  • Drivers, don’t think it can’t happen to you. Most likely you will break down at some point while you are doing gig work including, DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub, Instacart, Ship, Walmart Spark, Uber, Lyft, Roadie, Curial, Currie, or Rover. There are a lot of gig apps out there right!?!
    In this video:
I will give insight into how to prepare for a breakdown.
Next I’ll give examples from least to worst on breaking down.
Finally, I will offer some tips on how to never be shocked by these situations.
Please share a time that you broke down and how you were able to get back on the road in the comments below.
Thank you and stay safe out there!
    Russ

The battery in my Prius lasted 10 years. Hybrids use the 12v battery a lot less than normal ICE vehicles. The jumper boxes are great! There are even some with super capacitors in them that don't require charging and get power from your "dead" battery.

That is a perfect gig work car! Reliable and low maintenance. That is good to hear about the jumper boxes too.

I also follow Daryl Delivers channel. He is in my general area. He has a Tesla and shows how reliable it is with no maintenance. I am looking to get a Camry hybrid next or a Tesla model 3 maybe. It is inspiring!

I used to avoid filling my gas tank up. It would inevitably break down soon after :)......
These were the days of the $500 vehicle though.....

Ha! Now we only have $5000 vehicles due to inflation. Russ

I’ve got a Pontiac vibe with 2 gallons of coolant, extra oil two jacks, some stands a mini tool kit; some run flat tire goo; tire patches; an air compressor; a bunch of fuzes
Two jumpstart packs, road flairs and some extra goodies.
Breaking down was a part of life; there were times where I would make it to work but my car broke down a half mile from where I need to be.
I have extra spark plugs coils and a thermostat with a few o2 sensors.
Both camshaft and crankshaft positions sensors are dust at a as bout the same time; working for Oreillys at the time really helped me out tho.

I still have the same car, but I’ve done a lot of TLC, and she’s started taking good care of me.
All together, I’ve put maybe 400& into a free car so I’m not complaining; most people are completely unprepared and unexpected situation. I’m glad that you’re out here making it easy

I loved when my starter started going out, the first time the card crank it was a little bit spooky 4:39
but I learned about the tap trick, and I got another six months out of that starter, believer or not

Well put! Yes it is possible to take many steps to make sure you are ready. It sounds like you are a very resilient individual! Good job!!!👍🏻. It is comforting knowing you are prepared and can help yourself. Thank you! Russ

As for the starter I had heard of that too. The tow truck driver tried that when my starter died while on a delivery. Thankfully I was able to get it replaced there same day. I sure don’t like being stranded and at someone else’s mercy. Russ

@@TheRussRyde truly agree; those situations where it’s get tuff and smart or die, metaphorically speaking get stressful especially if you just don’t know what is wrong.
I’m a decent mechanic as a byproduct of my breakdowns, I will say I did know what I was getting into MOSTLY; I’ve got a 2004 Pontiac vibe that is for all intents and purposes bulletproof.
She’s a simple vehicle when comparing it to modern cars and as I take care of her, she takes care of me.
That said I keep half the gear I do, to help those who are stuck, from serpentine belts on the side of the road to jumps it’s all fun

I think AAA is a worthwhile investment. And, its tax deductible too!!!!!
Most of the time you cannot really even take the nuts off the wheels to change a tire, because the mechanic used a mechanical wrench to tighten the nuts!!!!!

I agree Mateo, thank you for pointing that out. That would be miserable to think you can loosen a nut but then find out you can’t. Russ
