  • Today we're trying out the new Horten IX / Ho 229 (…or Gotha Go 229) by Rara-Avis Sims, over the fantastic freeware EDRC Marpingen scenery and check out its aerobatic capabilities.
As with Rara-Avis’ Wren and Flying Flea I’ve been really looking forward to the Horten, as it is such an iconic aircraft, but one I wouldn’t have expected to see in MSFS.
As was the case with previous releases by Rara-Avis Sims, the visual model is fantastic, with tons of details, sharp textures and nice features. The sounds are quite good too and it’s great to see another custom sound pack (as the Flying Flea had to use Asobo sounds).
The flight model overall feels good, it requires quite a bit of rudder inputs and especially during steep turns it is possible to run out of rudder authority. I think with a flying wing design that is plausible. Takeoffs and Landings are also unusual, as you touch down with the nose gear first and lift the main gear on takeoff before the nose wheel leaves the ground. It’s great to see this idiosyncrasy represented in the sim.
When it comes to the performance of the aircraft it is however very overpowered in my opinion. I used about 60% power during takeoff and 50% during the rest of the flight. But still the aircraft accelerated extremely quickly and flew at around 700 kph without any issues.
Which leads us to the main issue, the engine modeling. A real Jumo 004 idles at 3080 RPM and has its redline at 8700 RPM. The game version idles at 8000 RPM and reaches 14,000 RPM at full throttle. Another thing to mention is that a lot of the early jet engines spooled up extremely slowly and in fact if you advanced the throttle too quickly with the Jumo 004 there was a risk of engine fire. The game version spools up extremely quickly and the throttle is hard to adjust precisely. If you move it just a tiny bit from idle there is immediately a 2000 RPM jump.
Apart from the performance/engine issue I only noticed three other small things that could use some improving. I think like most tricycle geared aircraft of WWII the nose wheel shouldn’t be steerable. The stick animations are very abrupt and don’t reflect the user inputs 100 % (an issue with many MSFS aircraft). And the Flaps Indicator doesn’t seem to be correct. The light for “Aus” (Out) shines when the flaps are up and the light for “Ein” (In) shines when the flaps are down.
Overall, I think it’s a good addon and I’m happy to see a nice representation of a Horten in the sim. I really hope however, that the engine performance will get adjusted, as that would make it a truly great addon!

Absolutely brilliant video… the opening flypast was spectacular… I can imagine the shock of the spectators when they first saw the plane in action. Great stuff!! 👏🏻👏🏻😄

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it =) Yeah that would be quite a sight to see 😄The Messerschmitt Foundation used to operate a glider replica of a Me-163 Komet. I was lucky enough to see it fly quite a few years ago at an airshow. That was an unusual looking plane, but compared to the Horten it still looks quite conventional 😅

Lovely. Not only the simulation but the small-town, local feel of the landscape and airfield. Like a convincing glimpse into an alternate history where this aircraft had a truly successful debut in the 30s and 40s.

Thank you very much! I always enjoy small grass strips, also in real life, they always feel more homely/intimate. Marpingen, even though I've never been there is one of my favorite airfields in MSFS. I'm glad you like it too =) Who knows, there are three Me 262 replicas with modern engines flying, maybe someone someday is crazy enough to build a replica of a Horten, it would be a fun sight!

It is a pretty cool looking aircraft.. I always loved it in games but after having read some peoples experience with the horten gliders I wonder how practically to fly it might have been or not.

I agree, it's a very unusual but pretty design, especially in bare wood. I must admit I haven't read many flying reports, but I've read a report of a Horten IV. The pilot was very skeptical at first but started to enjoy it quite quickly once in the air.

Love the fly-by, I have good memories of flying the GO 229 in the old Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe game from the early '90s. This MSFS version is a little bit more high fidelity than that however....
Shame about the engine modelling not being quite right because otherwise this looks and sounds fantastic.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it =) I hadn't heard of that game before, but the cover artwork looks great. I remember flying it in Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 and catching fire on a regular basis because I advanced the throttle to quickly 😅
That's true. I hope that gets updated, otherwise it's a fantastic aircraft.

@@vintagesimulations SWOTL was basically my gateway drug into flight sims, went through a few after it (Aces over Europe/The Pacific, European Air War, etc) but didn't really find another that grabbed me the same way until the original IL-2 series. I did end up with the 1946 version of that but I don't have any memories of flying this particular aircraft in it for some reason (when typing my first post had to google if it was even in IL-2 and flyable).
As far as realistic early gen turbojets in MSFS goes have you tried the freeware, 1950's era, Cessna T-37 Tweet? The dev seems to have got them spot on as they take a while to react to throttle changes. No engine fires from rapid throttle changes though, only if don't follow the engine start checklist correctly and have excess fuel in the engine when combustion starts. The A-37 from the same dev has more modern turbojets which seem (to me at least) to respond faster although still not as fast as current turbine engines.
Either way it makes landing both of them "interesting" to land as you have to keep the turbine RPM at 70-80% so that in the event of a go-around you don't run out of runway waiting for them to spool back up. To slow down enough you have to use full flaps, air-brakes and thrust deflectors (that activate with the air-brakes at

The engine performance definitely is, resulting in way to high speeds and a sling shot like takeoff. But with the engines throttled back I think the rest of the flight model is quite good. I like that it is a bit unstable in yaw, I would expect that from a flying wing design.

@@vintagesimulations Germany did not get roasted only by the skin of her ass.
I always wondered about the personality types that a seemingly rational decent person knowing what the government was doing still took up arms to maintain the regime. I have seen a few episodes on that Ace German pilot that became very popular after The War (the name fails me). He seems a very considerate person so why do it? As a former infantry fighting man myself I would like to think I had the balls and decency to resign if my country fought a war like that. I know we did do Vietnam (not as bad) but they lied their asses off to convince us that we had to be there. That was before my time, I just joined Earth while we were still there. My sense of what is good and what is harmful is not affected by nationalism.
I know they toss out excuses like if things get so bad you will try any form of government. I suppose we will never know until it happens again. I'm just glad my time to jump back off the Earth is approaching.
Supposedly we stole the design for that wing after The War for the B-2 bomber as with everything else. The feed-tray cover for the M-60 is from the MG-42.
After looking at pictures for the MG-42 it seems we copied damn near the whole gun and just tuned it down to a rational more sustainable level.

The Horten brothers were on to something 😉 They are the real pioneers of flying wing designs. They were self-taught and started with flying wing models in their teens and build their first full size aircraft when they were just 18 & 20 years old. As far as I know the design of the Ho 229 also started before there was any contract with the government, but I'm not 100 % sure on that.
