  • I try and start my ST170 powered FORD CAPRI for the first time. It's seems like it's been forever since I first started this engine conversion but it's nearly time for the moment of truth. After going through the wiring of the motorsport electronics NODIZ ecu I try to start it for the first time.
    0:00 ST170 is nearly ready
    1:27 Motorsport Electronics NODIZ ecu
    2:35 Temporary starting switches
    4:18 Will it start?
    6:47 How does it run
8:51 Moving on to the rust issues!!

Hi,your going to have to rejet those cards my friend as they will run weak and hot at revs as they are jetted for 600cc not 1600 .. Great to see another capri ... hi from Dublin.

Your right. The carbs came with the engine which was installed in a mk1 Mexico. So they probably have been re jetted already but I need to take them off and check.

The Capri (assuming it was a 2.8i Cologne ) is now up to 144Kgs lighter than a Focus ST170 by curb weight, and the Duratec is itself lighter than the Cologne by about 50Gks (maybe 200Kgs saving overall?). It should be a fairly fast accelerating car for the 1980s - Guessing 0 - 60 in 6.8 seconds (happy if it is even quicker!)

I’m excited to feel the difference!! Should be plenty quick enough for me!! Also has the 1.6litre diff

Nice progress on the engine install, sounds like you just need to sort out some tuning issues to get it dialed in.

Cheers!! It felt good to finally hear it running!! I agree I’m going to dismantle and clean the carb and then when it’s back driving take it to a rolling road see if everything’s ok as it seems a bit rich at the moment

Very nice engine choice as a four pot Capri. The original V6 Essex only gave about 140 bhp back in the day so a 170 lump should be perfectly fine. Q: what attracted you to use the very nice bike carbs instead of injectors?

It was down to cost really. I got the carbs as part of a complete package with engine, v6 gearbox, exhaust manifold, ecu and all the rwd bits. To get the throttle bodies on top of that as well as swirl pots etc would cost quite a bit more and although it would be a little better I felt like it would be better to put that money towards another roadtrip when I’m finished.

Mate whatever you do don’t put a cover on it if it’s got rained on! Quickest way to dissolve a car!

I’ve put the shelter back up so it keeps me dry while I tackle this bodywork. It feels like it’s been a really wet summer this year in the north west

@@missioncapri very wise, as long as there’s plenty of air passing through to dry out all the hidden bits.. (I had a friend that was a chef on oil rigs. He wrapped his MGB up really well stored on his old Mum’s front drive for eight years and when he finally came back long enough to get it out again it had 50% dissolved..)☹️
