    After feeling defeated in not finding a new or used headliner board for his mazda 2003 automobile a friend came to me as his last hope to see if I could fix it and reupholster it.
    Most of the front and right lateral part of the board was crushed down...the problem is this car had suffered a collision and tumbled over on the right side.
    This cardboard was made of fiber glass and it was covered with a thick cloth strongly glued to its surface.
    The idea is make this board recover its original shape without peeling off the original cloth. Some 6 cm wide galvanized thin sheets were useful to lift the deformed board to its original shape. As you can see the thin sheets are light but with a 1 cm fold to reinforce the edges. These metal sheets were attached to the board by using rivets.
    To erase irregularities I thoroughly glued a sheet of dense manta(muslin) as a backing cloth.
    As last touch a like-suede cloth was upholstered on top...the 'hair' of the suede should comb forwards. To protect this suede is advisable to spray a special teflon all over its surface.
    I hope you find this video useful!

    Awesome! I've also failed to find a used headliner for my Land Rover (new ones are far too expensive!) so this gives me some great ideas to re-form and reupholster my own

    For smaller, lighter applications like older chevys and such, use ample amount of adhesive and wait for it.....drywall jointer tape that looks like its weaved together.

    Good morning Mr. Cechaflo I have repaired a headliner when it has a small whole,and maybe a dent but if it's really broken I go the the junk yard and take it out of another car. I like that you can repair it when there's noting else you can do, I don't think I would try this. I'm glad your doing it great job like I said your the master

      The issue is my friend the owner of the car went to many local junkyards with no success. I sent this guy to go and get a used one in good shape but he could not get one.

    About how long did this take?. My Saab 900 headliner is made of this cheap pressed fibrous board crap. Your video is very useful on how to reinforce the board, but can you explain a little more as to what to do when the cloth headliner is glued to the board, but the bond of cloth is to strong to come off without pulling layers of the board apart?

    What the best kind of glue to use on these fiberglass.. regular contact cement or the gel kind

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  8 месяцев назад +1

      The regular contact cement. A sprayable one is the best.

    Thank you for a great film, very interesting and unique approach to repair a headliner. May I ask you if you removed any doors or seats to put it back? On removing I slightly broke my headliner, but it was more flexible. Now after I repaired it I'm afraid it won't go back until I remove the front door or even some seats. I painted it w/several layers of Bondo Fiberglass Resin + some patches of Fiberglass Mat. So the slit won't be there anymore and you can't squeeze that headliner a small bit. I have a small passenger car 2001 Saturn SL2.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  Год назад +2

      Sometimes it is not necessary to remove the front seats. At most to ease the process, bend them back to make more room. In other cases it is necessary.

      @@Cechaflo Thank you very much, it is good to know. I pulled the headliner out via the rear driver door (with front seats down), but I suspect it was possible bcs one end of the HL was broken like 1.5 in and also there was that split at the end. I tried slightly via the front passenger door the rear ends (and this is the widest part) went through, but maybe still won't be enough room to maneuver correctly. I have a shop manual for that car, it should be described there about front seats. I'm happy that it is not the door. Seats are only 4 bolts. But 1st I need to wait when the FG Resin painting dries well, then glue on a new cloth and so on. Thank you again.
      Update: I found in shop manual, it says just put the front seats down, no removal mentioned. And via front right door. I hoped that I can bent it a bit, but the Manual says: No-no, if you bent, it will break - a visible slit will form.

    QUESTION : Headliner in my 20yr merc is absolutely cooked (Cyprus). I tried to give it to a specialized shop, but they refused to take it, they said that surface is too damaged and adhesives will not stick for long. I think about covering the entire thing with fiber glass and epoxy and than use some automotive 2k primer before trying to glue the liner. What do you think about it? any suggestions?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  2 года назад +1

      I suppose the headliner was made out of fiberglass and its fibers are coming off.
      What you have thought is a good idea . After finishing the application you should evenly and smoothly sand off the surface before replacing the new headliner foamed fabric over.
      Another option would be to get a used headliner in good condition from a junkyard.

    • @contemporiser
      @contemporiser 2 года назад +1

      @@Cechaflo No hope for finding a junkyard replacement, and even if I get one, the condition will be the same - sun in Cyprus has no mercy. The original headliner was made of some kind of light, stiff polyester-like material. It is too soft to be properly sanded, that is why I think about covering it with fiberglass. My only concern is, how to make sure that adhesive will hold to non porous surface like that. Do you think that automotive 2k undercoat would give a better properties than just sanded fiberglass?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  2 года назад +1

      @@contemporiser I now understand much better what is happening. You are located in the Cyprus Republic.
      What you have thought about reinforcing the surface with a coat of fiber glass is correct.
      Try to get an even and smooth surface. It happens that irregularities are reflected on top after putting the new headliner.
      Regarding the glue I would recommend the best similar you can find in the city where you live.
      This glue can be applied by using a brush to seal the cardboard surface: ruclips.net/video/o2xeezdF8Ss/видео.html
      The secret for a better adhesion is the application of two coats over the surface. The first coat acts as a primer to seal the pores. The second coat is the good one.
      If you are going to use a glue sprayer gun it is also important the first coat all over the cardboard surface.
      After this procedure you should spray glue over both, the reverse foam of headliner material and cardboard surface that already has its 'primer glue'.

    What type of metal material are you using and where might I find it. I am trying to find. Thank you for sharing!!

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  2 года назад +2

      I was forced to use that metal because the cardboard was too distorted. Otherwise I only would have used thin cardboard to reinforce the back side.
      I used a very thin gauge(to reduce weight) galvanized metal sheet. I am located in Mexico and do not know suppliers in the USA, sorry.

    Buen dia, disculpa que pregunte fuera del tema del vídeo pero me urge una opinion experta. Recomiendas una maquina industrial con servo motor en el cabezal integrado? O es preferible que tenga el servo motor a parte y que funcione con banda como el motor electrico? Gracias por tus videos!!

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  7 лет назад

      Estimado Antonio, mi conocimiento sobre 'servo motors' es limitado. Sólamente puedo decirle que la mayoría de máquinas industriales para hacer tapicería vienen con el 'servo motor' en la parte inferior en reemplazo de los conocidos 'clutch motors'.

    • @tonnylerm559
      @tonnylerm559 7 лет назад

      Cechaflo Entiendo. Y será confiable una máquina electrónica moderna con motor en el cabezal en lugar del motor en la parte inferior? Por lo poco que sé, una maquina electronica casera es algo delicada para el trabajo, la verdad no tengo idea de la maquina industrial electronica.

    I wish you spoke in your videos, sometimes Icd like to know what some of the material is (like that hard thick stuff with yellow writing on the back).

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  7 лет назад

      The only yellow stuff in the back is those hard polyurethane square blocks on both sides of the cardboard which are useful to align it to metal frame and not let the carddboard be loose. I removed them to inspect and repair the cardboard itself...after, I fixed/glued the broken parts adding some hard foam and put/stuck them back again

    me puedes decir que tipo de cola de contacto
    liquida usas para la pistola hidraulica

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  7 лет назад

      Este pegamento de contacto viene bien fluido (baja viscosidad) y lo venden en las tiendas de artículos para tapicería. Hay de muchas marcas y tiene que ser especial para aplicar con la pistola de aire comprimido. El producto es similar para el pegado de formica.

    • @Cechaflo

      Este pegamento simplemente lo aplico tal como viene de fábrica, no lo mezclo con nada mas. Este pegamento es el mismo que usan los tapiceros y zapateros de muchas partes. Sólo cambian las marcas. No sé en Ecuador cual será el nombre comercial. Estuve viendo el internet y aparece una marca:www.google.com.mx/search?q=africano+cemento+de+contacto+en+ecuador&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwid3vyNzrvVAhUCKyYKHXgyBcEQ_AUICigB&biw=1536&bih=760#imgrc=5JnPPWgZISVjmM:

      Este pegamento amarillo es el mismo que usan la mayoría de tapiceros y zapateros de muchas partes, lo que cambia es la marca comercial. Viene embasado en botellas de vidrio o en recipientes metálicos. este pegamento se utiliza también para pegar la formica a la madera.
