  • Usually shadows are simple and dark and all the color variation is in the light area. but, if the shadows are large they get lighter and you have more color variation.

Thank you again for repeating over and over how important getting your shadows and light correct! I'm serious. I could hear and see this critical lesson every day and see examples of it constantly. It takes repetition and a lot of practice to get this skill locked in. You do not just hear it once and, voila, you are a fantastic painter.

If you don't have Photoshop just make a couple of L-strips. Move the strips around your computer monitor to position the focal area and size of the final image. It's easy and quick.

Great information. I have a dumb question but when applying broken color do you just push pull the original paint pile or mix a new pile. What’s the best technique to stay within the same value range.

If you have an area that is sun-lit, like a field, does broken color work in that too or just shadows? I have a large grassy area that is sun lit that I am working on that I am having trouble getting it to look interesting enough.

Looked at your pictures on line, top notch work. Do you have any tips for overcast gray sky's. With harmonising colours for the lights and darks, without turning to black or white. Live in the north of England and don't have the light of some parts of the states.

Amazing as always. I feel that my shadows might be too dark. Do you try to keep your shadows above a certain value?
