- If you are planning on going to China and thinking of driving there this video will give you an idea of what to expect.
This video was shot in China in a town in Cangnan county. November 2013.
it is a small, by Chinese standards, town, so there is no traffic lights on intersections like this one.
Every time i go to china i am in the state of shock and owe from the way they drive!
You can see that no-one backed down, they only move forward no matter how dense the gridlock is. Even a police car was calmly pushing through the gridlock. They enter the intersection full speed and proceed until about an inch from crushing into another car or biker.
In any american city driving like that would cause a lot of road rage, but for Chinese this is a routine affair, nothing special and nothing to worry about...
I never saw anyone getting upset, yelling or flipping an equivalent of a "bird".

To make it easier, they should just wire the horn so it goes off every time you hit the gas.
+Bill Bingham
Great idea!
i think you should patent that
:)
+Bill Bingham no such thing as a patent in china.
To make it easier, they should just wire the horn so it goes off every time you hit the brake.
Every time they hit the brakes.
I cant understand why , just a traffic light will do
You just have to be a Chinese to drive in China. Srsly, I went to China to visit my relatives and almost have a heart attack driving in there, and my relatives was like: "just be more Chinese, and then you will know how to drive". I tried, and it worked! The problem is as soon as I got back to Toronto, I got 3 tickets in one month.
Now, I am all back to my "Canadian Mode". I guess it will take another 3 month of driving in China to get back to "Chinese Mode".
I recommend spending some time in Quebec before going and after coming back, as a sort of warm-up/cool down to driving like a complete nutcase.
+jimmyjamesWang You got to drive like a pirck to get into your "chinese mode" of driving.
Ryley Hayes 😂
Hahaha 😂 this comment is so funny
People with new driver's licenses would freak out and piss their pants.
Haha Yes I agree! Very stressful for beginners
Some even shit themselves!
ive been driving for a while and driving in that traffic would give me anxiety
This should be turned into a 24/7 livestream
I agree! Would be entertaining to watch lol

I'm just wondering if this is Vietnam because they're famous for not having traffic lights.
@@finlaystech 😀👌
This would bring great cortisol for those who have job interviews to prepare for or speeches in front of large crowds.
I noticed some of them are actually using their blinkers and couldn't help but laugh lol
Zach Pilgram: Their system certainly seems very bizarre compared to Western countries that’s for sure. But I have to say it gets people through the intersection and there were no accidents, so the little things they do may seem extreme, funny, and fucked up in our eyes but for them it obviously works and that’s probably all that matters!

Thank god for traffic lights.
The rule of thumb seems to be, if there is an opening, get in it! No matter how bad the gridlock is.
Yes. Chinese justify this by saying "there are so many people, if you don't take your turn, noone will ever give it to you". This is why Chinese suck at queuing too. They also have this great rule where.. who-ever hits the OTHER with the front of their car is at fault, so cutting people off is totally okay.
@@puppy6646 But they fail to realize that that exact behavior is the _cause_ of the gridlock.
that's what she said
@@SFVYachtClub I don't think they fail to realize it; it's just that you can't make *other* people give way when there's no signal, priority rules, or roundabout.
@@TaiViinikka You illustrate the difference between the stock of people who are always collapsing down to the lowest possible denominator, and the races that have the maturity to look at themselves and collectively say "let's not."
The lower races can't even fathom this happening, while the civilized live it every moment of every day.
Everyone has the right away in China.
Right OF way
XD
The horns help move traffic along, obviously.

Yes, I’ve heard that it is a 3,000 yuan fine!
Good times! I used to ride an electric trike in Linyi, Shandong Province. This really takes me back. Awesome. It's not that hard. First, you have to have 360-degree vision. And then you must always mind the hierarchy. Buses first, then trucks, then black cars, then Mercedes and BMWs, then all the other cars, then bikes, then hand-pushed or -pulled carts and pedestrians. Piece of cake.
lol. well said.
you got it!
I remember that trike!
Rachel Barr hahahahaha. Accurate indeed
Black cars? Even if it's a beater?
I worked in this town for a year. Traffic is nuts. My girlfriend is a Chinese. Kept saying to her I can't understand how this works. In the bus you're like: oh shit he's going to hit that car, and then the driver misses by an inch at full speed while nobody is even looking at the bus....
Also honking the horn doesn't mean the same thing as in the west. In China it means: "Hey here I am, keep me in mind."
Good comments, that's what China's road system functions.
Gods... I hope you're not white..
We already don't breed enough as it is, so interracial breeding just makes our situation even worse...
Although China is a developed country, this looks like stanard 2d/3d world driving.
James Kaplan You got it wrong tho, because China is a developing country. There was a new bus centre under construction in this town named Ningnan a few years ago, so there was no traffic light during that time period. After the bus centre was rebuilt around the Spring Festival, the traffic lights came back and the road became broader. Ningnan is still developing but it is much better now.
I was a but confused as to why China drivers just periodically honk the horn for no apparent reason...guess it's not a "wtf are you doing" there it's a "I'm right next to you"
Not a single accident or fender bender. Very tolerant, even when they were temporarily gridlocked, no got out and started screaming at the other drivers.
Colin Christie we don't do that in china, because we don't want to piss off a random 'gov official' or 'rich people who have power' that sit in the car. They have 100 ways to revenge us and our family. They basically own police.
Colin Christie Yikes...........Don’t know about that way out reply above! Doubt that in today’s China. That seems like an answer that would be accurate in rare, extreme cases in old China. What you were saying is very true. People aren’t out to take out all their aggression on the streets, but they aren’t out to take a leisurely Sunday drive either! They just want to get where they’re going as efficiently and rapidly as possible. But you do occasionally get people saying rude things to each other about their driving habits, but nothing that comes close to road rage in other countries. People respect the idea that others also need to get where they are going as well.
There is a LOT of horn honking, but as you already know it’s not the same meaning as in Western countries. People “drive” with their horn, but it’s to let other drivers know that they are right next to them so the other driver does not make a rapidly lane change or other fast movement that would cause an accident. Drivers aren’t upset by having the person near them repeatedly honking their horn or driving very close to them either. 🚗🚙🚛🎺🎺🎺
@@puppy6646 Calm yourself, it's a compliment.
I think also if you got out to exact road rage at every occasion a driver cuts you up it would takes days to get where you going in China. Plus I guess since it's happening to everyone and you're probably doing it too it must feel like less of a personal attack and because of that is easier to get over. Guess in most countries where people drive better when you do get cut up you feel it's very personal and gets you angrier.
Traffic rules violation? No rules - no violation:)
this should be renamed "could you sleep in china?"
Got my license (I'm American) and drove there in the summer of 2011 around Shanghai, from Shanghai to Qingdao and to a village in Shandong province. Wasn't too bad, nothing like what you see here in this video, but one time I got lost looking for a shortcut to a village and there were no signs whatsoever. None. It was complete guesswork, looking at where the sun was in the sky and going from there. Finally found the way back to the main road and found the village, but had no idea how I did it...
Thank you for your objective answer (I'm Chinese).
Sounds a bit like Wales.
Are you serious?????
Where the fuck are the stop signs or the red lights??
They forgot to copy those.
If there is a stop sign, no one obeys it.
Yo Momma This video was in a town. China only has traffic lights in the city. There's no stop sign in the entire country. Because no one obey signs. Some people don't even obey traffic lights.
Yo Momma ikr
it's in a developing country, so road infrastructure is often poor
They indeed need some traffic lights there.
Just bought a brand new Samsung 55" 4K UHD flatscreen and this is the first video I watched with it! Now I feel like I'm looking out the window of a chinese apartment!
Yes we indian can drive there.... 😂🤣
Yea that traffic jam is nothing idk why they r stuck there we could have drove past 15 times
This intersection works, but can you imagine living in an apartment in the city ( honk, honk, honk, honk, honk ) day and night. Dear Lord.
Yeah that would definitely be a tough spot to live in for sure!
Those are some scarily competent drivers; the cars are so close and not one single bump... damn.
Eh, this is why I'm a proponent of right-of-way signs, where some stretches of road have priority. It neatly solves the question of "who the hell has the right of way now?". Or traffic lights. They do that too...
yeah youre deaf if you didn't hear at LEAST 3/4 thuds...
who the fuck needs traffic lights?
Their is no traffic police to guide them
+Alex Truong you don't need traffic police if there are stop lights.
gold aria stop lights are useless mostly traffic police are more useful
Haha!!
Seems like less crashes with this system too. But it'll never work in Europe and the West with some of the citizens the holier than thou attitude towards their townsfolk.
I can’t believe how much anxiety watching some of this video was giving me.
One street light solves this.
+Average Joe Solves what? there are no jams or accidents, and drivers don't seem to be aggresive. What exactly needs to be sovled?
+tektel are you kidding me? this intersection looks like absolute chaos. just because this one video showed no accidents, doesn't mean there aren't tons that have happened in the past
Aurora Borealis
I'm not kidding you. Maybe you are right about the accident rate, maybe you are not. Who knows.
A simple google/wiki search knows. 100+ fatality per 100,000 vehicles a year (China) vs 5 fatality per 100,000 vehicles a year (United Kingdom).
China has laws that incentivize killing pedestrians. Culpable drivers have to pay medical bills for people they hit for the rest of the victim's life, or pay a one time lump sum payment to the family if the person they ran over dies. So, there's enough cases of people hitting someone, and backing up and running them over again. I'm not sure to what degree this perverse law plays a role in their MVA death rates, but I think we can safely assume it does.
I'm just sitting here waiting for a car accident to happen in this video.
I still remember being in a traffic in China years ago, and it was just as chaos as this. There were even people driving against the flow! But now that scene is no more, any slight mistake on the road can get your license suspended
i think i understand the honking now. people ohnk to let the cars around them know okay i'm going now lmao
2:03 when you step on a lego
haha!
Omg this is complete chaos!
I've been to China so often I've lost track of how many times I've been there. What's totally amazing is given the craziness of the traffic, I've seen very few accidents.
nah....at least 3 per day in Shenzhen tho~
hi,
do you have a longer video of signalized intersection?
can you please upload? I need it for some trial analysis before going to the actual site.
what is amazing is there is no accident happening, and the the traffic is still running smoothly.
All that honking... In some parts of the US where we have very strict driving laws; just using your horn is considered rude and aggressive and can get you shot and killed/hurt. All this honking is insane.
Late reply, but in Asia, honking = "I am here, driving here, look out!"
Everybody seems extremely unhurried and devoid of aggression. Try a similar intersection in New Delhi to know what I mean
Rakesh Monga That is true. everyone accepts this as normal. No aggression. On single lane roads they often "Play chicken",i.e. They could stand nose to nose for about 5 minutes waiting for the other guy to back out. eventually they do not back out, but manage to somehow squeeze by. larger cities are not as crazy though.
Yes, I understand what you mean!!! Very accurate.
Does an intersection in china fit in one of your vocal booths?
IMpossible sleep or have a quiet life.
Currently driving on China highways, and as a piece of advice: there are no rules, expect the unexpected and practice defensive driving. Said the latter, you can stick to your civilized rules, drive at the correct speed, and keep in your track and they won't bother you ( of course after they overtake you, they will get into your path....perhaps trying to demonstrate dominance or the real way they learn how to drive in Mario carts)
This flow is so peaceful. soothes the spirit.
Im from USA where honking is a last resort because it is rude. This was super cringeworthy.
YES! It was! lol We are based out of Maryland so this was certainly a sight for us to witness. Thank goodness that I70 is never this crazy haha
you definitely don't live in california then lol
After reading the comments below, I think some guys are making a deliberate misinterpretation out of context.
There was a new bus centre under construction in this town named Ningnan a few years ago, so there was no traffic light during that time period. After the bus centre was rebuilt around the Spring Festival, the traffic lights came back and the road became broader. Ningnan is still developing but it is much better now.
They dont even have divider lines between the two-way lanes.
i am having anxiety watching this. My chest is pounding.
Respect for the people in this for not being constantly terrified. Wow
I don't really know how larger intersections in China work. I would assume they would have traffic lights. The only other viable option is that larger intersections they just act like traffic in Meskel Square, Addis Ababa. Seriously, if you thought this video had some risky driving techniques, you should check out the videos of Meskel Square.
As a class b driver yes I can. It’s not hectic or chaotic, it’s just a lot of car going at snail pace.
Where are all the 2 wheelers? A surprisingly low number of them in the chaotic mix you filmed compared to the Chinese cities I've been in. Otherwise, not anomalous! And the comment below about the non-aggression is spot on. I would add, If this were London or NY there would be fistfights (at the least) at every intersection!
Richmond, BC is really affected by those blind Chinese drivers
Which side of the road you drive on is how you feel that day.
It really looks very relaxed and „uncramped“.
There are no seriously conflicts to see … they communicate well … and these without ‚traffic- lights‘.
this is just a busy cross intersection without proper signal lights, installed traffic lighting unit will resolve this issue
Imagine your home is next to that intersection.
someone put some traffic lights pleeaase! haha
Why do u like to choose a street without traffic light?
It looks like driving in New York City on a good day.
were did they get there drivver 's license?
My mom went to China, she said that the city bus she was riding around eventually just pushed its way into oncoming traffic and vehicles would just go around the bus lol. Nuts.
Not only can I drive in China but I do regularly now. I have a Chinese drivers license (took me 5 tries). My wife is Chinese and now when we go there we rent a car just like here. The traffic looks crazy but I actually prefer to drive there over here because we waste sooooo much time at stop lights and stop signs here (wasting fuel I might add). As you see in the video an uncontrolled intersection is just entered slowly and you wiggle your way through. It actually works very well and no one gets angry (for the most part the horn honking is just the way they announce their position).
actually,it looks like its flowing fairly well...
Have they ever thought of putting a traffic lights at this intersection?
Does this intersection still exist or has it improved
I not really know for sure, but I can check. I doubt that it had improved. This town is a relatively small and things like that are "normal ".
Living in China going on 20 years now, this is exactly how it is on a good day. Yes, I drive there.
I like how most cars tend to drive safely around pedestrians, even though they're stuck in crowded traffic areas
where are the light signals?why they don't have them
third world country and the rule of stronger. that's the reason why they are always third world.
I didnt even think it was possible to be both an offense and defense driver at the same time
There is no jam. It's really amazing! I have the feeling that the movement is not chaotic but can't understand what they are doing to prevent accidents and jams...
Accidents won’t happen because everyone drives slowly especially at the crossing.
a simple 4-way stop sign would do wonders. Obviously they can't do lights because of the congestion, but knowing what do at a 4-way would help a lot.
Aquila Latin no such a thing.
Вьетнам??
Traffic intersections in Cities Skylines with no signals be like:
Yup😂
What does 8+ minutes of footage of an intersection in china have to do with vocal booth to go?
Hi Ryan, good question. We recently visited China and was amazed at this traffic and noise from the city streets. We've had requests for soundproofing curtains and other products to block this exact type of noise from hotels and apartments. Just research. Thanks for asking.
Where is the traffic light? I thought China is develop?
The amount of anxiety that this video gave me.
Battle Royale - The Intersection
Was that an accident but they just kept going at 0:36 Left upper corner, white pickup truck and the tiny car.
No. No accidents. Just a regulsr daily commute.
VocalBoothToGo nothing regular about that 🤣
Where are the traffic lights?
Looks fairly efficient to me.
Unique and beautiful road system. Chaos at its best and it works. No fatalities and crashes.
This is where we need to send new student drivers for training.
They have so much people in China, yet they can't afford ONE guy in the middle of the intersection directing the traffic.
What I got from this is the fact that everyone thinks they have the right-of-way when there is no traffic lights at the intersections...
I had no idea China had this many smart cars.
I lived in Mumbai for 2 years, this looks like a breeze.
Now just add a couple dozen motorcycles and people navigating their way in between the cars and you pretty much have your average intersection in India.
I could drive there, but it's quite stressful hahaha
It’s like that one game where you have to take out the parked car lol
I have to admit, my mind is blown. Especially around 5:00 i assumed they had done it and simply got everything locked up but behold, they got it figured out again. This is crazy and yet ... it works.
Note the fact that NO accidents occurred in this video. That speaks for itself
Oh my god, cannot imagine how people drive without traffic lights!
Come to india
Looks crazy but no wrecks.
This would give me so much anxiety
They really havent figured out traffic lights yet??
There's no structure or direction. Everyone's just going when the feel like it.
At 1:47 you start to hear the bus that comes into the bottom of the shot, leaning on his horn well before he reaches the intersection.
Ee to humrey up k shehrva mein rojaii hota hai
before you judge china. you should see roma italy or naples italy
Actually, I've been driving in China for 8 years and the only accidents I've had is 3 times, e-bikes/scooters have hit me from behind at low speed (the Chinese LOVE to check their phones in traffic). It's not too bad here, sure, there are LOTS of complete morons but people rarely gun it so you usually have time to stop or avoid when you see stupid shaite. And also, the main problem here is clearly the local government should have put up a red/green intersection.
Haha thanks for sharing Nicolas! What an interesting experience!
Seems fairly straightforward to me.
Yes I can drive in china v well, only the road signs will cause some initial problems
i loled at 2:00 when that big bus came through xD
In Germany it's against the law to Hong in the City; noise pollution. Only for exceptional reasons and emergencies. You almost never hear cars Honk. Imaging working near that intersection as a waiter, asking customers to repeat what they just said.
eng Ak. In big Chinese cities like Beijing or Shanghai, honking is actually prohibited. But in smaller cities and towns, no one cares and you can hear honking all day long.
This is how ants works too... Mutual understanding
Mutual understanding is so important!
Good one though
2 words. Traffic Light.
It seems to work just fine
