  • Hey everyone! I'm Aja Dang and after an entire year of budgeting and paying off debt, I finally put together a How To Budget video. I didn't want to go too in depth into budgeting for those beginners - I didn't want to scare, overwhelm or confuse you. So hopefully these basic tips will teach you how to make a budget and save money.

    Hey everyone! I wanted to make this video as simple as possible (without scaring some new budgeters) but I do want to add some answers that I feel you all might ask:
    1. I paid off my loans from smallest debt to largest. It didn't matter what the interest rate was. Paying off debts smallest to largest has allowed me to feel the confidence of paying off loans, which has driven me throughout the process. But you do you.
    2. I don't do a zero-based budget (meaning you have given e.v.e.r.y. single cent of your money a place to go before the month ends.) As a freelancer, that makes me really uncomfortable as my income isn't guaranteed. So any income left after completing my budget is thrown to my loans and then I keep a little cushion in my bank account every month. That "cushion" really depends on how confident I feel about the amount I'm getting paid next.
    3. I also have a $10,000 emergency fund. Dave Ramsey suggests $1,000 but again, as a freelancer, I've had months where I wasn't paid ANYTHING. zero. So this emergency fund + the cushion I leave in my account each month, makes me comfortable enough to throw as much money I can towards my student loans.
    I think that's it!

      Girl, your intent is pure but please tell me these are not real numbers on your budget. My concern is that you can become a target for thieves.

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  5 лет назад +52

      @@brittneyoquendo7018 I've been using real numbers since Jan 2018. Not going to be one of those RUclipsrs who talk about budgeting but don't show the whole story. Thanks for your concern, but since they know all my money is going to debt vs. bags/cars/clothes - there is literally nothing of value they can steal from me lol. I think I'll be ok.

      $1000 for an emergency fund seems really low to me even as someone who is not a freelancer and has the same income every two weeks. There are so many emergencies which could easily add up to more than that. I think you have the right idea with your number.

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  5 лет назад +13

      @@HecticSophie do whatever you're comfortable with. I find that when you're comfortable with your emergency fund, the more aggressive you can pay off your debt

    This video was so great, it made complete sense! I am a 19 year old college student in NYC. There's the joke that it costs $100 just to step outside in New York, but it is really true. I was lucky enough to learn about financial literacy in high school , however I still make mistakes. I stopped budgeting last year and by the end of the semester when I realized I had only $200 in my savings, I decided to take a look at my bank statements- you're so right, it's terrifying! I had spent over $2000 shopping and eating out in just 3 months. It was a real wake up call and strongly encourage people to look at their own! Starting the New Year I am making it my mission to be more diligent with budgeting again, this video clearly explained your process and I was able to take a lot from it. And she is very right about budgets being customized, they are different for everyone. Listen to Aja, she knows her stuff! Again, great video!!

      Congrats to you for realizing it early on! One thing you have is TIME! I realized my spending habits as well, but not until 1 year after graduating college! I had my fun, but quickly regretted every poor purchase decision I made. Spreadsheets are so great to see all of your money laid out right in front of you, it definitely hits different!

    It sucks that I make a lot less working as an intern and going to school full time. I got a second job because my first income simply isn’t enough to cover all of my rent, utilities, car insurance, and dog food expenses. Girl I am struggling but at least I know where each penny is going.

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  5 лет назад +26

      I'm sorry you're struggling girl but at least you're being responsible with what you have. A couple things: when I was in school, I was a resident adviser, and that gave me free room and board. Maybe look into that for the next year? Also, I learned this a couple months into my journey, I was working about 5 different income revenue streams and I was really burning out. Then I decided to drop the ones that weren't making me a ton of money and focus on the ones that did. Have you thought about looking at other income options that help you cover costs and allow you to only take on one job?

    • @mariep1998
      @mariep1998 5 лет назад +7

      Aja Dang My rent increased significantly after one of my roommates decided to move out right after we renewed our contract (wasn’t prepared for that tbh) but I’m hoping that my internship at an investment firm will pay off in the long run so I get better paying opportunities once it’s over. I think right now I just have to sacrifice my time working that second job so that I can cover my expenses 😅

    I really enjoy these videos, Aja. Seeing how you organize your finances and tackle your debt has given me some ideas for what might possibly work for me. I recently set up a separate account for set expenses (my monthly and semi-annual/annual amounts, from the huge things like rent, to the smaller ones like iCloud storage). I tallied up what I needed to set aside for those per month and halved it, because I get paid every two weeks. I have that amount direct deposited into my expense account, and then the rest goes into my regular checking for groceries, eating out, etc.
    Having a pool of money to draw from that grows larger and larger if I don't spend it as really helped me curb my impulse purchases, and at the end of the month I just throw whatever I have left in there toward the car loan I'm trying to pay off (I have the same emergency fund you do).
    Watching your journey has been really inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  5 лет назад +1

      I totally agree with you on how you did that. Having a pool of money sit in your account (even if you know where it's gonna go eventually) is so tricky with your budget! Just having it there can screw up everything. Glad you found what works for you

    You’re budget videos are so inspiring and have pushed me to make my own RUclips videos on how I’m paying off my student loans while saving for a deposit for a home! My approach involves a very simple budgeting tactic which helped me pay for part of education while I was getting my civil engineering undergrad. I like to calculate my expenses, give myself a weekly allowance to spend on food and anything else I want to purchase and then whatever is left goes straight to savings. I’d love for you to take a look at my most recent video and give me your opinion on my budget and see if you think my weekly allowance is too high, I feel like I’m too harsh with my budget at times! Thanks for sharing your journey 💕 Naomi Latimer

    I love watching your money related videos! I am doing a no-spend year for 2019 so I need all the motivation I can get! I am excited to see how much money I can save using the no spend year (I'm competitive af so I want to get my savings account as high as possible ahah). 2019 will also be my last year at university so I really want to have a large amount saved before I go out into "the real world" haha. I already have a decent amount saved since I have had the habit of savings since a young age, but recently my spending has got out of hand so I am doing the challenge to get myself back on track. I will graduate with student loans but I am insanely lucky that in my country student loans are interest free which is a lifesaver (I still want to pay it off as soon as I can though)

By documenting my journey on my channel, it’s been helpful keeping me accountable, but when having setbacks like this uhhh it can be disheartening. Just seems like I can never get it right. Love the step by step process! 👍🏽 great vid!

      Aja Dang that would be awesome! Or even making a video of the different apps you use to archive your financial goals. For me personally, I was having a bit of a hard time understanding where exactly are the “goals” being saved or kept.. is it in my checking accounts or the Qapital account ? And also the spending account, how is it different than my checking account? Thank you!! ♥️
