I just want to say that I heard about Typhoon class submarine in 1987 when I was a student..no one knows its existance or exact location on that time but it was rumored that she was not only exists but also patrolling in north pacific oceans ..
Imagine being in school and just told that “oh and nobody knows for sure but there might be a soviet submarine capable to ending the US in about an hour out there and patrolling around northern canada”
I mean where else would they patrol, the US was clearly the primary threat during the Cold War.
There were several. And, fun fact, it had pressurized detachable compartments (basically, escape pods), a sauna and a pool (I’m serious, the Typhoon-class, known as the Akula (shark) in Russia, had a swimming pool)

Thank you for videos like this. Science and technology is what makes the world go round ( well at least make life easier). Now i know that many are not technically inclined,but IMO, if more people watched technical videos ( instead of being hooked on watching BS like Real Housewives of , fake wrestling, Kardashians, or some of the multitude other reality nonsense shows) that are explained and visually presented clearly like this one, videos on how things are built, how they work, the benefits of them, be it buildings, planes, cars, or any number of other things many people take for granted, i believe mankind could truly solve many problems that afflict us. Rocket engines DON'T need an atmosphere to burn. They all contain an oxidizer as part of the fuel mixture. The missiles don't fire underwater for other reasons.

I was the tracking party Helmsman on the first submarine to track a Typhoon class sub in 1979. We tracked it from it’s home port in Murmansk to near England. I will not say all we learned but what we learned required the MK48 torpedo’s we carried to be upgraded fleet wide, and within a year. The Typhoon goes deep, fast and loud. Very easy to track but when they decide to go fast it’s impressive even today the speed it can reach.
This has long been understood. A new type was built a long time ago. With love from Russia

Not quite, the missile tube is only connected with some pipes that gives compressed air for launching, that's usually it. So, after firing they usually flood the Missile tube to displace the amount of mass the missile left.

Um, the "rocket motor needs air to work" thing is pretty contradictory to the very nature of rocket motors, which is that they need no external fuel or substance to work. If it's air-breathing, it's a jet engine, not a rocket.
My guess would be that SSBNs are using cold launch systems because the rocket exhaust would damage the launch tubes. In addition, if a rocket malfunctions, it's not doing so (with possibly desastrous results) within the sub.
I do think you missed the air power which pushed the Rocket out of Sub 40 meters underwater until Rocket is clear of water and start igniting

Secondly, a spacecraft can't leave orbit and return to earth without firing it's engines to decelerate.

At 8:06 you say the rocket engine needs air to burn but they don't. The rocket uses the chemical oxygen in its fuel (either in the form of liquid oxygen or ammonium perchlorate). Otherwise how would rockets work in space?

I find it hard to believe that Russia is going to build more of these. They already have a replacement sub, the Borei class. The reason the Typhoon was so big was it had to fit around a missile they were using back in the 80s and 90s. Modern missiles are smaller.

- The steam canon is used to shoot the missle out of the tube and up to above the surface of the water where it slowsdown & a motion sensor chip fires the rocket motor the instant it senses a movement drop down toward the water again.
- This all happens in a blink & to an untrained eye looks like the rocket launched from the tube by firing its engine.
- The reason for this is that the rocket engin thrust bell would rupture from over pressure of trying to keep the exploding water steam from doing damage.
- This is why the popular, huge, floating verticaly, water launched *SEA DRAGON* rocket was never seriously considered as an option for putting huge payloads into LEO after Appolo.
This is a simplified description of a rocket launch from a depth of 50 meters. Here, for the first time, the rocket does not stand on the table, but hangs on the upper part of the rocket, which is called ARSS (shock-absorbing rocket-launch system), which has another function - it creates an air cavity in the water when the rocket moves after launch ...

@@oubaaspretorius7303 I think it is NaClO3. But you are correct. It is for sure not NaCl. Furthermore, the comment with respect to Fe and FeO is a bit confusing as well. Buring the Fe to FeO creates the required heat (and consumes a part of the oxygen produced).
Electricity is passed through pure water. The water molecules split into oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The hydrogen is bled overboard, and the oxygen is bled into the ship's atmosphere..

That sounds silly. Submarines have many uses and are very effective. Also... have you ever tried to hit something that's a few hundred feet below the surface of the ocean and doesn't have to surface for 4 months? Good luck, LOL.
The oceans are like three times as big as all the continents put together. When they submerge, you can't track where they go. They're basically mobile invisible nuclear Armageddon launchers.
When's the last time someone sank a submarine in combat? Like 75 years ago? Back then, they could only stay submerged for about 2 days maximum.
Im pretty sure if one got hit by a modern torpedo it would be mission killed at the very least. The trick is to get out into open water and cruise around undetected. That is why there is a constant cat and mouse game between 'boomer' and 'attack' subs.

Up to date the Akula remains unmatched. Russians upgraded it secretly and it carries the Saturn 2. Few months ago it went missing from the rada. There Was panic amongst the western world. They started searching for it..they found it after it had surfaced, I just can't remember which ocean. The fact is the Akula gives cold shivers to the so called world super powers! They always want to keep it under their watchful eye.

First of all Only five Typhoons were ever built, second of all at this current time, only one of these subs has a reactor core and is able to even move itself by its own power. The other four are rusted out hunks of garbage rotting away in the Russian Naval Yard in Polyarny. They really aren’t a threat at all.

I believe they use compressed air to push it to the surface, before the rocket engine starts, in part to keep the sub safely away from the rocket when it lights off. In case it blows up.
Space ships use oxidizers to provide oxygen for the rockets.

Nuclear is very efficient, but Diesel-Electric is very quiet. In certain war scenarios, picking the Nuclear sub could lead to your demise and the diesel-electric would complete the mission.
not to mention the cheaper cost and faster build times, one nuclear sub cost about 5 diesel subs, war is a numbers game. best to have a mixed fleet
Nuclear is the quietest it gets. Diesels use combustion (basically mini explosions) which are super loud. A reactor after startup creates basically no sound.
@@kennethswanson2378 That’s exactly what I thought at first too, that diesel is loud, but apparently the quietest submarine is electric mode. I learned this from a old Navy Veteran onboard the HMAS Onslow.
@@kennethswanson2378 diesel subs uses diesel to charge their batteries. while operating under battery they are quieter than nuclear subs. When operating on batteries, diesel submarines are almost silent, with the only noise coming from the shaft bearings, propeller, and flow around the hull. Nuclear submarines require large reduction gears and a robust cooling system to maintain safe operation of the reactor. Noisy pumps circulate cooling water around the reactor core at all times, then pump the same cooling water back into the ocean, leaving nuclear submarines with a much larger infrared heat signature.
in a war time scenario, diesel fuel may be hard to come by. Nuclear power is the only option for long time reliability and operation.

Does anyone know how nuclear energy can be used to produce thrust in space? I figure this is what will be needed to space travel beyond our solar system. Someone chime in please.
Ion thrusters paired with nuclear energy is a thing, though they really only work properly with quite small spacecraft like specific satellites, as ion thrusters produce insanely small amount of thrust. But they are insanely effecient, and the thrust piles up with distance.

I don't know, but I think the Mars rovers are nuclear powered. Converted to electricity, obviously.
If you want to convert nuclear energy to thrust, I think there's a way to use it to convert water into fuel and use that for thrust. I don't know the details. Something with hydrogen and oxygen, I guess.

From what I know nuclear engines would use uranium to make heat and then burn the liquid hydrogen to a gas and expel it to make thrust. That's not the electrical way though, I'm just talking about normal nuclear power not more modern ion engines, ion-nuclear engines work differently. They use xenon and well electricity (look up sources for more details since last time I saw a source was months ago so I don't remember much) to expel current, and I think nuclear power plays some sort of role in that, there's a video called "How nuclear propulsion can take us to mars" it has all the details
This is the result of not being able to keep the size of your "rocket" motors down. Typhoon had to be large in order to accommodate large missiles with their large rocket motors.

Even though the reactors keep the sub running but upto a certain level the sub is still in danger . Under some study it was concluded that since ww2 somewhere around 200 tonnes of nuclear cargo has sunk to the depths of the oceans . Even 1 small error could lead to a disaster . The torpedo , reactor chamber and the missile launch systems are highly guarded . Coz these places carry highy dangerous machines .
These subs are costly and the only problem with them is that not all countries are nuclear fuel efficient. Take india as an example . We dont have enough uranium reserves to even give power to our NPPs . And this is the reason why being so engrossed into development . We still rely on diesel subs .
Submarines cost money 💰 and not all countries are economically efficient . An average sindhu class sub costs around 20 or 2 billion USD . Nuclear fuel again raises the cost coz of its low availability. Funfact-the earth only has 80 years of uranium left .

I thought they are down to only one operating Typhoon and a new class has replaced it called the Borei class. As an ex- U.S. Naval Aircrewman that hunted submarines from the sky for a living, this is the first time I heard of them trying to build more Typhoons. Does anyone have anything (article or video) to back this up?
As far as I remember, there were supposed to be seven such submarines in total. Six had already been built and the seventh was on the stocks. Then an agreement was signed on the reduction of strategic weapons, under the terms of which Russia disposed of three of the six submarines already built and the one that was on the stocks. Two of the three remaining went into storage in the reserve. Only one has been upgraded.
