I’ve seen on bright lines, on the other segments, such as Miami to West Palm or Fort Lauderdale. They seem like they’re constantly having specials for children, ride free with paid adults, and other special
Driving is not half the cost. Its much higher if you factor in the purchasing cost, maintenance, insurance, along with gas/electricity of the car. Also, Brightline's selling point is their luxury and convenience, NOT low price. You may not be part of their target demographic of businessmen and vacationing families, which is fine.
I live in orlando area. And i did many trips to miami due to university and believe me i can transport the family to and fro for half the cost. 200$ for gasoline including food , breakfast and lunch.
I don’t get it. Seems very expensive compared to driving. Gas cost would be about $50 each way, assuming 250 miles, 20 MPG, at $4.00 per gallon. And then you have your car to get around while you’re there. My thinking must be missing something.
I'd like to make the case that Driving costs thousands of dollars a year, and the ride is about 3 hours long, which is almost the same as the train, not counting in traffic problems. Plus, not only can you save money on it, it also helps the environment, and prevents thousands of tonnes of CO2 gas being emitted into the air. About the public transportation, Orlando doesn't have much going on for it (Sunrail and the BRT are terrible), but you are forgetting that Brightline will utilize a rideshare service to make up for this and transport people to their destination utilizing Orlando's existing car infrastructure. It's not efficient, but it's far better than the alternative. Another point I'd like to make about your comment of it being expensive, it may look like that at first, but it's very cheap when you line out the cost next to driving and flying. Driving may look less expensive, but it will cost you thousands per year for maintenance, fuel, that kind of stuff. The cost is only 64 dollars lesser than an airplane ticket, and this news article weighs the cost for 4 people, not one. One last point I'd like to make is that Brightline is a very comfortable service with a very large amount of amenities. You will understand why the costs look like that, when the service feels so smooth and full of luxury. It will make you change your mind about the cost. I have one last suggestion for you, don't follow these kinds of news articles. They do nothing but try to go after and cherry pick one of the few bad things about the whole project, and then blow it completely out of proportion.

it's pretty tough to judge who the target market is for bl when connectivity is so poor in florida. but i would guess lots of individuals and some couples. for nearly everyone using bl, they'll face a problem of last mile service. of course the same is true of air travelers who have the additional hassle of showing up early and having to clear security. however, considering that orlando to miami will have capacity south of 4k/day when it begins service, i suspect brightline will have no trouble running at very very high load factors with forecasted range of gas prices, parking fees, and airfares. consider airlines (aa and dl) have about 2k seats/day (depending on day) and are running very high load factors at 1.5-2x the fare brightline is asking. and this is just considering end-to-end. there are of course several relatively stops along the way where brightline passengers heading from/to other cities can have service where flights don't exist and aforementioned car challenges still exist. again, bl will have no trouble at currently published rates running very high load factors. families may still choose to drive, but i would bet lots of individuals and couples start taking bl even considering last mile challenges. currently, with bl you can pay same as airfare (158 is the cheapest rt non-stop airfare mco-mia for basic economy w/ carryon no checked bag) at 158. But with BL, you can get $7/day parking if pre-paid. And you can take a full sized checked bag with you. So, think solo and couple travelers. This is who BL is squarely going after.
