  • 12 years after my last visit and it is just as windy. The lens has gone and was replaced in early 2020 by the LED lamp that can be seen.
Whales have been seen off the coast here. Careful with the car park- see Trip Advisor.

Why does “progress” have to be so boring? There’s something hypnotic about the old lenses slowly rotating.

Shame they took the old lenses out and replaced them with this

Recently I found out that this lighthouse can be seen all the way from Moretonhampstead, about 21-ish miles away inland as the crow flies - And that's if you stand in the right field, on the right hill, and look down the valley through all the hilly terrain in exactly the right spot. :)
Stood in a field last month to see the planets "line up" and noticed a flashing in the far distance. I looked at 3D Google Maps to trace the line of sight from my observation point. This video confirms that the flashing pattern is the same - It is this lighthouse I can see, so thanks.
Say what you will about LED technology, it's a shame the old fresnel lenses are gone, but it is effective.

21 miles inland is impressive. The furthest one I have seen was Bardsey- viewed from the top of Holyhead Mountain at dusk with binoculars, map and compass. 45 miles! Wont see that now with LED.

So sad to see the iconic lens gone and replaced by an LED! They've done the same at Portland Bill as well.

More to come yet. St Catherines next.

Love the Fresnel lens. Here in Ireland many locals protested about the removal of the traditional optics and thankfully Irish Lights have decided to use a new ball bearing system after the removal of mercury to retain the heritage of the lighthouse.
