What a beauty. I never understood why the styling of the boat tail Riv was considered controversial. To me it was one of those last shining stars before the darkness of the Malaise Era

My best friend in High School got a brand new '73 Riv from his parents. Meanwhile I was pedaling around in a rusty '65 4 door Chevy Malibu with 3 on the tree. Naturally when we went any place together it was in that head turning Riv. Thanks for another great car story.

Absolutely stunning Lou! When I was young, I didn’t like the boat tail Rivs - now I love them. I was way to conservative back then. Thanks for memorializing this classic for us Lou.
Gorgeous car. The Rivs from the 60s and early 70s were all about elegant style, but the 3rd gen (1971-73) were like nothing else on the road. A true rolling piece of art! I had to chuckle when the owner Len mentioned that the GS was a feature package that included power steering and so forth......hard to believe that one could could actually order a personal luxury coupe that was only available with a big block V8 without power assisted steering.
All these Rivieras came standard with power steering and brakes. The GS option was a handling package with QUICKER steering, a posi, higher numerical rear gears, and stiffer springs. This owner does not know much about his own car. The Stage I option was a higher output engine with larger valves and hotter cam.
@@MostlyBuicks Thanks, that makes more sense. That said, I believe that many "base model" full size cars of that era could be purchased as "strippers", with 6 cylinder engines, manual transmissions, and no power assists.
@@martinliehs2513 The last year for LeSabres or Wildcats to come with manual transmissions was 1970. Riviera and Electra NEVER had manual transmissions. And no full sized Buick had 6 cylinder engines until the late 70s when Buick reacquired the V6 from American Motors. Don't confuse what Chevy did with Buick.
Beautiful, just beautiful condition! One of my best friends parents, growing up, purchased the only one ever seen in our hometown, 1973. A GS as well, all options, in the lighter shade of green with the white half vinyl top and white leather interior. I got to ride in it often to travel to the Outer Banks NC for the weekend (from SE VA) when I was invited to stay in their summer Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer, just steps across the road from the beach/ocean. Great times back then! I was around so many classics when they were new, thanks to my own father, family members and parents of best friends!

I saw this car at The World of wheels in Rosemont,it’s as beautiful in person as it is on film. The only problem I had with it was that it was displayed with the truck lid open, which really screwed up the lines of the car. People want to see boat back’s with the boat back down.

Beautiful at EVERY angle! You did a GREAT job of filming. I was surprised by the fakeness of the wood tone on the dash. I thought with these looks it should have been better. Brushed Aluminum would have been great..at least on the GS. This wood grain plastic cheapens the interior. Love the idle sound and the engine rev. My poor little Focus should be ashamed of itself for the way it sounds at idle! HA HA.
Good call on the brushed aluminum for the instrument panel! The 1971 and 1972 boat tail Riv's had an engine turned metal applique and a "twin cove" style i.p. which kind of emphasized the "boat tail" centerline of the car in the interior. In 1973 they went to the same i.p. as the rest of the large Buicks.

Hi Jaime, I can see why you'd think the back of this one looks like the 1963 Corvette Coupe. Thanks for viewing and sharing the details you notice, Lou
I too fell in love with the Riviera when introduced in the fall of 1970. I was 14 at the time. I even wrote a fan letter to Buick. I did end up owning a 1971 Gran Sport in 1976. Unfortunately, here in Wisconsin they did not age well and it was already beginning to rust.
Great car Lou.....it's a shame I know where one of those rare 73 GS Riviera s went. Back around 1977 a friend young like myself owned one but didn't understand the low number production and I fell in love as we all could do. Needless to say he was very hard on it because of the 455 and it wasn't long before it was wrecked and scrapped. It broke my heart knowing that Frost White GS was punished for doing nothing wrong.
Hi Maris, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great car" :-) Sorry to read the end result of the White GS, and I think we've all done things we regret later, Lou
The 1974 Riviera was a huge mistake by GM. Front end from Bill Mitchell's 1973 Riviera mated to the body of a 1974 Buick LeSabre. Awful design decision.
This design was echoed in the design of Bill Mitchell and Jack Humbert's designs of the 2nd Gen Camaros and Firebirds of 1970 to 1981, which were also inspired by the legendary 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Very cool! Yeah, a GS 73'! Still my favorite car ever owned is my 73' Buick LeSabre that was 'solar yellow'! A very good running car. Floated like a cloud down the highway, quiet and sleek. The interior of this Riviera is very reminiscent of my LeSabre with the same silky cloth. This is a very comfortable car to sit in and drive!
My dad and I both had the 73 LeSabre the only problem with those models was where the had the distributor. When you would go through a big puddle the cat would get wet in the car would stall
I took my driver's license test in my Dad's '73 LeSabre. The first time I was allowed to drive by myself was right after a sizable snowfall. Picked up my best friend Dave and then did some donuts and powerslides in the big boat. It was a huge car for my 16 year old self. Drove it to and from school with friends....many, many friends....around eight people in a single trip on the way to their homes. Fun memories.
Beautiful Riviera, i owned two 1971 Rivieras back in the day that had grills on the trunk lid. It looks to me the boattail on the 1973 is less pointy than the previous years and the dashboard is not double curved.

These cars were cool. My first car was a 67 Mustang, being 16 I drove it till it started ticking. It was low on oil & my father got killed in an auto accident so I had no one to advise me. Thinking it was going to blow I went on to trade it off & I saw a green 72 Riv & a 72 Grand Prix w/ a400. The Riv I loved but I drove it 15 miles & I could see the gas gage go dn.fast . So I bought the more fuel efficient GP! Lol

Mr. Wolfl! We boat-tail Riviera lovers may be few (we'd have been when they bowed) but Gawd, the '74-76 Riv looked a FrankenBuick fright with its ripped off Cad-mockup trunk.
Oh WOW big bro Lou! What a special car. Just outrageous and adventurous, really. Talk about making a styling statement! That swoopy boattail and those huge creases and swoops down her side and across her hood....I love it. Unapologetically all-American and in your face! Nothing subtle with all that beautiful sculpture. Autumn gold too? Awesome. Us card carrying JV baseball guys from the 80's love to have gold (yellow) stripes on top our tubesocks 🤣LOL-classic! What's your big brotherly opinion, Lou? This big gal gonna have me knocked out😵? In my tubesocked stocking feet, too-THWACK>>>THWACK...my super floppy sneakers fly right off quick and land in Mr. Lenaghan's yard🤪😂😆?! As always, I so appreciate what you do here, Lou. Bringing awesome car loving human stories 'n sunshine in a dark world that needs it. God bless you, big brother! :) JV Johnny ⚾
What a gem!...This vehicle was among the last of the truly beautiful, large cruisers that defined the apogee of American automobiles..I owned a used, 1972 Buick Electra, back in the early 1980s...it also had that awesome 455V8...By 72. those massive engines were being stifled by emerging smog requirements, and the cars lost their extremely powerful acceleration...but what power there was, was still enough to move those bulky masterpieces down the road very well...As for mpg--forget it!...10-13mpg...But gas was still reasonably priced...mu two kids were small then, but safe in that hunky vehicle!
Hi Curbozer Boomer, Happy to read you enjoy this "gem!" :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your car. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Hi Dave, Happy to read you "fell in love" with the Riviera :-) Lou
It wasn’t just Wisconsin, they are notorious for quarter panel rusting, the only design flaw in an otherwise perfect car.
Good looking Riv!!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
@@loucostabile 👍👍
Magnificent classic! Designed by Bill Mitchell, the last of the classic 1963-1973 Buick Rivieras!
The 1974 Riviera was a huge mistake by GM. Front end from Bill Mitchell's 1973 Riviera mated to the body of a 1974 Buick LeSabre. Awful design decision.
Bill Mitchell based this grand 1971-73:Buick boat tail design on his iconic 1963-67 Corvette Sting Ray architecture.
This design was echoed in the design of Bill Mitchell and Jack Humbert's designs of the 2nd Gen Camaros and Firebirds of 1970 to 1981, which were also inspired by the legendary 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Hi Donald, Thank you for sharing you enjoy this "Magnificent classic!" :-) Lou
Hi Old Nick, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
My dad and I both had the 73 LeSabre the only problem with those models was where the had the distributor. When you would go through a big puddle the cat would get wet in the car would stall
Buick had the knack for offering super-comfortable interiors!
@@NofaceCat,
Yeah! That was super handy for setting your points though! Had a little door in the cap for your allen wrench! 😄
Great ride on long drives. The floor shifter automatic too cool.
Good to know.
Beautiful Riviera, i owned two 1971 Rivieras back in the day that had grills on the trunk lid. It looks to me the boattail on the 1973 is less pointy than the previous years and the dashboard is not double curved.

Cool car, the back end reminds me of the Corvettes from the 60s. My Gpa actually had a 71-72 Boattail back then. Great video

they reminded me of a jumbo corvette, i had two 1971 rivieras
A nifty old ride, they were such cool cars. An iconic design of 70's styling, a total classic 👌

💕👍 what a beautiful monster 😁
Nice :-)
Brings back a lot of memories…. I had a 73 Riviera GS Stage 1 from 1975 to 1981. Mine had bucket seats and console in black. Great car except for the gas mileage.

nice showroom shape car. lou knows where the good cars are.
Hi chris l, Happy to read you enjoy the condition of this car :-) Lou
I like that the owner took the trouble to get the proper cloth material to redo the interior rather than buying an all vinyl kit.

Lol
Hi Richard, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your GP purchase :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Love the boat tail
Nice :-)
You are a genius young man.
Thank you for sharing.
Dream come true

The boat Tail Riviera was the last car GM made that was completely different than the previous years model and looked like a concept car.

That time the Riv....was the dream of youth....
Hi Iraq Kingdom, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Electric windows. most comfortable ride. No eating in the car.
Thanks for viewing and sharing.
Mr. Wolfl! We boat-tail Riviera lovers may be few (we'd have been when they bowed) but Gawd, the '74-76 Riv looked a FrankenBuick fright with its ripped off Cad-mockup trunk.
Hi Arne, Happy to read you're a "boat-tail Riviera lover" :-) Lou
Hi JV Johnny, Happy to start out with a "Oh WOW". Happy to read those sneakers landed next door :-) Blessings received. God bless you. Lou
Very slick, many thumbs up, thanks,
HI Steve, Happy to receive "many thumbs up" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Plus, the feeling was if you can afford the car, you can afford the gas.
That was an impressive car. That was a big old boat.

Great car and cool owner.
Win / Win
Always liked the boat tail Rivieras.
Nice :-)
Neighbor had a daby blue one back in the 1970s... a neat car.
We had one and loved it and cried when dad traded in for a mercury marquis.
Hi Tru Justice, Happy to read your family had one :-) Sad to read he traded it for a car you did not like :-( Lou
A neighbor back then had one of these new, they also had 2nd car which was a 70' Roadrunner.

Looking at the side molding strip, that goes the length of the car, it resembles the 1953 Riviera 50th Anniversary edition.
Good observation.
I had one just like it.Same color with white interior.

I believe all Buick’s since 1950 had that swish design on the side by swish I mean look at the chrome trim.
Hi Love Dilbert, Thank you for sharing what you notice, Lou
