Excellent teaching practices, Yvan! A great teacher makes sure that they give the student the tools to be successful from the start. The fact that Emily (a fantastic student, by the way!) was already enjoying the satisfaction of learning and making major improvement before the lesson was even over... that level of teaching requires such deep knowledge of the field that you could relate it to just about anyone with any background, and guide them to proficiency in a such a way that they'll never doubt their ability to master the skill with practice. Instilling that kind of confidence so quickly is what every teacher should strive for, and you do it as well as anyone I've ever seen. Kudos to both of you, and thank you for setting the bar so high for quality detailing content on RUclips.

I've had my fair share of challenges with the rotary becuase " I" was Polishing AND NOT letting the machine do the work. I'm gona go home today and but out my Milwaukee Rotary and practice what I just saw. Thank you Soo Much for putting out this content... As a Detailer I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!! 👍🏽🙏🏽

Thank you. I have a 20 year old vehicle and the car care centers that I could afford were not enough in the long term. The moist, clean pads, and initial damp towel to wipe off the polish cleared up a problem I have had in the past. I now have a better chance at getting my babe further down the road with dignity.
I have watched so many "Tutorials"!!! on polishing and they all say a beginner has to use a DA. My wax supplier here in Glasgow always tells me that his Rotary is his go to tool for polishing and I tell him I am a total novice so I tell him it is a DA for me. Maybe I should listen to him and try a Rotary. Sometimes I think detailers on RUclips try to scare us so that no more detailers go down the route of polishing and steal work away from them. This was the best Tutorial on polishing I have ever watched. Thanks again.
I am about to polish my Black GMC pickup and purchased a rotary polisher and kit off Amazon, never polished a vehicle but I did a nice ski boat I had awhile back and was very impressed, using an older rotary with a large pad. But I watched your video and now I feel confident enough to tackle my truck, its a 1997 GMC Ext cab with still very nice factory paint. Thanks for all the tips and wish me luck.
I've just brough a polisher for a couple of vehicles, this is just what i needed, thank you! Can i just point out, when using any rotary machine, the young lady should have her hair tied up, getting into odd positions while working could get her hair wrapped in the machine...I've seen it happen, it happens fast.
I’ve been trying to master my rotary, to a point where, I couldn’t do it. Hung it back up and continued with my DA. This video has showed me where I’ve been going wrong. Less grip is best results. All of the jumping around has been because of being too tight on the machine, which is where the DA wants to be, where it rotates and oscillates. I’ll give the rotary another outing in the spring and see if I can finally master it. Thanks for such a good video tutorial 👍🏻
Thanks, Emily and thanks to the guys at DIY, I have been wanting to try and put a finish on my 10 year old Jaguar, but was hesitant. now, I feel more confident after watching this. well done !
Would using a slightly dripping microfibre cloth that’s be dunked in your rimless then gently held against the waffle pad as you spin it up for a second or 2 work with both cleaning and making the waffle pad damp rather than keep removing it from the backing plate. Also for those who are looking into polishing a vehicle, I can strongly recommend getting a test panel from a scrap yard to help you get use to the feel of your machine polisher
I’ve been detailing for 33 years. The last 10 years I’ve been using the Flex 3401 and occasionally the Rupes Bigfoot mark 3. Like many I’ve avoided the direct rotary machine but after watching this video I’m excited to buy one and use the waffle pads. I’ve seen many cars buffed with a rotary and the clear had crazy trail lines noticeable in the sun from bad technique. Thank you
This was so awsome! literally everything ive been needing to watch as i just bought a DA polisher. Most people i talk to tell me im going to end up messing up my paint doing it myself. I will also be getting a rotary now. Thanks again!
Bravo on your pronunciation of Oconomowoc Yvan. Emily thanks so much for putting yourself out there to be taught and help everyone else learn. That's something not many people will let themselves do and you made it look easy!
Great work and she did a very good job! We all struggle the first few times using a polisher on a big vehicle but I thought she picked up quickly. The Fed jeweling pad is therapeutic to me and even doing just a two section pass as polishing speed adds a ton of gloss. Thank you for another great video!
How does rinseless wash clean polish out of a pad? It's a solution designed to not remove waxes and sealants but yet it just washes polish out of a pad?
When you polished the drivers door and pointed out that there were still some scratches, if you were going for the next level would you go with a more aggressive DA (ie 21mm) or more aggressive pad (ie DIY Wool Pad)?
I just bought a polisher and plan to polish first car soon but I cannot find anything on the pars types. What I mean is his pad is waffle like but when you look at options there are tons more flat with straight lines through them. Which one is better, his type puts less surface area on panel is this a safer option also thinking less heat? Or is there nearly no difference between this or the straight line groove ones?
Great video! Question: I used a very light general purpose polish before ceramic coating and it really cleaned up the clearcoat. What it didn’t do is get out some of the light swirl marks. What’s a good slightly more aggressive polish for a beginner to use if you want to do a two-step process instead of just one real light polish? next time I do a ceramic coating, I’ll probably do it two-step to make sure and remove some of the light swirls.
If you professionally fell trees for a living, you must be perfectly comfortable using a full-sized chainsaw everyday, although you have other complimentary cutting tools. The fuel-operated huge chainsaw is still your primary tool of the trade. Identically, any genuine professional detailer’s main tool of the trade is the Rotary Buffer. For a black 2014 Audi Rs5 could i use the wool /red jeweling combo followed up with the C6 APP to prepare for Hydro Lite ceramic coating? Or you thinks its too harsh for Audi paint for wool
I know why people burn through the paint with rotary polishers because I've done it 20 years ago. We was using a makita with a very fluffy wool pad on the highest speed but the problem was the paint was not factory but it was brand new. As in a week or two. So the paint isn't even close to being cured, the polisher is on the highest setting, and we was using the wrong pad and cutting compound. Some cutting compounds are very abrasive. We was doing this for a showroom finish. We has completely wet sanded the entire paint and got every single fish eye and orange peel out. But if you hit the edge of a hood of a freshly painted vehicle with what I just described, I guarantee that it will burn right through. Aftermarket paint is never as tough as factory just as Yvan has said several times in his videos
I use a wool pad and heavy cut on paint only a few hours old at the body shop when the painter over bakes the cars and gets solvent popping on the surface of the paint. Yes, it's very possible to wool pad and heavy cut on fresh paint but you also have to watch edges or even throw tape on that tricky edge to protect it if needed. 20 cents worth of tape is better than $200-300 of new paint and the embarrassment of the whole bodyshop knowing you burned through. We all can and do make mistakes, even after polishing for 34 years but we try to minimize those days 😂 As you get experienced you learn where you can go, and how you need to hold the machine for different edges or directions, especially transisioning lines . When your new, you don't know where your WHOLE pad is, as much so tape is more important than ever.
Hi Yvan, I'm a beginner and very curious about the function that a detailing light can switch the CCT and have much higher CRI, how is that help to polishing a car and in what situation should we use different CCT?
@@diydetailofficial Thank you for your reply Yvan. One more question, why a detailing light need high CRI? I tried use a work light with Ra80 and it can still see the paint defect, and that confuse me what the real meaning of high CRI for detailing lights.
is gold standard safe with piano black surfaces? and can I just wipe the polish off by spraying ceramic gloss then wipe, for the whole car? seems like a legit paint enhancement method
Yes it is! We prefer to wipe with a short nap towel, barely damp from your Rinseless Wash bucket, to remove polish. Then you've got a slightly damp surface and then you just use a light spray/mist of Ceramic Gloss onto the paint, followed by a plush dry towel until it's all dry...this is a great way to polish and protect in *almost* one step
@Yvan, what size polisher do you prefer more and why? I have about 30yr old Porter Cable 6” DA now, but would like to move to a M18. I was going to go with the 15mm, but a couple of people are telling to move up to the 21mm. Thanks in advance for your invite and thoughts
Great video!! Yvan has the perfect voice and personality for an instructor. Calming. On a side note: What brush did you use to apply the tire dressing? ...Nevermind, I found the video about your tire dressing and the brush. :)
@diydetailofficial guys how often do you wash the pads when are cutting/polishing? Is there any rule about that? And does your golden spray leave a protective seal like wax ? Or after polishing should I apply wax or something like that? Thanks so much you are a legend guys 🤙🏽
The rule is simple, never put clean polish on a dirty pad, meaning clean it before applying polish. DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish is a pure abrasive, it has no protection and leaves nothing on the surface
Hi, I bout a car that it’s new, I know we should descontaminate, clay, polish a sealed .my question is what polisher brand do you recommend for a begginer? Thanks you for your vids
I'd skip the clay on a newer car if it feels smooth...they do scratch the paint some. I prefer to clean with varsol for tar or methyl hydrate for tree sap (a type ofalcohol from hardware paint section) before ever pulling out a clay bar.
Excellent video! You have a new subscriber here! I was told the same misinformation! I have a black 2011 Chevy Avalanche that needs some serious paint correction that i want to do myself!
At the 25-minute point and discovery of the scratches below the drivers mirror. Could you have done the 5-5-5 process with that orbital sander to remove them?
Is it safe to say to just use a polish on micro scratches and no compounds? I plan on keeping my vehicle a long time and don't think compounds are a wise decision. I recently bought a 2021 Ford Expedition Black and it has some micro scratches. You almost can not see them unless you look closely.
The missing info for me is I want to know how long do we work on the section per one spray of compound. How do we know when to stop? I have a DA brand new but I've never used it, now I'm searching for the rotary one, although I might try to use the Ryobi sander instead 🤭
Sir When I polish the rotary machine with hard foam to my detona grey car. Polish marks will always be there. I use wax polish on my car. I am from India
@@diydetailofficial thanks sir. My car is like my family member, like my son. So I do polish at home. I have practical knowledge but I am not a degree holder or a professional. But my family members treat my car as a vehicle. You know women are women.
Im using an 800 rpm polisher, and I am having an extremely difficult time to keep the pad flat with the techniques shown in this video. Do i need a 600 rpm polisher? Thank you very much.
Hey, what is the best procedure to prime a pad in Europe, since your gold standard polish is not available yet. I have found on other channels a technique that is called "pick up a bead", where you basically put a straight line of polish on the car and then pick it up with rotary running and then you start polishing. Would you recommend this over the 5 or so dots on the pad? I appreciate the answer, and have a great day!
Picking up a bead was popular in the 70’s, but uses too much product. Just dampen your pad with DIY Detail Rinseless Wash. For the EU, our list of distributors is growing. Https://diydetail.com/pages/distributors
Awesome content! I have a black car and soon I will try the rotary polisher! (Hope to get better results since my previous attempt was with DA polisher and it didnt cut as I was expecting…)
I don’t think you should buy a whole new polisher unless the dual action wasn’t very good. Maybe buy a Maxshine m8s as a da but if you had a sort of cheaper one the experience could be different due to quality as well as the polish and compound or one step polish you used. As well as if you washed the car properly and decontaminated it before. And usually they add wax and sealent to make it shine so just make sure your analyzing everything before investing more of your money
@@broken2550thanks for the tips! I am using a reasonable DA machine (not high end as flex or rupes but it is between low-mid range), so maybe my technique is not great.. I used wool rupes pads the blue and yellow and polish was Scholl S20 black. Also tried Meguiars Compound first step and Meg Polish for second step. My car is an audi so maybe it is because of the type of clear coat which is thick and requires a rotary for cutting such deep scratches.
Regarding prep I know that is key and did quimical and mechanical decon with claybar and proper pre-wash and after polishing also proper wash with panel prep before applying ceramic coating. I think i removed 70-80% of the scratches but since it is a black car is more obvious when you look at it.. 😑
As I love detailing I would love to remove almost 90-95% of the scratches but I know that sometimes it is not possible… will try rotary and improve my technique on DA too.
@@FranciscoFernandes-zu5dq I have a Maxshine m8s dual action it cost me like 90$ and it came with 3 pads and a one step polish. It works pretty great for me it came with a red polishing pad, blue cutting and a yellow medium pad I believe as well as a one step polish. I’ve only worked on quite oxidized paint so the results are extremely clear so I couldn’t give any specific advice but test out certain things. Maybe you still have sealent or wax that is not letting the polish actually work into the paint and clear coat. Maybe your using to little or maybe your are being to fast or to slow. Try it out. And if you really feel the need for the new machine then go for it.

We all can and do make mistakes, even after polishing for 34 years but we try to minimize those days 😂
As you get experienced you learn where you can go, and how you need to hold the machine for different edges or directions, especially transisioning lines . When your new, you don't know where your WHOLE pad is, as much so tape is more important than ever.
I don't have a spray polish, I have a regular polish. So in which way should I apply polish on the pad?
Per the manufactures instructions.
Love the content! You guys rock!💯
Thank you
Fantastic tutorial thank you for sharing this with us
Glad you liked it
Great info!
Glad it was helpful!
lol i know nothing about detailing a car.... yet i must have yelled 22 times "keep it flat!!!!" lmao
lol
Hi Yvan, I'm a beginner and very curious about the function that a detailing light can switch the CCT and have much higher CRI, how is that help to polishing a car and in what situation should we use different CCT?
Colour temperature helps when doing different paints . I prefer lower temperatures on lighter colours.
Does hydro lite fill in some light scratches to make the paint flat again
No
@@diydetailofficial could i stack hydro lite with diy 5 for extra gloss?
@@diydetailofficial if you spray some clear coat on deep scratches then polish them
No
@Yvan, what size polisher do you prefer more and why? I have about 30yr old Porter Cable 6” DA now, but would like to move to a M18. I was going to go with the 15mm, but a couple of people are telling to move up to the 21mm. Thanks in advance for your invite and thoughts
The 21 is definitely the better machine. I like 6 inch pads.
awesome job. Very interesting. thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi ! Great video Yvan 👍🏻
Q: how do you polish under the door handel whitout a 1 inche polish machine ?? Thx u
By hand.
love to see the truck content
We like them too.
Great video!! Yvan has the perfect voice and personality for an instructor. Calming. On a side note: What brush did you use to apply the tire dressing? ...Nevermind, I found the video about your tire dressing and the brush. :)
Thank you!
When removing polish with a damp towel, is that with rinseless solution?
Yes
Very simphatic young lady, if she can handle the rotary with a smile, I think we all should at least try it ...
Agreed
What speed do you use to cut and also for polish? Thanjs
The lowest speed your rotary will go, the difference between cutting and polishing is the pad.
Great video❤ she was very brave. Well done
Thank you, the rotary is nacho average tool.
FLEX XCE 8 force rotation. And my PXE 80. 2 of my favorites.
Great tools
I want to remove the coating my car have now, I put 2y coating I can use the same product for that an what polisher machine you will recommend?
The Gold Standard Polishing System yellow pad.
The pad must have 100 % conekting with the surfe all time under the work
As much as possible
Hi, I bout a car that it’s new, I know we should descontaminate, clay, polish a sealed .my question is what polisher brand do you recommend for a begginer?
Thanks you for your vids
The brand isn’t important, get one that has good service support locally.
Thank you.
@@diydetailofficial you're welcome!
At the 25-minute point and discovery of the scratches below the drivers mirror. Could you have done the 5-5-5 process with that orbital sander to remove them?
Yes, we could have.
Do you recommend a 5" or 6" backing plate for the rotary?
I prefer a 6 inch, but it’s personal preference, both work well.
Hello what is the Milwaukee tool model you are using here and what orbit does it have, looks very big like 21mm
Yes it’s their 21mm 18v DA
Is it safe to say to just use a polish on micro scratches and no compounds? I plan on keeping my vehicle a long time and don't think compounds are a wise decision. I recently bought a 2021 Ford Expedition Black and it has some micro scratches. You almost can not see them unless you look closely.
Correct, compounding is like using a sledgehammer to drive a finishing nail.
Thank you so much and great video too@@diydetailofficial
@rahouston thank you
Where do you get that pad cleaning bucket at?
Restaurant supply
The missing info for me is I want to know how long do we work on the section per one spray of compound. How do we know when to stop? I have a DA brand new but I've never used it, now I'm searching for the rotary one, although I might try to use the Ryobi sander instead 🤭
3-4 passes
Sir
When I polish the rotary machine with hard foam to my detona grey car. Polish marks will always be there. I use wax polish on my car. I am from India
For the rotary you need a soft waffle pad
@@diydetailofficial thanks sir. My car is like my family member, like my son. So I do polish at home. I have practical knowledge but I am not a degree holder or a professional. But my family members treat my car as a vehicle. You know women are women.
Im using an 800 rpm polisher, and I am having an extremely difficult time to keep the pad flat with the techniques shown in this video. Do i need a 600 rpm polisher? Thank you very much.
What pads and polishes do you use.
Im practicing with ccs pad and tw one and done. I think the issue might be that I don't have enough lubrication

@@diydetailofficial Thanks guys!!
@tilenpodobnik641 thank you for the questions
I generally find people who have less to say learn more.
