LOL, Story time almost got me! I was like Wow, that's pretty dramatic even for Japanese stories ! The snow was beautiful ! You had quite the snow hat going for a while to! Thanks for sharing the hike looks like you had a fun fun day!
Ahahaha, yeah I was pushing the believability envelope...
Yeah, was a beautiful day! Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolute delight watching this one. I once spent a 6-week school term up in the northern Cascades, in the months of January and February. We stayed in this refurbished copper mining village (turned into a retreat) and we'd go on snowshoeing hikes all the time. I think they received over 300 inches of snow that winter. So this little hike brought me back!
That sounds dreamy! What a great sounding retreat!!
Yep, a Japanese mountain landscape with a heavy coat of snow never disappoints (unless one's out there under-equiped oc). Your camera assistant must be in pretty good shape to keep up with you 😉
Ahahaha, I need a camera assistant! I was just hiking with a friend that I had hold the camera once at the very end for the jump into the snow...
Really nice, its always the best when you get to hike and its snowing
Agreed!
I love snow so much! ❄ ⛄💕
Yes yes yes!
The notes about what the other hikers about reasons for their bear bells was pretty interesting. Clearly people develop a habit and stick to it, and unless they have reason to revisit the rationale, it works well enough. To me, it is just a dinner bell 🙂
Yeah. I actually asked a few others, but didn't record it. Generally, people just seem to leave them on and not think about it. The bell is just attached to their backpack permanently, lol..
Best winter weather there is. Looks fantastic.
It really was a great day! Can't wait to get back. (Visiting family abroad right now.)
nothing like seeing a new GoNorth video in the feed
that looks great i love getting out in the snow for a few hrs
Yeah- so much fun! And thanks!
Danke!
Thank you so much!!
That snow looks so soft, seems like you have a lot of fun in it!
I love love love it!
Wonderful!
So envious of the snow you're getting! I get maybe 2 or 3 good snowfalls each winter so I try to cherish the time I get to spend in the winter wonderland of my nearby forests.
Yeah, there's already been a lot of snow this year here. Several large dumps after I filled this actually... Grateful for that!
Winter wonderland forests are one of my favorite things!
What a fun winter romp! I can imagine that an uphill trudge through deep snow really gets the cardio going, but for this “senior” viewer the simple serenity of a snow scene is reward enough. Oh, and thank you for that wonderful drone footage at the end. Remarkably beautiful countryside!
This entire area is so beautiful.. drone in any direction and it's stunning.
Fun fun fun fun fun, love the vids
Thanks!
Love your walking expeditions, they are of great interest to me. Keep them coming Quinlan, thank you. I hill walk the northwest of England and around Scotland.
Thanks, will do! And fun! Someday I'll get to Scotland to hike!
The snow is amazing! Your snow angel jump made me laugh. I'd totally do that too! I'm glad you enjoy the little silly thing in life too.
I hope I get to visit a place with that much snow someday. I live in the Netherlands, so we'll have a little layer if we're lucky. A couple winters ago we had some decent snow though, but then traffic was chaos. For now I'll just watch your videos. Going to watch some more, fell a little behind watching so gotta catch up.
Love playing in the snow so much! Winter is coming...!
Wow, what a stunning winter scenery my friend. This looks freaking gorgeous! Love it!
Glad you enjoyed it as well!
This video was so much fun to watch, and hiking in all that fluffy snow looked exhilarating! I also got a kick out of watching your hair and eyebrows get frostier and frostier as the video went on! 😂
Ahahaha, glad that you liked it!
Ooh you should totally write a book of “Quinlan’s Definitely Not Made Up 😉 Japanese Folktales”! 😂 That snow is so pretty!! I really want it to snow a lot here but all we’re getting is rain in Portland.
Ahahaha, great idea! That would be a fun project!
Beautiful hike Quinlan! Your passion and talent for story-telling really brings these trails to life.
I attempted Mount Eboshi up here in Aomori Prefecture recently. The deep snow and steep trail was a bit much for me, but I came across a sign talking about the "Legend of the Night Crying Stone". Some legend about hearing a young girl's voice at night. As the story goes, her father was a Ronin who went hunting one day and didn't come back. She now mourns at the rock and her cries can be heard in hours of darkness.
Oooooh, great story! I've heard of Eboshi in Aomori, but haven't been there yet. I always get confused because there's also Mt. Eboshi in Iwate.. or rather on the border with Akita. (It's called Mt. Nyuto from Akita, and Mt. Eboshi from Iwate.)
Thank you for the snowy trek.
Thanks for watching!
I'm moving to Morioka in a couple of months and I cannot wait to explore the gorgeous Iwate countryside. As somebody who grew up above the Swedish arctic circle, I'm definitely curious to see what northern Japanese winters are like.
Thank you for a great video!
Nice!! Hit me up before you arrive! Can introduce you to locals!
@GoNorthJapan definitely will. Moving to Japan has been a life long dream and the fact that I finally get to do it is so exciting.
Always glad to make new friends :)
The snow is gorgeous! I’ve only been to Japan once (norita airport) but hopefully I’ll be back in the future to see the rural north area.
Looks like fun! It was -7°C in Portland last week and then we had freezing rain. All I could think of is moving to Okinawa. But Ice is much less fun than snow.
I guess I'm not as much of a winter person as I thought, too.
Ahahaha, freezing rain is definitely less fun agreed...
It was great seeing you having so much fun in the snow! :) It is so beautiful in the mountains there!
It was a lot of fun... and yeah- love the mountains here!
All this snow on your head, amazing 😆
Ahahaha, it was fun.
the story definitely got me for a sec 😂😂 lovely video!
Ahahaha, all good fun
Firstly, a very Happy New Year to you Quinlan. I’ve been subbed to your channel for a while now and I love your diversity of content that you have and continue to show and long may that continue. I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled the world throughout my life but Japan is a place that I’ve not managed to get to which I hope to one day change. It’s such a beautiful and interesting country and having people such as yourself show it in an amazing way is very inspiring. I wish you all the best for the coming year. Adam from England 🏴
Belated Happy New Year to you too! (Sorry for the late reply, somehow missed this comment.) I'm very happy to hear that you enjoy the videos that I make!
Top layer of snow looked fairly powdery. Hopefully it will be good for building snowmen and forts soon.
Oh yeah- it'll work for all that!
What a lovely hike! I still have yet to go to Northern Japan, let alone Japan in Winter. Hope to take care of that in a year or 2!
Definitely!!
that is so much snow!
Even more now!
Such gorgeous snowy views to put in the eyes and enjoy!! Thanks so much for sharing them. Loving how the snow brings out your playful side too, that's precisely what snow should do to most of us! I enjoyed and was fooled by your original oni folktale which makes me wonder have you ever considered putting together a small book of local folktales/folklore associated with the places you hike which you could sell to people who stay with you or whom you guide or just visitors to the area in general? I'd certainly buy it. Also and please ignore the question if it's too personal or if you've answered it elsewhere, but do you wear thermal/long underpants when hiking the mountains in winter or is it really not necessary?
Yeah, I'm trying to read up more on folktales and such. I hadn't thought of making a print book, though... I wonder.. maybe a coffee table book type thing with big drone photos and stories and maps all mixed in. Also thought of just making a calendar to sell..
Yes- I wear long underwear in the winter. I have Montbell thermals that are meant for hiking in the winter that I always wear.
@@GoNorthJapan Wow I love the idea of a coffee table book, with photos, stories and maps!! You make it and I'll certainly buy it. A calendar would be a great idea too. Thanks for answering my question, much appreciated.
Q dawg back in da snow !
Bark with me ma dawgs
Bark ! Woof ! Bark ! Grrrrrrrrr. Bark bark !
-read in Dmx voice
ahahaha
Love it! This is more my kind of hike! Japan in winter is amazing!
Yeah- not too cold, tons of snow, perfect!
Takk!
Thanks so much! Appreciate it!
lol I luv that tengu story maybe you should start some spooky stories XD I mean that is kinda how it usually starts
also: Lol dawww..you seemed so happy in the snow XD winter is over, I'm just that late watching this. But yes, fun fun fun XD watching you enjoy the snow so much almost makes me want it back (but spring is great too!) Did you ask someone to film you jump into the snow?XD or i guess you didn't go alone. I'm just picturing a confused old japanese hiker filming you topple into the snow and speaking in english hahaha XD
Ahahaha, I had a friend with me that held the camera for that part.
HA you got me! 😆 What a fantastic hike, thank you for taking us along ❄️
Thanks for coming!
Wonderful! And hahaha - you made me laugh so hard!
That was my goal! Glad it worked!
I see it the snowfall has not been as bad (or good depending on how you view things) as in Niigata and Fukushima. I have to say this is beautiful snow walk! Soon time for snow shoes!
That's true! Though this was filmed about 2 weeks ago and we did get a few good dumps after that!
Thanks for sharing another beautiful winter hike with us :) are there actually any good water proof clothing "brands" that you recommend for winter hiking?
Thanks for watching! I think any of the normal brands have good winter hiking clothes. I am in Japan - so Montbell, but Northface, Columbia, etc. all make good stuff!
The atmosphere looks incredible. Painting or photography maybe?
The atmosphere is great!!
Thank you for a beautiful, snow hike. Are bears still that abundant nowadays, or are the bells mostly a remnant?
No- I've never seen a bear out when there's anywhere near this much snow. I guess some people just are being extra careful...
I was about to get really excited for one of your ancient folklore stories....then😂.
By the way, did they ever catch who vandalized one of the trails you were on a while back...with the spray paint?
Ahahaha, sorry about that!
Yes- the caught the guy right away, but they didn't release the details until much later for some reason. He is from the UK and lives in Morioka. He was fined I guess, but not kicked out of the country or jailed or anything.
Thanks so much for making this video! It's inspired me to go to North Japan and I MIGHT be flying out tomorrow (standby flight)! I saved the location for the Mt Kurakake trailhead that you shared on your other video (5 beginner hikes) but I'm wondering how to get there and back from Morioka without a car rental? I would have gotten a car but the trip is sooo last minute, I cannot get the IDL in time. Is there a bus or shuttle or do I have to take a taxi? Hard to find this info!! Looking to be up there around the 6th-8th of Jan!!
Hi! That's great! Hope you make it up here!
It is rather hard, as there isn't any bus to the trail head during the winter. So your be a taxi or a guide that will drive you! (wink wink)
Quinlin rings the bell.
A bear turns over in his cave.
"Is it lunchtime?"
Another bear yawns. "No. It's just the boy fucking about."
Ahahaha nice
FUN FUN FUN :D
Ahahaha, I'm glad you thought so too!
Do you usually still have snow in late March? Asking for myself, as I'm definitely going up to Morioka for at least 2 days of my trip 😀
There should still be snow up in the mountains, but probably not in the city. Great that you'll come!
The Tengu is sweating right now watching this video...
"How'd you find out?"
Ahahaha, nice
Completely unrelated topic but are you related to EricSurf6? You guys look so similar I thought you must be his younger brother or his nephew or something?
Ahaha, I had to google him. Nice comparison, thanks!
Is there public transport to the campground in late Feb if we don't drive?
During the winter I don't think there is... I think you'd have to take a cab, rent a car, or hire someone like me as a guide... sorry!
@@GoNorthJapan no problem, I think we'll skip Iwate this time, hard to plan with only public transport. Thanks anyway
What is that ? 4:38 The yon for 4 ? and then 00 . I would have thougfht they would either write yon hyaku for 400 or 400 but not a combination of both 🤣
They are rather casual about that kind of thing on those signs! They go back and forth between hiragana and katakana as well, and use "m" instead of katakana...
