I mean, people were angry af that The Weeknd canceled mid-show because his VOICE went out. Like he literally couldn’t sing and people were pissed at him. He came out to face 70k people and told them what happened, which I respect him so much for. He was in tears walking off the stage. He promised them refunds and a new show. They all got refunds and TWO new shows to close out his tour. People still wanted refunds for food, beer, travel expenses, and MERCH which is the stupidest one. Many of them said he should just lip sync. Which he would never do, therefore they weren’t set up for something like that. Just using this as an example of how ridiculous and demanding fans can be of these artists, as if they aren’t human and shit doesn’t happen. I will say that it doesn’t help that Ronnie has had to cancel quite a few shows this tour. But again, after three years of not playing live because of the pandemic, I’m giving all these artists a lot more room to get back into the groove of things before I become super critical.

I was using backing and click tracks 8 years ago in church bands because no, we didn't have a full orchestra but it sounded like we did. None of the guitars, drums, or vocals were in the tracks.
It helped us practice and sound more professional because that's what they wanted. It wasn't a cop-out, it actually made us sound better.
It also made it painfully obvious when we weren't on beat.

14 years ago I saw Manowar perform a record breaking 5 hour show in my country. It was all kinds of awesome, but there were a lot of technical problems - one of them was when the backing track with Orson Welles' voice that they used for "Defender" didn't start on time for some reason, so they had to stop and start playing the song from the beginning.
I said it under your previous video covering this matter, and I'll say it again - people who complain about backing tracks often have no idea what they're talking about. No, Metallica don't bring a child actor on stage for "Enter Sandman". No, Manowar can't raise Orson Welles from the dead for "Defender" or "Dark Avenger". (Also, during their tour in 2019, Manowar had a keyboardist for their shows in Europe, but he couldn't go to Mexico, so they used a backing track for his parts. Just mentioning.) No, epic power metal bands don't bring full orchestras in the clubs they perform in. No, Iron Maiden don't bring a voice actor on stage to read that passage from The Book of Revelations in the beginning of "The Number of the Beast". And so on. If you hear something that is not on stage, it is likely a backing track - and there is nothing wrong with this, as long as the backing track isn't there to replace the performance.

As a pure consumer of music (or non-musician) I really don't care how a live show becomes the awesome experience that I love to have. If they use tracks or whatever to get a crowd having fun with them then that's how it is. And if a band says that they can't produce a certain feeling at their live shows without certain equipment and feeling themselves something it's missing, then I think it's okay to say "nope, can't do it". Sure, it's bad for me, since I don't get my concert at this specific day, but I rather wait for another time to see the bands I want to see with their best performance possible.
Modern concerts are way beyond just instruments and amplifiers. In my opinion concerts are more a place for a musical experience that includes more than just the music itself (lights, the band interacting with the crowd etc). If I just want "the music" I can listen to that at home. But at a concert/show I want to experience more than that.

For example AC/DC does bring their "bell" sometimes with them, but when they start playling "Hell's Bells", that bell doesn't do the sound. Or take maybe M.I.A. with "Paper planes" and the cashier box sound that's a central element of the song. Or think of Eminem with "Stan" - that rain sound is iconic and not that easily replicated in an analog way.

Bands can work without all those backing tracks, but depending on what kind of a concert a band wants to show, the kind of experience the band wants their audience to feel, the backing tracks are a must have. The example you gave, "Hurt", works really good as an simple acoustic version. But a song like "Zombified", for example, must have the backing tracks to fulfill the ambience the song originally has. I have actually wondered about some of my favorite artists when they have a violin or keyboard part/intro/bridge and thought "well it won't sound like that at a live show because they're not going to have a keyboard player or violinist accompanying them on tour for those tiny little bits." I never even thought about those parts being backing tracks! It makes sense now how a band like Orbit Culture or Amon Amarth can sound so much like their albums live!!!!

Yes tracks have gone out mid show and yes bands had to adjust and keep going, but how did the quality of that song/show go? People lose their minds and bash bands when a scream is missed, or a solo sounds different. So you're supposed to walk in to a show knowing, no intros, no outros, back effects, zero time to rehearse an entirely new set, grenade your whole performance as a headliner? Ugh I can type for hours, but props to Ronnie for making the tough decision and telling the TRUTH about why. Also saw FIR in July, one of the best shows I have ever been to. I have no issues with bands using tracks. At the same time, I can't support a band cancelling as a festival headliner the day before the show because they lost their laptops with their tracks. The festival they signed a contract to play now has to deal with a horde of ticked off ticket buyers. The festival also has no chance to book an adequate replacement with such short notice. That hurts their reputation and can cost them repeat business. It's the band's responsibility to make sure their gear makes it to the next show. It's also the band's responsibility to make sure they have more than one backup for a piece of gear so integral to their show that they would have to consider cancelling if it failed or was lost. Instead of the band dealing with their negligence head on and playing without the tracks and putting their reputation on the line, they decided to save their own reputation at the expense of the festival's. Not cool.

Thanks for the counter, I totally understand and get your point. I had tickets to a concert at a casino for New Year’s Eve and the band canceled on the morning of the show. Its just the artists side versus the fans side. For this one I still gotta stay with FIR. You can always make it up to the venue and fans by doing another gig, maybe a bigger better one, cancelations happen all the time. You can’t un-do a crappy altered shortened show that you made fans pay to see. When you are at such an unbelievably high level of fans, views, and expectations I just don’t think you can serve up anything less than perfect. They only made the mistake of having no backups other than what the crew lost, they’ll never make it again I’m sure. 2 sides to that coin, but for old antique rockers to challenge their talent, creativity and call them not real musicians is petty and low. Numbers speak for themselves there.

You don't know what else they are using this technology for and if Ronnie says "driving a car without an engine" it sounds like A LOT. I actually like tracks at live shows. All of the times I've heard them, they've improved the show. Intro music, parts from albums that can't simply be replicated on stage, instruments that you'd just need for one song and therefore can't just bring another artist... So I don't mind at all.
Sure, lip synching would suck, but I missed that panic so I don't really expect that to happen.
A cool story about not using tracks where they were probably planned: In 2007 I saw Ensiferum live in Switzerland and their biggest song at that time was Victory Song. That song definetly needs a track, as a major part of it is instrumentals that are not guitars and it's a pretty long intro section of that. They were touring with Chthonic (from Taiwan, great band, check them out) and one of their members plays the Erhu (oriental two-string violin). So things happened and we got the intro from this Erhu instead of a track, changing the sound of it a lot (the Erhu sounds wery melancholic and sad), but also making it really, really great!

Sebastian Bach was part of an 80s hair band called Skid Row. If you listen to their music, they never used any type of backing tracks. Musically, it was simpler and less complex sounding. There big hit were "I Remember You" and "18 and Life". They were around during the Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal, which for those who didn't use baking tracks they think they are the samething they aren't. In comparison, Skid Rowe came out in 1989, Guns N Roses in 1985 used backing tracks. Def Leppard never used backing tracks until their drummer was in a car accident and lost his arm. Starting in 1984 when they were on tour they were using backing tracks to make their sound more stronger and more robust than what it was but if you also compare the music to before the accident and after you can also see how their sound changed as a whole. But Skid Rowe were purists and there's nothing wrong with that but not understanding how technology works is kind of unexcusable. Without backing tracks Queen would have never of been able to perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" live, there are about 180 vocal dubs in that song. Extremely impressive, for the day and by today's standards as well.

I think the point about "real bands", Aerosmith, etc.. was that even if those bands use backing tracks too, if something went wrong, they could still manage to put on a show without it. They wouldn't just cancel as that being the only solution. Old school (Sebastian) feels like new school (Ronnie) relies so much on studio and digital effects that a lot of their sound comes from technology itself instead of actual talent. I think that was Sebastian's argument and why he was focusing on vocals and all that. Todays bands rely heavily on technology for just about every song and there's nothing wrong with that. It's not like loosing the data on your laptop and hitting restore and a little while later, there's your stuff. But even with those backups and restores, something inevitably goes wrong and most people end up with something missing. Also the replacement laptops have to be very robust, they look like regular laptops but there's a lot more power in those laptops then your regular laptop has and even more so than a gamers laptop even has. Then there's the amount of software that has to be loaded onto those laptops and the data as a whole. They had a 24 hour window, there is no way it could have happened.

Dave Mustaine of Metallica is 100% against backing tracks and has stated it numerous times so it doesn't surprise me that Cannibal Corpse doesn't use them either. Dave Mustaine has stated that he doesn't mind them being used like for the amps and equipment but not for the singing or the musicians. When they play live bring in musicians like for the background vocals and maybe an extra guitarist or two to bring more sound to the music like it has when you listen to it on the album. Sebastian Bach from Skid Row is of this mindset as well. But this is music and it's not 1 way or the highway. If Queen used technically to their advantage, then anyone can. Without backing tracks Queen would not have been able to perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" live, there are about 180 vocal dubs to make 4 men sound like a choir of 40.
I've been to many concerts both with and without backing tracks and I love them all. Let the music free!

The disconnect is definitely in the idea of what the tracks are, as you mentioned. They generally aren't the vocals or guitars/bass or drums. Can understand people being miffed if maybe only a percentage of the live performance was actually live. At a certain point it could seem like to concert goers that they are pretty much just listening to an album being played in a live setting. But by in large that is not the case. I know the Chevelle mentioned that they do not use backing tracks and do not include anything in their album tracks that they cannot do live. Have no problem with that if that is their thing..and of course that is just one example. This was actually a conversation for this band as we started adding programmed tracks to our songs. We discussed whether or not people seeing us live would have an issue with it. Even if we included a computer running a DAW and added a member to play the parts that are backing on a midi keyboard...many of the tracks are multilayered using several virtual instruments and would require more than two hands playing two controllers. Just not very possible logistically. So we could play without the tracks live but the experience wouldn't be the same. I can't imagine Electric Callboy without tracks...use of song intros and segues. And we all know that Kevin can play everything but do we want him tied to keyboard (even though he is playing one in the Fuck Boi video) ? Fully back you on this one Tank! The 'argument' here isn't even valid because one side's stance is way off-base.

This is like "my amp isn't turning on" and you have no backups.
The disconnect is people think when you use tracks, you aren't playing for real and giving a true live show. Think like a MTV video where you aren't playing. Perfect example is the movie Airheads when they get their chance to perform on stage but they aren't plugged in and they want them to fake it. That's what people think of when you say they are using tracks.
That said, I agree with Wolfgang Van Halen when he said in an interview, "you should be able to play your shit". If you write it and it's on the album you should know how to play it, that's not debatable for me. Extra fluff like intro noises and whatnot doesn't matter to me, the actual ability to play the instruments and sing is what does.

I can kind of see both sides, the thought of backing tracks in an actual band with instruments strikes me as very weird and should be unnecessary, but if that's how they do it who cares. I will say that cancelling a performance over it is a bit of a bitch move, there would have been people who spent money to see them and they were owed a show.

I'm a dad of 3 little ones so it's been probably nearing a decade since I've been able to go to a show/festival/concert whatever you prefer to call them and one thing I have always said is when you are going to an event you are going for entertainment and if there is something that makes that entertainment more enjoyable, sound better, look better, all that good stuff, then use it. The fans want the best time of there lives when they go to a show and there is nothing wrong with giving the fans the most you can give.....This really seems like a whole my generation was better than yours because we had it "harder" or "we didn't need all that technology". If you have a "tool" that makes something work better or makes your product better....then why would you not use it? I get being stuck in "your ways" but why should other musicians have to do things exactly the way "you do or did" in order for it to be "real".

Why do Millennials call anyone older than them "boomers". Bach is Gen X. I think there is a major difference in thought process about a concert and the point of it - Gen X and older don't want the music to sound exactly like it is off the album since we can just stay at home and here that. Freddie Mercury even made a comment about this in his time. We want the energy, we want that raw feeling. I think the younger generation cares more about seeing the performing as evidence by everyone viewing the show through their phones and hearing people talk when I watch live shows filmed with phones on RUclips. I think the younger generation cares more about saying they were there than actually being there - as in being in the moment.

As far as backing tracks are concerned, if a band is using them for these reasons listed below, I have no problem:
    - Orchestral/symphonic sections that cannot be duplicated (like Nightwish and Epica does for example)
    - Choirs (Nightwish, Epica, and many other symphonic metal acts do this as well)
    - Certain “interlude” type tapes (like Metallica does for certain songs that start off like like “Damage, Inc.”, “Fight Fire with Fire”, “Blackened”, etc. for instance or Queen for “Bohemian Rhapsody”)
    - Synth parts where a keyboard player isn’t present (Sabaton and Static-X comes to mind)
If it’s for reasons where you have a vocal track playing in the background or additional guitar parts or anything like that while the music is still playing (e.g. Bring Me the Horizon, Mötley Crüe), that I find lame. It makes live shows feel disingenuous/unnatural if you have to heavily rely on tracks instead of not having an additional rhythm guitarist or not having any other band member sing backing vocals.

    • @monsterram6617
      @monsterram6617 2 года назад +4

Sounds more like pretentious music snobbery tbh. I mean why draw the line at backup vocalists or rhythm guitars? Your argument could be applied the things you listed. Why not go and find a choir, orchestra, or learn to play the interlude parts instead of disingenuously and unnaturally replacing them with tracks? And what about keyboards should make them exempt from these rules? This is an instrument just a legitimate as a guitar or anything else yet you think it's okay to replace them with a track... but not a rhythm guitar or backup vocals? Weird, that doesn't make sense. Have you ever seen a solo artist that uses tracks for the entire song except the instrument they play and their vocals? You must really hate them!

    • @markjames8664

Many bands just can’t afford to have another musician on tour. If you have one guitarist you need backup tracks for rhythm parts in some songs. I do value it when a band can keep going when their backing track system fails, but this does depend on the type of band and the specific songs.

everything i do uses tracks (drum programming/samples, synthesizers/sound effects, sometimes guitar tracks i play the opposite parts to, bass tracks, etc.) and if my method for it goes down, i cannot do em. i've been using a USB drive on a Roland synthesizer since 2011 to do this. i cannot think of one person, let alone 6 people, who could recreate all the various things i do in the recording phase on a stage to an audience without it sounding massively different every single night. the one band that got me interested in technology that got to this point used tape decks as early as 1988, and has had tape deck malfunctions/tape melts in their career before shifting to digital platforms for playback. one of my favorite local bands used an ADAT rig for stuff they recorded at Indigo Ranch. the last band i played in uses a laptop and triggers. HOW is it so hard to understand that technology is pivotal to many groups who started out or grew with it? Hell, I legit hope one day before I turn 50 that I get to do a big tour and witness massive laptop failure mid-show, and replace it with a back-up. I side with Ronnie on this matter. I want a show that delivers how the band wants to deliver. I want to deliver a show that reflects what I do. I want more people to do as they see necessary for their bands, even if it's with a giant rig that uses some giant 64+ bus Dante interface. just make the music you want, and do it live how you see it fits that moment. stop getting lost in the fallacies and go kill it on stage for 3+ months every year until you retire.

Yeah, agreed 100%. Any professional band of a certain caliber should have all of these things saved on a desktop at their home base and have identical (or near, maybe their older gear) laptops already loaded-up with these shows and ready to be fedexed or couriered to the show location. I mean, if it’s something that can shut-down a show entirely, it’s a “mission critical” piece of gear, as opposed to something like a guitar that can be got at a music store in whatever city. I’m sure they’ll adjust accordingly, but the blow-back here seems misplaced: the issue isn’t the computers and tracks, it’s that these guys let so much hinge on something irreplaceable when we know things go “missing” on tours all the time.

To be honest, I had no idea that whole bands were using backing tracks during live performances. I’ve seen club musicians using them, but am surprised that they’re also used in bigger venues and acts. Many times tracks are laid down in studios by different musicians than the actual bandmates. So if you go to see a live performance with a backing track, you may not actually be listening to the band’s guitarist or drummer, etc... something like that would kind of be a hybrid performance not an actual live show. There’s no problem with that just as long as the audience knows and there isn’t a lot of fakery going on. Say what you want about the old-school metalheads but today, artists often can barely sing their own lines. They bring other people in and then take credit for the vocal. In the 60s and 70s, even into the 80s, those artists sang all their lines and were perfectly in tune, no auto tune. And they recorded on tape. I believe these digital tools are great but there’s no comparison to the level of skill and talent that you’d find a few decades back.
