I just thought about how old all my grandfather's planes passed to me from my dad really are. They are treasures. I have many wooden body ones of his as well. I am sure you would love them. This sure took me back to grandads shop. I care for them as they are solid gold. It is good to see "NO GLOVES" at the drill press or anywhere else in your shop.Nasty results if a person gets caught up. Many folks don't know that plain paper can put a killer finish on most metals and woods. This vid is full of all kinds of little tips. Ending up with look at that beauty make wonderful coiled chips. Better than the day it came home 119 yrs ago. I really enjoyed this young fella. It can now go for another 100 +.
Andy Rawls I need to make a Texas trip happen this year. Between you, April, and Evan & Katelyn, I could have a pretty awesome trip. How far are you from Austin?
I’m 2 hours from Austin and only 45 minutes from April! It’s actually kinda ridiculous that I haven’t made it over to April’s new place yet, I finally met her a few weekends ago, super nice and smart.
Andy Rawls yea, she’s awesome! Alright, I need to make this happen. I’ll keep you posted! It’ll be awhile considering my new kid and all, but maybe fall. Plus, gotta avoid that Texas heat, hah.
Hey Andy - Its great to see someone still using the old Stanley planes with such great results. Just shows you don't have to spend a fortune on the new modern very expensive planes to get good a good finish. I love my old Stanley & Record planes and see no need to replace them. My sons will still be using them long after I'm gone. Great work - Regards Dave
Nice video. I didn't see anything wrong with the wood handles. I love original finish and paint, even with imperfections and some wear. Less is more for the value, to the purest and the collectors. You got to love the patin and wear due to other woodworkers before us. Love the video, the time you gave us making it...and nice shop Brother!! Thank you again!!
Hey Andy - Great no nonsense restoration and it cuts beautifully. You remind me of a young Paul Sellers in the way you work - keep up the good work and stay safe - Regards Dave .
Next time when you flatten the sole, put the blade assembly back in, tightened, (frog, blade, breaker and cap) -with the blade retracted slightly. That pressure can bend the sole slightly.
Paul Sellers actually discredited that a couple years ago. It doesn't mean people that do it should stop, but those that don't do it currently, don't have to start. 😊
Very cool Andy, I was addicted to buying old planes for a year or so I bouht lke 15 planes for no more than $10ea, I have 5 of those really old #4s three of them are awesome like yours after I refurbished them.
Although I only use 3 of my planes mostly (my no 40 scrub, a Shelton smoother no4 sized, and a Miller falls jointer no7 sized) I love hunting them down and restoring any I can find. I’ve begun to enjoy using the Miller falls over my Stanley’s lately. They just seem a bit heavier. I’ve yet to find a plane that wasn’t just completely covered in rust but I live the challenge
no no its not before truing the sole the plane should be assembled the body can twist slightly throwing all the "truing" out causing you to chase straightness when jointing boards or anything else where true flat is required
Very nice work. Once again. I found a very old No 4 plane in the old house I am restoring. I will restore the plane too. Needs a lot of TLC but it is solid.
Andy, You might try "Rust Converter - Ultra" (Amazon). Eliminates rust, sand blasting, grinding or sanding. Stops future rusting. Applies with brush or spray. Leaves treated parts ready for painting. There are a number of these rust converters on the market but they work basically the same.
I agree with your choice of planes. My favorite is a Stanley 4 1/2 and I agree with you as well regarding Miller Falls. Well made and heavy. I do like the new premium planes but they don’t fit my budget. I also like Hock blades, they are better but @ $50 I only have one.
Nice job Andy! I have a Stanley 605 that belonged to my Grand Dad that I use all the time. At some point, the plane body got painted a tan color. I need to strip all the paint off of it and maybe get a Hock blade for it. I tried sandblasting it and the paint must be so old, it barely came off. So I guess I'll be trying out some paint stripper.
Love your work buddy. I would love to visit your shop some day. I'm just down the street in schertz. If you ever do a shop tour let me know. Keep up the good work!!!!!!
does it make a difference if you flatten the sole disassembled? I would assume that you would need to flatten it complete put together. The tense the screws and cap iron could pull it out of flat.
Awesome video as always. I have a stanley bailey that looks just like that that I need to restore. The only thing stopping me is that I need to brake down and spend the money on a new blade. Mine is cracked.
Andy, is there any reason you use the butcher block oil and not regular mineral oil? I have used both and the only difference I can see is the price. Always looking for better way.
Sole flattening should be done With the frog attached and cutting iron tensioned. Cast iron bends under the forces of the screws. The sole will only be true if you do it that way.
A vintage cast iron lapping plate. Fine abrasives in the lapping fluid actually bed into the cast iron, so the iron doesn't wear away. Slurry with the swarf falls into the slots. Machinist's granite surface plates are actually flattened with bigger versions of these. I'd love to have one of these old beauties... Clyde
как же много там частей... неужто нельзя было придумать конструкцию чуть проще. много работы проделано - приятно будет таким инструментом работать! "хорошо когда руки из правильного места" !
I like that no one talks and there’s no music. Lovely job.

Love watching your videos, Andy. So soothing and always inspires me to become a better hand tool woodworker.
Thanks man!! Wish you were closer so we could get together and collaborate on a project

You should definitely make it down👍

fat2slow thank you
fat2slow dude. I’ve been watching RUclips for years and never knew that. Thanks for that!
By far the best woodworking channel on RUclips

Putting that little knob in the chuck was straight genius. Thanks for the tip.
Your videos are perfect in every single way. Never change, Andy

Very nicely done, Andy. Always enjoy your videos. I love the low knobs.
I love the old stuff. Just looking at them and you can tell the quality. Well done.
This is so therapeutic. Nicely done
I would LOVE to see more of these restoration videos in the future!!!
Ahhh always a good day when Andy uploads.

@@triune_blades Paul sellers is one of the ones who teaches this. can you give the title or a link to where he says one should not do this/
I have been considering purchasing an older plane and now with your helpful video I might just give it a try. Great video, Thanks
This is a cool yet long process thanks for the effort you put in to all these videos
I've recently restored a Stanley Liberty Bell plane of around the same age, also a 1955 Record No4 smoothing plane. Nice to have and use now & then
that's always a therapeutic undertaking, nicely done and not overdone.
Andy, your videos are so calming to watch - keep up the great work! 👍🏻
the sound a freshly sharp plane makes ... yum
Just the right amount of restoration. Well done!
Yay! You used my suggestion of using captions in your videos! Love it!
Nice Work. I like the captions.
I had no idea what a Stanley hand plane was but I was still entertained from beginning to end lol these videos are awesome! 👍🏼
Beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful beautiful
Beautiful...I have a few old ones myself...I love using them..
A few records and Stanley's too...
Thanks for the video
Perfect timing! I've recently gotten a good number of old planes that are in need of servicing!
Nicely done! Are handles always the worst to sand?
Hand Tool Rescue lol hell yes they are! If it ain’t rosewood I say it’s easier just to make new ones damn near 😝

Looks great, I just received a plane from my grandfather so this is perfect timing on how to get it restored.
Good video Andy! Greetings from Poland! ;)

I love how you respected its age, it’s so easy to over do projects like this.
Very cool man! Makes me want to clean and restore a couple of old ones of my own!
And that is how it's done ladies and gentlemen! Very nice video, thank you. ^5

Another day another nice video
Beauty!
Now to see the bandsaw throwin dust! huuuuu weeeeee
I have a no4 just like this one, what a nice plane.
something very therapeutic about this channel.
Awesome video! Any chance you could show us how you made the tool rest for your grinder, or direct us to plans for it? Much appreciated!
Nice job done. My respect.
I partially restored one of these just the other week. My Dad still owns one of his Grandad's and one of my Mum's Grandad's. Crazy.
Wow! Like Factory Brand New 👍👍

Awesomeness
i have that exact hand plane!
What did you use to strip the handles?
Mooi ding man
You look out of your element here Rawls.. I like the new content. Maybe you should look into restoring old stools and wood chairs??
What stone did you use at 2:32?
very nice
Amazing
Great tutorial. Wich stanley hand plane do you use the most. Or us your favorite one?
Show, Show!!
I like your videos. if u please upload more
1:59 - genius
Awesome video as always. I have a stanley bailey that looks just like that that I need to restore. The only thing stopping me is that I need to brake down and spend the money on a new blade. Mine is cracked.
Andy, where can I order the sharpening stones you use to sharpening your blades, are they oil or water, and what grit are they
Sorry if somebody already asked, but wat grids are your stones?
Can you make a shop tour?
OK, I am totally stealing the idea of drill pressing the flat sides into the sand paper!
Hey Randy! I'm working on one of these myself. Do you think a chip in the base plate (along the blade rest) would ruin teh chance for a restoration?
Andy do you prefer older planes or newer planes? Like from what time period
Finally, a plane video without someone telling the boring story of his life.
Andy, is there any reason you use the butcher block oil and not regular mineral oil? I have used both and the only difference I can see is the price.
Always looking for better way.
Beeyoutifull...Good Job !
Shouldn't the sole be flatten while the whole plane is in tension?
Sole flattening should be done With the frog attached and cutting iron tensioned. Cast iron bends under the forces of the screws. The sole will only be true if you do it that way.
I just restored a Stanley No. 3 Type 7 that looks very similar to that. Is that a No. 3 or No. 4?
Like it so much dude!
Have planers changed much in the last hundred years? If you compare that to a new one are there any differences?
Would you not use a Dremel or similar to clean up inside the shoe a bit more and even re-paint it? I know that's purely cosmetic though..
I have an old type 6 like that.
... Yours is cleaner
Watch with subtitles
Nice
just like my grandpa used to have
cutting board oil for she sharpening stones? interesting, gotta try that!
what is he using to flatten the bottom of the hand plane?
Wyatt Schaefer looks like diamond stone

thank you very much!
What are the 3 best honing stones I should buy first? please advise......I bought 2 old stanley planes and need to get cracking.
Dan Barrett he put links in the description for the stones he’s using.
make a video on how to sharpen a chisel
Looks brandy new
Wow I didn’t even realize what plane I had. I have the exact same plane that’s in pristine condition and I got it from my great grand father
صيانه ممتازة
I'll take two please . . . . . _and a side of fries._
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Check out the Plane Collector on RUclips. He's the master plane restorer. Has done hundreds of them and has a ton of useful info.
