Doogle Ticker Don't be an ass, he obviously wasn't saying other people are pussies for not being in a submarine. But you've got a lot better chance of survival if your surface ship is sunk vs. if your submarine is. Not to mention the potential for getting stuck or damaged without even receiving enemy fire. Read some of the horror stories of people who have survived sub disasters or were just forced to stay submerged for days at a time, I'll take a bullet over the torture of that.
Doogle Ticker You continue to put words in his mouth that he never said, that they need a pat on the back for their self esteem. I'm sorry your sensitivities were insulted by me saying you were being an ass. Have mommy put a bandaid on where it hurts.
The nerves of steel that this captain and crew had were legendary. The "Down The Throat" shot became this captain's standard method of attack. Highly risky, but Highly successful.
This attack scene is also shown in 'Run Silent, Run Deep' with Clark Gable and Kirk Douglas. One correction, when the Captain ordered 'Fire 3', that meant fire the torpedo in tube #3.
Modern boats use sound and wire guidance for their torpedoes. Those were not available in WW2 and the MK 14 were not reliable at first. I remember as a Canadian Royal Army Cadet, I once went on a trip where I got to tour inside of 2 commissioned submarines while they were docked and they showed us the giant torpedoes and said that each one costed like $1200 or more depending on what kind of torpedo it was
They should have put all their men on deck, after having armed them with gas-pipes and any other sort of junk, RAISE A BLACK, PIRATE FLAG and announce through a megafone, they'll board the destroyer. That would certainly scare the enemy off.

well, i read a book about U-boats (story, not informative) and a WW2 submarine can go 40 meter under water. i believe thats 130 feet so thousands of feet is a bit too much but i would definitly get claustrofobia in there
The world war 2 subs were not true subs but more accurately called submersibles, though their crush depth, about 700-800 feet down, wasn't that much worse than they are now.

I'd rather be on a War ship than a Sub, I don't care if the Ship got Torpedoed at least you got a chance of surviving, in a Submarine you got no where to go, and you might as well say it's your coffin Ha!!! :P] .v ..
just one thing forgotten is that the destroyer may throw depth chargers at the sub and the sub being that close under the ship is in serious trouble if they decided to throw depth charges
when I was in, 50 years ago, the doctrine was "fire" was an actual command to launch the torpedo. (or fire the gun) All preparatory language was "prepare to shoot" etc, so as not to cause a mistake, even though all commands had to be repeated, in a tense situation shit happens. "Fire" was also a casualty. Ditto for surface ships in the US at the time. Respectfully submitted.

Mind you, this was WWII technology and tactics. Modern torpedo targeting and guidance are far more accurate, but so is anti-submarine warfare. In modern submarine tactics a single shot, while in theory can be done within a few minutes, may more likely take hours to prepare (patience is not just a virtue when you don't want to be seen, it is a life-or-death necessity, and you have to maneuver slowly to guarantee both the hit and your survival) and an engagement may even take days in outmaneuvering your opponent.
There’s an excellent WWII submarine book that focuses on Wahoo and Morton, Unrestricted Warfare. The account isn’t exactly as portrayed here and the actual eyewitness accounts are much more interesting. They couldn’t dive deep because they were in a harbor.

Too bad US torpedoes were unreliable until late WW2. Unreliable as Navy pre-ww2 purchase never tested. It would be cool if they could create the opposite of a sub launched missile. A torpedo that fires from the bottom, sinks to a low depth then arcs back up under the belly of the targeted ship and blows it up that way.
When they say "Fire 2" or "Fire 3" does that mean they fired 2 or 3 torpedoes...? Or they are firing tube 2 or 3..? Have they made a mistake in narration...?
Though this is WWII stuff still, very interesting. First shots were taken from too far away from the destroyer. In the beginning of WWII, the battle in the Pacific was largely left to our submarine fleet. So many of those brave officers and men are still there on "eternal patrol." RIP.

Doesn't matter what kind of a sub it is, if something goes wrong, there's a good chance you'll end up on the bottom, dead. I would not choose a submarine to serve on if it were the last thing on earth! They're just scary and claustrophobic! Hats off to those who serve on one!
The smithsonian channel puts out smithsonian quality videos. So much history packed into a well produced and highly entertaining show.

Not if the submarine is an allied one
I must admit I have admiration for any nations submariners it takes a special kind of courage to do their job.
Where I am it's a high needs job, as in they want volunteers. I wouldn't and even if I could I am too tall for submarines. I'd imagine you certainly need guts for that kind of work
Yep. Lots of courage.
Personally, I think the worst military job is infantry.

The captain does not fire it
The crew does it but the captain “orders” them to fire it.
😂
Let's be clear, this only applies to WWII submarine battles. Modern submarines engage targets VERY differently.
But this is a WWII submarine....
Ivan Matz this submarine was made in 1941
This is a uboat
Siddhartha Patra it is not a U-Boat because I’ve never seen a nazi speak English
Omar Ragab sure we have

Can anyone say what happened to those Torpedoes which misses the target?
I love this program and wish everyone in it happiness 🌹
I feel like modern torpedos have plenty of tracking technology to just be fired as a Hail Mary
not only the modern torpedos. 30-50 years back they weren't "stupid straight forward" also.
haha, this is a cute way of describing them, small but deadly.
Torpedo seeks the sound like SAM missile. But there are many counter devices which can distract torpedo.
the ww2 ones had tracking tech. but, it was so faulty it could turn around, lock on and destroy the same submarine that fired it.
Wahoo
The nerves of steel that this captain and crew had were legendary. The "Down The Throat" shot became this captain's standard method of attack. Highly risky, but Highly successful.

What has your comment turned into😂😂
@Big Fish you are over 9000 Gay. I have 9000 IQ
WWII US Navy submarines used a sophisticated device called the torpedo tracking computer to set the trajectory of torpedo's to their target.
Torpedo DATA Computer (TDC)
It doesnt track the ship, you input the data of the target and it creates a firing solution for you.
Imagine just chilling in a boat then three torpedoes hit the boat
I remember as a Canadian Royal Army Cadet, I once went on a trip where I got to tour inside of 2 commissioned submarines while they were docked and they showed us the giant torpedoes and said that each one costed like $1200 or more depending on what kind of torpedo it was
...torpedoes have ALWAYS been expensive and complicated weapons-!!!
Those prices would've been 1960s era .
They cost more than that...
While torpedoes are expensive, the things the Torpedo is destroying is more expensive than the torpedo itself
They should have put all their men on deck, after having armed them with gas-pipes and any other sort of junk, RAISE A BLACK, PIRATE FLAG and announce through a megafone, they'll board the destroyer. That would certainly scare the enemy off.

For trying to show how it is accurately done, they sure do say "fire" a lot. The proper term is "shoot", due to "fire" being a casualty term.
This is incorrect. The term is, in fact, "fire". It is only used in two situations, a casualty and during a weapons launch.
On my boat (SSN-709), fire was reserved for casualties. Shoot was term used to launch upon the enemy.
I can't quote the actual manual on here, but as an instructor in this subject, the term is "fire".
Ok, but if you served under my former commanders, you would use "shoot" lol.

both have great episodes on the SILENT SERVICE TV shows from old tv, now available on You Tube

Indian Submariners: 😂No it's not.
I'm going to fire all my Torpedoes and make sure that I do it right every time I make a mistake if I have enough
I bet they all yelled "WAHOO" after the torpedo hit.
0:55 😂😂
There's a lot that has to be taken into account and a lot of precise calculations. You only have so many torpedoes.
Modern torpedoes are not straight running anymore. They usually are wake homing and will change course to hit the ship.
This is what a space battle would be like
Imagine a sub commander with degree in mathematics that could do the figuring in his head
Dude wastes All the torpedoes he ends up being blind from one eye
As long as we're destroying each other we're happy campers.
Clutch moment irl
Doesn't the ship diving right below the destroyer open it up to depth charge attack?
Nothing is invincible
You sunk my battle ship
The torp hit the bow, and the sub dives beneath it, so why not depth charge the sub?
Modern torpedoes are wire guided like a tow missile.
Very true
WW2 submarine against submarine is extremely difficult.

Similar tactics in the old movie;'Run Silent, Run Deep'.
