Great video, and narration. One thing I could suggest is maybe add a few zoom in views in post. I had a bit of trouble prying the case open too, so left a few small marks. I would suggest a tip for others is to not slide the spudger/tool along the tight parts if possible.
Only God can judge me, Opus.
But yes, I'll add some zooms in for people on the next one :). Good suggestion! - Thor
So for those who want to shell swap... Gonna be a no go for most. Thanks for the great video!
Shell swap is totally possible as long as the front plate has the screen in it already. AYN has said that they're pro repair, so let's see if they start selling parts. - Thor
Thanks for the teardown vid Thor!
The black part of the retention clip is what flips up. Just throwing that out there for anyone watching this video because I broke mine trying to flip up the white piece
Thank you for letting us know, and ouch sorry that happened friend
Great video man, thanks for the trouble of showing us the inside! I'd be scared to open mine unless absolutely necessary.
It was a little nerve wracking, but its not so bad once you get going. Glad to be of service! - Thor
This video was so much more helpful than Taki's
Glad you enjoyed! More on the way.
Bicycle playing cards work great at getting Adhesive up
I'll try that next time! - Thor
thanks, i will need to replace my screen and this video will help me.
I get the use of adhesive for batteries overall, however I never understood the need to use super strong stuff to do so!
Its not going anywhere anyways.
Not just the Ayn Odin, its every other brand too.
I repair mobile phones a little hint for you just open the part where the sd card is you get easy access so you won’t damage the shell in any way
And for the battery to take easy offf use a little bit of isopropanol it will help but not too much after that you can’t glue the battery back in and the vibration motor so it won’t vibrate freely it will be annoying
In the future, maybe AYN can use pull tabs on the battery adhesive. Just to make the repairability easier. I see it in phone teardowns. I can see myself changing the battery of my Odin in the future.
Was any of your L1/R1 loose?
Loose, no. But the L1 button is a bit softer feeling than the R1. Not as clicky. - Thor
@@retrohandhelds Exactly as mine. After the teardown, was it better?
Any idea if its face buttons are compatible to any other system for replacement?
Its been discovered that the D-pad is almost perfectly swappable with PS Vita. Thank you for this resource video! It really helps new DIY'ers like myself. Thumbs up
I don't think they are. They might be custom fit. I'll update this reply if I find out differently though! And you're welcome!
Is it possible to swap the ABXY button locations so that it has a layout of the xbox? I ask since there is a setting in the options to set the buttons to it.
Nope. They're molded with orientation and placement pins similar to Xbox ABXY buttons so they can't be moved around. - Thor
Great video. Can the abxy buttons be switched around to make it physically look like the Xbox layout?
Not without cutting button standoffs, they all are different and designed to fit in their designated holes. Someone has done it already but there is 1mm of play and causes the buttons to turn sideways slightly
Joysticks and battery rather easy to get to most common points of failure when purely used company offers replacements = nice investment.
taking apart whilst it was on is akin to operating without anaesthetic lol
I'm a monster! - Thor
My AYN Odin Pro's battery needs to be replaced. Hopefully I can get it repaired or replaced quickly. The battery expanded and eventually burst!
@@markryan9132 same here! Did you found a good replacement? Any model or SN that I should looking for
@viniciuscu1 I emailed AYN and they wanted pictures of the problem. They said I could ship it to them for repairs but it's still in its case..
Let’s see this
Great video! Is it possible to upgrade the internal memory? I have one and was looking to upgrade the storage. Haven’t found any videos showing this.
Keep up the great work.
Not the internal memory but you can add an SD card as internal storage.
-Aish
I'm not sure if you can help me with this, but I've been in a communication loop with AYN for ages. Can't get right thumbstick to work for love nor money.
Ayn sent me a replacement stick but still won't work. Any other suggestions? Tried switching sticks and no difference.
I'm a novice, can you upgrade the processor also?
Nope! All that sort of stuff is always soldered down and basically impossible to replace without serious specialty equipment. - Thor
This is very informative, thank you! Ayn has shipped me a new screen, because mine becomes unresponsive to touch pretty frequently. Was hoping to gain some more insight into how swapping that particular assembly might get done. Are there any steps that i could skip if I'm just hoping to get the screen out, or does everything need to be taken out individually? Thank you again!!
Happy it provided you with what ya needed! I would play it careful and take everything out, good luck, and thanks for watching!!
A little more information: the screen literally just arrived just now, and it turns out that they sent me the full front shell with the screen attached already.
@@brianrtfm8775 ah fantastic! That saves a big headache.
Mine came with a defective screen. I heard that the Odin would be repairable, but after seeing this, idk anymore. After the only 2 teardowns on RUclips, I haven't seen how to remove the screen. Now I'm afraid.
If anyone ever gets to needing to replace a screen and isn’t super experienced with this stuff, I’d 100% just recommend sending it back. There’s so many things that can go wrong with trying to replace a screen. A ribbon cable can break somewhere, you could lose a screw, you could lose a rubber membrane for one of the buttons, you could break one of the plastic clips, you could damage the shell, the battery could burst and literally catch on fire…. Too many risks in my opinion.
Great video. I've just got my Odin and after a few days of setting up I've realised the Up & Right buttons are linked together so when I push either it triggers both.
I thought this was an emulator issue at first (that I had inputted the controls incorrectly) but when I go onto the Main settings>Odin settings>Joystick calibration & Gamepad test and click either button it shows I am hitting both at the same time. I've tried pressing both very lightly or right in the opposite corners.
Any ideas?
Interesting. The dpad membrane sounds like it might be misaligned. If its a short though (bad board), AYN will send you a replacement daughter board instead of having to wait for a full unit. - Thor
Welcome to a My Mate Retro Game Thor tear down video. 😜
My pro front shell started cracking so Ayn sent me a new front shell with screen attached. Will the side leds and power/volume button ribbons come out easily with heat? I see theyre attached to the shell with adhesive and Im afraid of tearing them when switching over to the new shell...
Hi! congratulations for the video first of all, I apologize, I have to ask you something, is it easy to replace the fan? Because I bought a new ayn odin pro 10 days ago and I am very satisfied, a small problem is that since yesterday the fan has stopped working, completely dead. I've already contacted the seller and I'm waiting for an answer since it's under warranty but I wanted to find a way not to send it to assistance because who knows when it will get back to me repaired. Do you have any ideas/advice?
I would contact AYN directly for this, I believe the fan is replaceable but I'd confirm your options with them, and you'd want to buy the same fan part. They may have you mail it back to fix. Ayntec.com
Omg we have the same screwdriver setttt
Do someone know what the little knob is attached to the heat sink?
Ripped one cable off while doin a repaste, but i cannot find whats not working now, at first glance everything works as it should
I'm pretty sure it's a rumble motor.
-Aish
Micro would of been better than mini
what are you talking about
Hi, just replaced my case from black to white, and encountered strange probleem. Everything is put together, but when i close the bottom half , odin starts reboot, again and again. When i open it again, everything works fine again. Was checking if it pushing against something, but everything seems fine. What can be the problem?☹️☹️
One of the clips might be pressing against the power button when you close it, it would explain why it doesn't happen when it's open.
-Aish
@@retrohandhelds Hi ,yes solved yesterday, it was just that apperantly heh, thanks 👍
friend I have a question to this console you can put another hard drive with greater capacity and another larger memory
Hard drive no but you can use a large SD card.
-Aish
@@retrohandhelds And the ram memory can be put a bigger friend
So, would anyone have any idea why the Odin Pro's screen would suddenly stop working? I just got mine about 2 weeks ago and the screen won't turn on/flickers different shades of black. It still charges but that's all it can do and yes, I've tried booting it into safety mode with the volume and power button combo, but the black screen still shows regardless. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, the same thing is happening to me now. I tried contacting them and they reply today asking if I wanted them to send me a new screen. After seeing this video, there is no way I can replace a screen myself. Did you get any resolution?
@@sergioperez2853 Unfortunately no. I tried fixing it myself by getting into the battery, but the thing caught on fire and burnt it to a crips. AYN customer service did get back with me eventually but by then it was too late.
@@shinnok5337 man I’m very sorry to hear. I hope they come back to me with a solution.
Does the odin pro have a SIM card slot?
Nope!
Missed opportunity... :(
Just remember who you're working for.
Internet Likes, obviously!
@@retrohandhelds It is from Tuco's "Tight, tight, tight" scene in Breaking Bad.
