoid people telling and info spreading before they have control over it and it has something to do with stocks etc etc and I am wondering was it really the case that they found out from an article or they didnt read internal emails..?
I don't really watch "TV" Anymore, but I've seen g4 a small handful of times.. it seemed like a good concept too
I got suggested this too.. as I was scrolling down.
Kotaku and ign have been around for a while.. ign was "the go to" for a while
11:30. Irrelevant.. none of these people had their names in the title.
I'll keep walkin... "Just because their talent doesn't mean they'll be successful". And youre wrong.. because I'm getting numbers.
Numbers don't mean a thing only laws... And "I" am the "IP". 😂😂

You have your own name and place..
I have my own name and place.
Thing is asmon/Zack. I was first.
Frosk and Adam killed G4.
13:26 There's a lot of luck people don't even think about... like when and where you were born and generally your family, upbringing, etc., your personality and how you naturally behave, hobbies and stuff you like/find entertaining and much more... there's little to nothing you can/could do about those things but they have a huge impact on the probability of your success
...BUT it's obvious that you'll have some extraordinary individuals who will fight and suffer thru all the disadvantages and will eventually become famous/rich/popular and then some individuals who have all the advantages from the beginning yet they are not able to grasp the opportunity and use it to their advantage
The second death of Gandalf was his soul dying when Rings of power came out ^ ^
I’m not the only one who thinks Ludwig has “my dad will sue your dad” face right?
just look at what Machinima Respawn went to. In my opinion the reason they failed due to changing audience and producers/corporations are always going to be slower to adapt than smaller, independent companies, as we now see with AAA vs Independent studios. What they should have done is change it to be like that MTV show with the failed clips off the internet, but with streamers playing videogames
I had the exact same thought about gandalf since i'm a huge lotr nerd. Nothing gets passed this man
