Dungeness 5 fog horn: 26 minutes of Tannoy fog horn

  • Dungeness 5 lighthouse was built in 1961 and incorporated at the top 60 built in fog signal emitters. These had previously been tested on site at the near by Experimental Station (there is still a Tannoy fog signal there consisting of six large units. I never heard these in operation and closer inpectin show only the wires were cut at the back so easily soundable with the right amount of power). Tannoy was the company who provided the units, hense the name. There was an alternator at the base of the tower which provided ac power for the Tannoy, although I do have a recording of it, it is just a quiet hum. As you'll hear, Dungeness 5 had a fog horn character of 3 blasts every 60 seconds. That continued after the Tannoy was decomissioned in the late 1990s and replaced with a Honeywell 300hz emitter. In 2022, that was also replaced with a much quieter, high pitched emitter and character changed to 1 blast every 30 seconds. It gets plenty of useage.
The Tannoy's have since been removed and the openings plated over.
This recording was taken from the base of the tower. No echo can be heard as is often the case with fog. The Tannoy horns at Tater Du, Anvil Point, Lunmouth Foreland, South Bishop and Strumble Head sounded very similar. St Anne's, South Stack, Lundy North and Bardsey had Tannoy's but produced a much sharper note. Tannoys were also installed at St Bees and North Stack but I never heard these.
All pictures on this video are my own, taken over the years on many visits to delightful Dungeness.

WOW, i was researching this for a very very very long time !!!
After the "St Anns Fog Signal" (ruclips.net/video/U48cCQ7XAnM/видео.html) now Dungeness, this is amazing !!
What a shame for the discontinuation of these type of Fog Horn Signal.
After a quick analysis thru a frquency spectrum, for those who want to recreate this Fog Horn sound, try these frequency : 385Hz + 535Hz + 675Hz
Thanks you very much for the upload !!!

400Hz, 550Hz and 700Hz at 100w per emitter. However this was recorded from the base of the tower on tape, and quality may have further declined when transferring to digital. The Museum of Internal Fire in Wales have the Tannoy's from Strumble Head and were (pre Covid) planning on getting something up and running, although a little quieter.

Do you have many fog horn recordings?

      Yes.

@@hellooldchap I'm assuming you will be posting them all in the not too distant future? As a lighthouse attendant with the Commissioners of Irish lights fog horns are fascinating pieces of engineering and machinery

Would take a long time to create and I would not want to make RUclips too boring! Some like the ELG300s sound the same and like at Flamborough, sounded every 90 secs which would make a long video a bit dull. I want to get Pendeen's siren done as that was every 30 secs and sounded different to other siren horns as the siren was already spinning when air was let into the chamber. Lizard has a nice whoop to it but some video's already held of that. Flatholm/Nash siren sounded similar so might do one of them. Tater Du tannoy sounds the same as Dungeness- I missed the electric omnidirectional one there as it cleared up just as I was going down the steps! Trevose maybe for a Supertyfon as that was (2) 30 sec.
CIL and NLB sadly fell silent about 10 years ago.

Wait was this live or a recreation?

Nope. That is how it was back then, since it was built to the late 90s.
