If we are to look at Christianity, it encourages fear, as well. The Mayan calendar simply ends, though I doubt I believe it to be the end of the world, depending. Those who believe they know what is about to happen to the world say that it will be the Apocalypse, that Revelation is about to be fulfilled to the fullest. Regardless of who God is, the loving and just God would encourage us to take care of the house he built for his children before throwing up his hands and condemning us.
