Please explain your logic for using half of a steady rest when hollowing.

The steady rest used in this video is a Oneway bowl steady rest and I’ve got a link in the description box if you’re interested.
I use this steady rest specifically to back up the cut on larger bowls and some shorter vessels. Supporting the wood this way stops nearly all the vibration and chatter which make getting a smooth cut nearly impossible. The design of this particular steady rest also makes repositioning the rest quick and easy.
Obviously, an asymmetrical steady rest won’t hold up the end of a deep vessel when the tailstock can’t be used. And it probably won’t do much to stop a long thin spindle from whipping around like a jump rope. However, for it’s intended purpose this rest has been invaluable.
      Thanks for your question.
