***DISCLAIMER and IMPORTANT NOTE: Hiking any mountain in Japan, including Mt. Iwate can be very dangerous. People do die on that mountain during the winter. There can be TONS more snow than when we went, it's easy to get lost, slip, become injured, freeze to death, etc. We went at the very beginning of winter, which isn't so harsh, and we were ready to turn around at any point if it looked bad. Please be careful with winter hiking in Japan. People do actually die every year doing this, though usually in January and February.
I love hiking Mt. Iwate -- check out my other Mt. Iwate videos here:

QUESTION: The next couple videos may be food/sake related as I'm not sure when I'll have the time/energy to hit another (more fierce) winter mountain in the next month or so. Are you guys ok with videos related to local food/drink on this channel as well? Or would you prefer interviews with locals? I've made friends with a Zen (Soto-shu) Monk that I'd like to interview and introduce. How would that be?
I'd prefer interviews with locals, hearing from a zen monk especially sounds interesting! local food/drink vids also sounds good though :)
All of that sounds good! I love hiking, but I also love Japan, and even those viewers who might be primarily interested in hiking around Morioka will have to spend some time at the foot of the mountain, eating and sniffing culture :)
Could you ask the monk about the small statues all around the hiking trails?
Videos about local food/drink/culture and also interviews with locals would be really interesting. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful climb.
So well done, Quinlan. Morioka and further north are on my list 2020. As an avid hiker, I appreciate your efforts and enthusiasm 😊🇨🇦🇯🇵
I’m going to have to start training in early 2020 so I can join you on these amazing treks without dying en route.
I'm going to hold you to that!
The passion the Cris, can't wait to see the cursing!!
From Journey Across Japan to Journey Above Japan :D
Journey Across Japan: Trekking Edition?
Please say that that's your plan for Journey Across Japan 3 - would surely be soooo entertaining (mostly because of all the cursing that I'd expect) :D
Understatement of the decade: "It's pretty warm, it's only minus 3 degrees here".
I'm from the Caribbean and I cannot fathom that type of weather.
Production quality on this one was absolutely incredible, especially when you consider all the problems you faced while filming. Mt. Iwate in the Winter sure is stunning :)
Thank you!!
All the respect for starting by saying it isn’t about the summit, but getting down safely. Highly underestimated! I’m leaving Tokyo today, but went up Fujisan last week, and even with 9 months of research, there was little information to draw from about winter ascents. Now that I’m in Japan, I’m finding all these locals and RUclips videos about mountaineering in Japan! Very glad I got to your channel via Abrooad In Japan. Hopefully I can try this next winter when I attempt Fuji again.
Deeper in winter is definitely a huge difference and a helmet and ice axe would be some good technical gear to get when winter gear goes on sale. And check with GoPro to see if they would sponsor you with some body attachments/cases.
I’d love it if you’d get some more of these winter mountain experiences on film. Not only is this encouraging but good insight can mean the different between life and death out there. 🙌🏻
Winter hikes are truly magical. By the way, it is "Steigeisen" in German. Phonetically, that would be シュタイグアイゼン in 片仮名 (from steigen = 登る and eisen = 鉄), so the Japanese just used the last part アイゼン (which in German just literally means "iron") to come up with the 外来語. ;)
Wow 08:15 is like a path to Heaven, truly amazing!
Yeah look at this! It’s incredible!🤩
Yeah, that’s the cabine whose bathroom is closed (but that can be used)! Hi again!😅
Yeah; that’s Dave in Japan and Risotoro making a cameo in the intro!😂
And, really, what else can be said? That this channel is not at two million subscribers is a crime!😔
And that I feel privileged to be here along for the ride😊
Hahaha, I appreciate your vote of confidence! And good eye in the intro! ;)
this is the first video from your channel I've seen and now I'm gonna binge watch the rest
It looks breath-taking.
It is so beautiful there.
Every time I come to Morioka (quite a few times) I always take my time and look up at Mount Iwate and I always want to hike up it. But have not done it yet unfortunately, just a few smaller mountains around Iwate.
10:19 love how the small bushes look here.
What brings you to Morioka?
Yeah, it is really beautiful when viewed from Morioka...
The small mountains are great too!
My gf lives in Kitakami and her work takes her to Morioka some days of the week and I like to follow and just walk around some times.
Also, one can't miss the Morioka Sansa Odori each year :)
Think it was the Mount Hayachine I hiked up the first time in Iwate.
Some incredible video there I must agree
When it gets that cold, you need either special batteries or warmers for the batteries. If the battery hits 0%, you can pop the battery out and warm it inside your clothes and it will come back. But the same problem persists if it's cold. You can try to use カイロ on action cams to keep them warm. Wrapping them in insulation also helps.
Good call. A カイロ stuck to the back of the GoPro might work!
thats breathtaking
First! :P Looking good man. Gotta watch the full thing later.
Do it! ;)
Looks kinda cold ngl, but also picturesque 😍
Found that strangely moving when you summited, wasn't expecting sunshine at all when you saw the mist just before!
Man, volcanoes are such a slog and gorgeous at the same time. Thank you for sharing such an amazingly beautiful day.
Great video. Really enjoyed it. Thank you
Another wonderful video! The views from the mountain are absolutely stunning, like another world! Thank you for sharing this - feels like I’m on the trail. You’re a natural with these videos. 👍
Thank you so much!!
The sea of cloud on the summit of Mt. Iwate and the view of the city is stunning. Thanks for the amazing video :)
Oh wow what a view! Worth the cold 100%, well done for persevering! Looking forward to your food and drink vlogs yes for sure, I just enjoy your vlog style 😀👍
Thank you!
This was amazing! Glad to see you didn't do it alone, and Alice was there to lend you not only crampons but also a nice stabilising hiking pole :). Was walking on crampons doable in snow that thin?
It was not really enough snow to make the crampons necessary except in a few places. (I actually brought my own crampons. Crampons and snowshoes are about the only real gear I have. But I'll go shopping soon and spend my retirement on fun mountain gear.)
Looks like a fun trip! So beautiful up there
You nailed it .
Thanks.
Glad you guys made it back safe. Thanks for showing us such stunning views!
This is the most beautiful mountain climbing video I've ever seen.
This icescape.. incredible. There it's easy to see once again how on this earth we live in paradise.
Glad you made it up and back safely - and could even film such amazing shots. .. My appreciation for the pink fluffy blanket on me suddely intensified, and I remembered the only mountains I've climbed, those in beautiful Skyrim. ^^ Even virtually, people are moved by it.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes- it does appear paradisaical near the summit!
Haha, a friend of mine says watching some of my videos gives him Skyrim flashbacks... That is a beautiful game. I wish the VR interface was better...
@@GoNorthJapan Yes, it must be, so many feels remembering exploring in the snow. ^^ It's been ages since I played but I do remember modding felt.. needed.
It's likely I'll stick to smaller hills irl, so thank you even more for taking us along!
Such beautiful quality! Thanks again for an informative gorgeous video! You always make me want to go for a hike! Curious was that Chris and Ryotoro in your intro?
Nice catch! That was indeed Chris and Ryotaro in the intro. I just did a video with them recently that will probably go out on Abroad in Japan in early January. (I didn't film my own, just appeared in his.)
Thanks! I was really happy with how the video near the top of the mountain looked as well!
fabulous view , congratulations and well done for getting to the top, thank you for sharing such a wonderful journey , and thank you to Kate too , have a beautiful week
Thanks!
Wow! That really did look otherworldly😲 please keep doing these videos you make such amazing content!
Thank you, I'll do my best!
Beautiful! Although I think I’ll stick with the low, warm mountains in Kyushu!
Hahaha, yeah those are some beautiful mountains as well.
That was beautiful! Glad Chris brought me to the channel.
Hope to climb it too one day...
Do you wear sunscreen in the winter when you hike up mountains? When I tried to climb Mt. Fuji (I got close, but my guide told me to turn around before reaching the summit), I got badly sunburnt, even though it was a pretty cloudy day!
Yeah, I turned purple when I climbed Mt. Fuji back in 2003. I was an idiot and forgot. I do put on sun screen these days, and sometimes even re-apply on the way down.
@@GoNorthJapan - Purple?! Dang man! I'm a pretty pale boi and even I haven't achieved that level of sunburn lol!
Great adventure, fortunately the snow level was very low. I imagined you hiking in knee deep or more snow. I saw lots of steps on the lower part, did you see other hikers.
Yeah, it was really quite mild for the winter. There were about 8 other hikers on the mountain that day. Many of them were in their 50s!
MAGNIFICENT IN ALL HER GLORY !!!!!!
😎🦘🐨
I'm here from your oden video with Sharla! Great, relaxing video to watch keep it up uwu
Awesome, looking forward to the next video.
Nice video man.
if you got more like this, im on Board
Spectacular hike ! Thanks for making the effort to video as much of it as you did 👍. I learned my lesson about batteries and cold while photographing Columbia Glacier, Alaska, in 1979. The battery powering the cameras light meter died, and my battery powered quartz watch stopped 😆❄️.
Wow, that must have been epic! I would love to visit Alaska... someday!
Great video thanks for all the hard working you put into this as just walk was difficult never mind trying the record. And it really got us excited about our upcoming trip to Yamagata in January hopefully we will get some good hikes in 😀👍🏴🇬🇧
Thanks! I want to go to Yamagata soon too... definitely want to explore the Dewasanzan area...!
Thankyou! Morioka looks a beautiful place indeed. I’d love to visit Mt Iwate one day.
Yes! Highly recommended!
Nice vid!
Great adventure! We'll get you climbing/camping Fujisan in winter yet! 😉
Awesome channel!
Wow..
It is actually called that in German. That's pretty interesting, because I know Japanese has quite a few loanwords from English, but I didn't know of any from German
This is another one, アルバイト (arubeito) meaning part-time work.
Interestingly lots of medical words in Japanese are loaned from German too
Backpack is リュック which is short for rucksack. Ice axe is ピッケル which is short for eispickel. Many other mountaineering words are from German, including シュラーフ which is schlafsack.
next time! I will happy if you go the Halla mountain in Jeju S.korea. ⛰️
I would love to go there!
Great video! Would love to come back up north again this winter!
Definitely! Hope you can!
Another beautiful video, shame about the GoPro. Thanks for for adding the gear in the comments as well! :)
The music in this video is very nice. Who’s the artist/title?
And that scene at the summit with the clouds was superb
Thanks. It's always sooo hard to choose music. End up spending way to much time browsing through music before I can find something I like.
I use epidemicsound.com - it's a paid service. They have a huge database of music you can use. So unfortunately the music isn't on Spotify, etc. just on that service.
After watching this, I gotta get back in shape and dust off the mountaineering gear.
Always a good idea!
i dont understand why you dont have more views
Was this legal? Weren't the roads closed? Looks amazing!
There are no laws around when you can hike any mountain up here. You could hike Mt. Iwate in February if you wanted. It's dangerous, and not many people do, but there's no legality issue.
@@GoNorthJapan Gotcha! Thought that might be the case :)
Good vid bro.
you are one healthy dude
Just all glory ALLL glory hahaha -20 mountains... You and I have different understandings of glory
Just incredible!!
That place looks fucking awesome :O
I'm heading to Japan in mid Feb, still undecided where to go. How's the weather typically like in Feb in Iwate area? is Mt Iwate hikable without special winter/snow gear?
Nice! Mt. Iwate is hikeable in Febuary- but you DEFINITELY need serious winter gear and it can be dangerous. I would suggest Mt. Moriyoshi in Akita! You can see gorgeous snow monsters, rent snowshoes there, as the trailhead is the top of the gondola at the Ani Ski Resort.
Also Hakkoda is great during that season. If you're in Hachimantai, just hiking out to Nanataki Ice Falls is also great!
February is a great month. You will need nice warm clothes - but tons of spots are perfect then. But Mt. Iwate is a bit hardcore then.. so wouldn't recommend unless you've done a lot of winter climbing and have an ice axe, crampons, snowshoes, etc.
@@GoNorthJapan thanks for the tips Quinlan. Yes definitely not hardcore hiker. I live in Australia never done winter hiking with snow so not gonna puch too hard but the sceneries are amazing from your video ❤️
Great video. Never even thought about climbing in winter. I know you want to look good for the camera, but bro, wear a helmet!
Yeah... I should buy a helmet. Could attach a separate GoPro to the top or something like those skiers do...
Chris Broad told me to subscribe yours.
I know you were changing all throughout because of the weather but what kind of layer clothing were you wearing? Saw a vest, jacket, and a whole bunch of others.
I should ask Alice what she was wearing again.. she is the one with proper gear.
I had a t-shirt, then a rather warm Patagonia fleece (that I inherited from a friend - I wish I could afford to buy Patagonia gear myself...), a down vest over that, and finally the outer shell was a nice ski jacket that I bought a couple years ago. Then I had two sets of gloves for the summit, the soft ones you see in the beginning, with a warm pair I use for skiing over them at the summit. A hat, neck warmer, and goggles... Then on the way down we each used one ski pole so we would each have a free hand for holding ropes and branches.
@@GoNorthJapan Okay. I was curious because I went on a hike recently (inspired by your work) and started sweating then got cold because of the sweating. Just trying to find a good way to regulate my body temperature in different weathers
@@travelingz3855 Yes- that happens. Alice has some nice breathable gear that saves you from that. You just gotta spend the money I guess. I have yet to buy proper stuff, but I will soon. When you buy nice gear it lasts... so worth the investment. It's not cheap though.
I hike a lot and always get warm too! Merino wool is apparently the best for a base layer, as it stays warm when wet, is breathable and doesn't itch most people. Because I do find it itchy, I wear synthetic base layers when I can; you can get things like synthetic sports shirts and leggings quite cheap, and then layer over them with more rugged hiking pants and warm vests and jackets. Should work if you remember to take off the warm midlayer when you get hot!
Can you tell me what song that is 5:24 please?
A Call From the Wild by Runedale
Awesome video. Anyone wants to do this hike on December 24 this year (of course assuming the conditions allow it)?
I would love to, but I'll be visiting family away from Japan then this year...
@@GoNorthJapan Thank you for your response & no worries. If I make it I'll post how it went here.
