Well, Sidon is younger than Mipha. If a player wasn’t aware they are siblings, they could’ve mistaken him for her son when they saw his child self in The Champions’ Ballad or Age of Calamity.
Link did grew up close to her so even if he didn't romantically love her, he probably thought of her as a very special childhood friend or maybe like family.
Exactly, even if it wasn't romance she was there for him when he was a child to such an extent that she may have been his surrogate mother. Which opens up his side of things into an Oedipus complex. But let's not go there.
Something else to note, this memory is set apart from all the others and is particularly special, because in every memory he recovered except this one, he had to physically go to the same location the memory took place. For this one, all he needed was a statue built in her likeness. I think this suggests that his memory of her has a higher sentimental value hence why it took less effort to remember
@@cajunking5987 it is, because that statue was not there at the time he remembered her, and furthermore, the memory was not at that location: it was on the divine beast. That means he recovered the memory from her likeness, not the location.
@@cajunking5987 perhaps, but here is why it's more advanced than the other memories: technically, no surviving relic of his memory triggered it. It was only a statue. Here's why that matters: In all of the other memories, there is something tangible still standing that has survived 100 years, and he's not just recognizing familiarity, he is recognizing the exact landscape which is still partially there. Like the castle memory for instance: that part of the castle is still intact, and is the exact same place where it happened. He's not remembering what it generally looked like, he's remembering what it exactly was because he was seeing the same garrison again with his own eyes. To be on the same level of cognitive reaching would be the same thing as somebody making a painting of the castle, and Link regaining the memory by looking at the painting. Nothing like this has ever happened except in the Mipha memory, where he is looking at an object that did not exist at the time which reminds him of an entirely different area where the memory took place, based solely on general likeness and not a surviving intact relic.
@@devildogkogg8353 ah the painting analogy actually makes a good point because the sheikah slate’s album isn’t enough to help his memory so I get what you mean now
2:44 Something I love about Breath of the Wild is how free it is in even the little things. I had the Zora armor on throughout the entire main conversation so when Muzu demanded proof that Link meant something to Mipha, I didn't have to do anything and Sidon just seamlessly responded with "Well, look at how well it fits him now!" That might be a little thing to some, but I really liked that, especially because I didn't initially realize I completed a requirement, the game just played on.
I was a bit biased because Mipha was my first real videogame love, but I wore that dang armor near the moment I got it, and it was one of the first ones I got upgraded. helps that it's a sick armor set as well.
@@AttacMage Same here! I love Mipha and basically everything about the Zora Domain. Sidon is the best companion and friend Link can have. In TOTK I visited Zora's Domain first and put an emphasis on displaying the Zora weapons in my dream home.
i found interesting that in english it’s “grace”. i bought my botw in spanish and the word used is “plegaria” which is a prayer special where you’re asking for something in return of being so devote. i feel like that definition fits mipha better
@@REDFRLegend In French, it's La Prière de Mipha, which also literally translates to Mipha's prayer. I don't really see why they have chosen "grace" in the english version.
True! That is not Grace. Grace is being given something that you do not deserve nor can not earn. In Zeldas case it was bribery... "Oh I've done this, now you do that." That's NOT Grace.
I love Mipha so much. She’s my favorite champion. Out of Link’s love in this game I’d always wondered how he’d felt about Mipha & Zelda. These women obviously love him, and I believe that’s how Zelda accessed her power; but I want to know his perspective.
I’ve always liked Mipha and hated that seemingly everyone around me thinks shes a shallow love interest for Link. Knowing the translation is so helpful and makes so much more sense. The English version always felt like it was missing something or off.
What? Pretty sure everyone liked mipha. Everyone hated zelda because this was the worse reincarnation of any zeldas. Only reason why anyone even liked zelda was cause she was "thick" but besides that she was just annoying in this game.
That's translation for you. You'd never get a full word for word translation, especially because English and Japanese are so far apart from each other. Had it been English from German it would have been different. English derived from the Germanic languages.
@@kookou13 reincarnation??? How when names are often reused in dynasties and families. Link was the same. These were common names because of their history and tied to Heros that came before each of them. In a way honouring them, keeping their memory alive. Not because they were somehow reborn as different ppl.. that's ridiculous.
The English version made Mipha sound like a lovesick child, just doing things to get Links attention whereas the Japanese version made her a hero, doing things because she wants to and knows its the right thing to do. 😪 so frustrating that they changed it so much.
Yeah thats why I didn't like mipha at all playing the game. She seemed so childish. And I wished she wasn't such I boring character or would just get out of the way. I was frustrated playing the game for the first time because I didn't like how Nintendo made links love interest so boring
@@leethestar6421 Paya was the only one that was actually great at being just a cardboard cutout of a love interest. When you read Paya's diary there's text that says "must not look must not look" it's probably Link not wanting to read Paya greatly exaggerating his looks and describing his features in great detail. Probably karma from Hylia because of him reading everyone's diary.
In English the closest word to that we have IS Grace. Grace can also mean a prayer and sometimes instead of “saying a prayer” we “say grace”. Grace is also something that is given in kindness or goodwill. So I think other good translations besides “Mipha’s Grace” would be “Mipha’s Kindness”, “Mipha’s Goodwill”, or “Mipha’s Prayer” (which I think was mentioned).
I've been writing a lot with Mipha lately and I feel SO VALIDATED learning that she actually was more bold about actively wanting to protect him, and Link reciprocating feelings the way that he does, even if it's understated, it matches the personality vibes I was getting. My god she got watered down in translation though! Thank you for putting in the work, this game's emotional writing deserved so much better and you're helping do it a bit more justice
I felt the same way with the translations! Her personality in the English version of the game feels a little off to me. She sounds as if she feels she has to devote herself to her duty to protect Hyrule, because it's her mission or something. However, that's not entirely true. She really does want to protect everyone (including Link) from the bottom of her heart. She's constantly searching for things she can do to make an impact, because she wants (and chooses to).
@@QuestWithAaron @QuestWithAaron Exactly!! It feels a bit like the difference between someone pressured to go into medical school by their parents vs. someone with a genuine passion for the science and love of helping people (with a few uncomfortable ego-fanservice tropes thrown in, and only made worse by the dub u_u;; thanks for forcing the waifu vibes guys) When you're able to look deeper, she actually had feelings and desires and interests!! She had depth but unfortunately we had to dig for it! But again, I just really super appreciate the video, it's so well edited and organized. You're really out here doing the most good for us who can't translate for ourselves, and you did a great job!
To this day, I do not understand why they took Link’s diary away from the English version, or why some of the translations are so skewed. I so love that Mipha says she and Ruta will offer protection rather than support. It’s a nuanced difference, but I feel it fits much better. I do like the name of her power in English, though. I am happy to know the added meaning of the Japanese translation, but “Mipha’s Grace” captures so much to me. It is as though her whole being is poured into her power. It is her grace, her blessing, her loving care, her heart’s wish, her prayer for Link-grace gives life, and so too does Mipha. It was always apparent to me, even in the English version, that Link gains those extra hearts through the strength of her love.
I have a video coming out about why the adventure log changed between versions later this month, along with extra details and a collection of all the entries translated! Absolutely! I believe that "grace" is a powerful word that captures every essence of Mipha's character. I think that the Japanese counterpart is more streamlined and soley focuses more on and directly emphasises that wish element instead.
Well, if you've played Age of Calamity and you've played the mission Heart's Escort, then you know what I'm saying here. But I won't say it in case anyone doesn't want any spoilers, but those who know just know.
I really want Nintendo to freaking LEAVE THE ADVENTURE JOURNAL WRITTEN BY LINK in the sequel!!! It gives him SO much personality! If you get all of the memory photos Link's entry for the Calamity Ganon entry will say "I want to see her (Zelda) smile once more"
Well it isn't Nintendo of Japan's fault. It's Nintendo of America's translation team fault in the matter. They believed that link still to this day is the player's proxy character in the world of Zelda. If they could've left Link's journal entries intact it would've been a fresh way of updating and immersing a player into the role of link instead you being link. If that makes sense.
@TheGhostlyGamer I would think it would be understood that I was talking about Nintendo of America since it's the English version of the game I'm talking about. I didn't need you to explain it, and I didn't ask for it either.
@Random Shade on the internet and? You'd think one would be aware that an explanation isn't needed in this case. I didn't need to be "educated" on something literally everyone knows. And context clue of my original comment should have told this guy that I was referring to the English version not the Japanese one. But his desire to prove he is smart (?) Overrode that
After seeing some videos like this talk about the Japanese translations of Zelda games I'm starting to think that they should be taken as the cannon of the series since it's the original language the games are made for and they are quite a bit more in depth when it comes to story and lore.
@@landon1812 I appreciate the efforts. It feels like 90% of all humans struggle with this. Even further is _"Ganon",_ with people seemingly *always* adding an extra N.
Honestly, Mipha has always been my least favourite champion because I just never found her very interesting. She just seemed like the “love interest” and nothing else. Her entire personality was that she was “nice” and she seemed very two-dimensional. Now I see that she actually had passion for protecting other people, and she wasn’t just some nice girl with healing powers. Really makes me wish that they kept the first-person entries in the english version of the game.
I feel the same way! During the making of this video I really noticed my opinion on Mipha change quite drastically. There is much more to her character than just being a love interest to Link like you said. Personally I feel the English version waters her personality down a little and emphasises how she's "devoted" to her "mission". Whereas in Japanese, all she wants to do is protect everyone (not just Link).
@@QuestWithAaron Her character still seems a bit flat to me but I can see so much potential that could be expanded on in the future, but probably won’t be. I did notice that she had much more personality in Age of Calamity than she does in BotW!!
Seems like we are the minority, my friend. I do not like Mipha at all, her whole personality be around her love for Link is really lame. Personally, i think the fact she wants to propose to Link without even know his feelings is kinda disgusting (people insisting she and Link were in a relationship seems to purposely ignoring the part where she says she's jealous of Zelda and Link trusting Zelda more than anyone to talk about his feelings. Heck, he even seems to trust Daruk more than Mipha). She's sooooo much better in AOC, she actually has a personality.
@@kahp1072 Thank your bringing up the fact that she seems obsessed with Link. I also agree with that, although I never mentioned it. That was a huge mistake on the developers’ part I feel. They could’ve given Mipha more reason to be in love with Link, like more entries in her diary for instance, but it really just seems like she saw him fight, and then just became infatuated with him and decided to propose to him without any sort of relationship between them at all. In fact, it doesn’t even seem like he even knew about her feelings. In most of the cutscenes where both characters are present (including AOC) she acts really nervous around him, clearly indicating that they were not romantically involved. Ever.
The Age of calamity lore shows that this different-from-botw timeline was saved, and no-one (important) died. Mipha already prepared the Zora Armor before the calamity, so I'd guess in the Age of calamity timeline Mipha would propose to link shortly after the events. Which is a really cute idea by the way.
I kind of hope for an aoc 2 that starts 5y later with link and mipha preparing their wedding when ganon's corpse and king shitdad both start causing trouble. thus starting the plot
@@antoinelambert938 Don't think Rhoam will be an issue considering Zelda has al awakened her power now, but I would like for them to interact more and talk about things that happened between them and talk more about Zelda's mother because it seems Zelda may not have gotten the chance to properly mourn her due to the unyielding pressures of awakening to her power.
@@derrickdaniels3955 I too would love interactions and to see stuff about her mom, but also link's family and mipha's mom. that said kind shitdad is so bad a parent he doomed the kingdom, hence why his bad parenting or other bad decisions could come in play, maybe he search for a way to rule longer and end up possessed by a male gerudo mask once made by using the majora song of healing on ganondorf. Point is he is a perfect fit for an antagonist... heck maybe between link's heroism and upcoming marriage to mipha, the various races and many hylians want king whale to become the ruler of all hyrule so link and mipha become the next in line and now king shitdad wants to keep is power.
@@antoinelambert938 I think if Nintendo were to have any legitimate confirmation that Link got together with Mipha, it would have to be REALLY SUBTLE. Think of something along the lines of having the Zora Armor appear as an Easter egg in the back of Link's closet or maybe Mipha is a lot more open about her feelings towards Link. When it comes to Link you can't really have him commit to anyone. Also having King Roahm as a villain... Kinda makes sense. I mean seriously, WHY THE HELL DID HE ORDER LINK TO NOT FIGHT GANNON?!? The King has been telling Zelda she needs to above all else commit to the cause against Gannon FOR AROUND A DECADE, but when Gannon actually does show up, HE TELLS THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE WHO THE FATES SAY CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE THREAT, TO AVOID CONFRONTATION?!? WHAT CONVINCED HIM TO GO 180 ON HIS MORALS?!? In the words of Alex Yu: "I let you persuade me, and now your gonna throw it all away? Stop and think, FOR ONE GODDAM SECOND MORGAN!!!"
@@antoinelambert938 nah, Nintendo is clearly trying to head into zelink in both TotK and AoC. It’s sad, but there probably won’t be anything substantial towards link and mipha going forward.
I also feel like when Mipha said “That person… The princess… Save her.” She might have been referring back to what she said in memory #15 when trying to give advice to Zelda: “I was thinking about what I do when I’m healing, you know, what usually goes through my mind… it helps when I think, when I think about-“ we can assume that she was going to say “the person that I love/care for” and she told link to protect that “person”. I dunno if this will make much since but just wanted to share for all who gets it :)
I'm honestly sad at how the English version was held back in passion when it came to dialogue and quest entries to me I never really minded it cause the story was great on its own but knowing the bits and pieces they decided to leave makes me sad 😔 the experience and journey of BOTW was something ill never forget and it's crazy even now it's been years since BOTW came out I'm still learning more about the game which is a huge reason for why it was one of my all time favorites 😄 I truly thank you for this video and the for the spark you ignited on me once again to hop back on BOTW you sir have a wonderful rest of your day 👍
Yeeees. I love Mipha so this can only be great to know One of my existential questions since the beginning of the game (I ended up in Zora's domain first) was whether Link loved her back or not (What a sense of priorities when a entire kingdom is on the brink of disaster) and it's still reassuring to know that she had her chances (Though horribly sad) The fact that Mipha was cut off in her sentence by Ganon makes me hate him more than anything. Because in the end... It's thanks to the same reasoning as Mipha's that Zelda unlocks the seal. AT THE MOMENT WHEN EVERYONE IS DEAD. While she always did everything to unlock it and suffered a million criticisms for it, it had to be unlocked a second too late because Ganon prevented Mipha from speaking. grblblblblblb. Thanks for the infos and glad I inspired this!
Link loves whoever the player wants him to love I think, that's why the developers made him silent. He's a reflection of the player. But yes my Link would go with Mipha, but someone elses Link might choose Zelda or whatever.
It broke my heart when I learned that Mipha wanted to marry Link, but couldn't because she fell during the calamity. I always believed Link had feelings for her, too, given his reaction to remembering his time with her. The Japanese version helps solidify that belief.
it solidified it for me in just the main game when both sidon said to muzu that you can see the look in links eyes when remembering her, and that he even tells link that they were close to even being brother in laws with no objection. it was clear what his choices to be if things worked out....which is why we have a failed champions timeline because if we went down continously the age of calamity timeline it would've happened because mipha was saved
While the German translation did a lot of things better than the English one (which is really horrible. I mean, seriously.), sadly the entry’s in the questlog are still in second person. I really don’t understand why. It would‘ve given Link so much character. That’s one of the things people mostly complain about this game. Links character. And yet, we had it, only in the wrong languages. Here’s me, hoping that they will fix that issue in the sequel and we actually get a well written diary.
One thing is certain: For every Zora Princess who has presented Armor to the Hero, not one was able to settle down with him. We all think of the three souls bound together in rebirth, but the sorrow and loss of the Zora Princess seems to also be fated.
Translating Mipha’s words from “I want/wish” to “I must” actually emphasizes her strong desires and willpower. If the English translation had left it as “wish,” she would have actually sounded less determined and more uncertain. In this instance, translating her words to “I must” is actually more true to the Japanese version because it reaffirms her conviction and compassion without sounding wistful. [edited to correct typos]
I feel like the reason Mipha didn’t give Link the armor when she made it is because despite having a plan their future was still uncertain. My guess is she was holding it until after the Calamity was taken down if they had both survived (which unfortunately didn’t happen) rather than give it sooner Thank you so much for your hard work in giving us direct translations! I wish they had kept them in bc they really flesh out her character, what a shame they decided not to 😭
I personally think Link and Mipha would’ve been a great couple, they were friends since childhood, and had a good relationship together. People say Link and Zelda belong together, but they forget that HES ONLY HER APPOINTED KNIGHT. Also Mipha made Link the ZORA’S armor, meaning that they may have had a thing, cuz I don’t think Mipha would’ve made that unless she knew how Link felt
But about Link and Zelda, I agree: business before pleasure is what I got from both since the very first game. They both had heavy responsibility and duty, and had not the time to actually grow something other than respect trust and friendship. Nintendo puts things like that to keep players interested in the franchise.. but not necessarily because that's how things will turn out. They keep people guessing.. a smart business move on their part. The time line is one of these things, love interests is another.
I agree. Mipha is such a tragic character in this game. I do think she could've been written better but she's still a favorite of mine. I don't think the developers would ever put Link with anyone, but it is fun imagining what ifs.
While the English localization of the game does a lot of the dialogues bad something that I realized is at least better in the localization in my opinion when Mipha heals you after activating her ability. In most languages including Japanese, I'm pretty sure she says something along the lines of "I will always protect you" while in the English localization it is "It is my pleasure". While at first, it seems the other languages do it better showing how Mipha wanted to protect him forever I find the localization better because it shows that Mipha truly enjoyed healing and found it enjoyable to help others and that she loved healing especially Link which fits in with what the Japanese version says for her other statements.
Even though she's just a character in a game, the story of Link and Mipha is so sad and touching. Mipha is by far my favorite champion in BotW and in most games I have played.
I think he loved her in his own way, but likely not in the way she would have hoped. He likely saw her as a best friend, but accepted her feelings once he found out. Personally I believe he has feelings for Zelda later as they explore Hyrule together. I really liked Mipha though. Makes me really sad to see how she never got what she wanted.
The Legend of Zelda Is masked as an adventure game while in reality it's a bunch of stories getting sadder and sadder the more you look into them. Like this one.
Awesome video! Loved the addition of translations from other diaries, cutscenes, and even Age of Calamity. Def like Mipha even more after watching this video :') Thanks for sharing w us
I would love to see some direct translations from her lines in the Champion's Ballad DLC. I'm referring specifically to the 5 short dialogues that the player can hear after re-doing the fight with Waterblight Ganon in the DLC (One dialogue per re-match)
This was every bit as excellent as you promised, my guy, thanks. I've been certain for years that the localization made Mipha way more formal and demure than she was written to be, based on the passionate tone of her original voice and what words I could pick out, but I think the dub really improved with her in AoC. Did you check out the quest in AoC where she DOES give Link the armor? I'm dying to know what "It's probably okay to be wearing this. Probably." read as in the original context Awesome to see you're integrating the AoC text, too, as soon as we got the demo for that game I began reading all the second-person text as if it was Link's diary too, and it really makes the bits that feel depersonalized stand out suspiciously. I genuinely really like how AoC is localized for the MOST part, but I'm sure there's a "given up on reincarnation" level screwup lurking SOMEWHERE important in there and I bet there's all kinds of juicy stuff in its final chapters... I've got some theories on its ending reveals and I'd love to see if there's any textual support. On that note, too, as you go through this it might be worth keeping note of consistent mistakes that might be connected to certain phrases - I have a hunch that both Demise's "an incarnation of my hatred shall follow you" from SS and Zelda's "he's given up on reincarnation and assumed his pure, enraged form" from BOTW might be tied to the same specific word. If the Treehouse keeps making the same wack interpretations or changes across games, a reference to consult would help a lot and build a better picture of what parts of the story we've been missing. Sorry if this is a lot; you're doing something I've been itching to do for years but don't have nearly enough Japanese for!! It's really neat. Keep at it, man. Oh, and it might be really good for your SEO if you made some Skyward Sword videos for late June/July to go alongside the HD version launching. A whole bunch of people who skipped it the first time around are about to fall in love with it, and they'll be hungry for narrative details and deep-dives...
Thank you so much for your support again! I completely relate to how you feel with Mipha coming across as overly formal in the English version. Her voice, the words she uses, and the way she says them are so different in Japanese compared to what she says in English. Her words just feel like they have so much more emotion with them in Japanese. I could do a whole video or two just talking about that alone, to be honest, but I hope this video did a good enough job explaining it for now. I agree that the English for AoC is much better! Although I haven't analysed it in enough depth yet to give a solid answer, I too feel like there is some kind of a huge difference lurking around somewhere, perhaps on par with the "given up on reincarnation" example in BotW as you mentioned. Those connections you point out about specific phrases is super interesting too, you really have some amazing ideas! I can feel your motivation on this just from your comment alone! SS's Japanese text is something that I've been really curious to check out! Especially considering it's the first in the timeline that introduces the cycle of reincarnation to us. These videos take a while to make as you can imagine, but I'll definitely give SS a look, as well as more of AoC. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, they're really insightful! I'm also going to take your advice and make notes of anything that seems even the slightest bit off, as you never know when it may come up again as something bigger. As for the armour, I have checked it! I may include it again in a future video, but I'll write it here for you too. English: Custom armor painstakingly crafted by each generation's Zora princess for her future husband. It's probably fine to be wearing this. Probably. Translated Japanese: For generations, this armour is made wholeheartedly by princesses of the Zora tribe in the perfect size for the man who will become her husband in the future. I wonder if it's really okay for me to wear it? I've tried to keep it as literal and true to the Japanese text as possible, so it may sound a touch unnatural at parts. I'm not sure why they worded the English text like that, it feels a little mellowed out to me.
Quick thing I noticed when they all took the picture together, I SWEAR Revali looks at Mipha when what's her name tells Mipha to loosen up. Revali is looking at Mipha, watches her take a deep breath, looks and Link and grins a bit. It's very short and I watched it a few times to make sure I wasn't imagining things but it's there. Rito probably do fall in love with Hylians like the Zora do so for Revali this probably wasn't a big surprise. And being the kind of person Revali is, I'm sure he found it very amusing but didn't care enough to bring it up.
side note: the dialogue with Muzu in front of Mipha's statue changes if you have the Zora Armor equipped. Muzu notices that the Amor fits perfectly for Link but it doesn't change any other dialogue or his attitude towards Link.
I feel like "grace" is a pretty fitting word for Mipha's power, it's just that people are possibly interpreting it as grace in the sense of elegance when it should be grace as in the sense of a gift (think the phrases "god's grace" or "but for the grace of god"). It really emphasizes her generosity and good heart. I'm one of those people who thought she was suuuuper boring but the fact that it was really a "lost in translation" situation makes me consider her a bit more. Good video!
I did not think I would tear up over this video, but it's such an awesome reminder of how deep love can go and what that looks like for different people. Such an awesome topic to cover in and about a game!
If we read Mipha’s diary further, you see that she notes her feelings about the fact that Link is spending more and more time with Zelda as her Knight but she also worries about it. So, even with that nugget, I think we can surmise that Link didn’t have romantic feelings for Mipha OR, even if he did, he never let her know since Mipha had no assurance of his feelings while he was spending time with Zelda nor was she sure he would say yes to her proposal; she merely hoped he would, even citing Princess Ruta. There are a lot of direct opinions and thoughts about Zelda (wanting to see her smile, wanting her to approve of him) by Link in his diary that would lend to show his inclination towards her, but since Link is made to be such an avatar, the player can interpret that as they wish. Kass confirms that Zelda fell in love with Link so we know he’s got that cinched if he wanted to pursue lol. Either way, it seems it’s purposefully left as Link not knowing either Mipha or Zelda’s feelings for him. Maybe it’ll become clearer in Tears of the Kingdom. (Edit: I just realized you go over some of Link’s feelings/thoughts about Zelda in another video but this one is the first I watched since it showed up in my recommendations)
I wish the English version had kept the quest log in first person. Not doing that just takes away so much characterization for Link that would have been so cool to have access to.
I think Mipha's sweet, and she does have a strong will and compassionate nature, but I actually am glad she never got to propose to Link. I liked her best during the cutscene after you've freed her soul, when she's resolved to support Link whether or not she gets her happy ending with him. She even stands at a distance, and gently pushes him towards a future with Zelda and a peaceful Hyrule because she doesn't want him to dwell on his loss forever. Her graceful sacrifice reveals a deeper love than a simple childhood infatuation. Through her restraint, the creators made her such a wonderful archetype of a tragic princess, I personally wouldn't want to change a thing about her story. I didn't adore BOTW's Zelda as much as everyone else seem to, despite her being on of the most well-written iterations in the series so far. However, I do think she challenges Link in a way that's healthier for him. Once they are able look past their given roles, they clearly begin confiding in each other, connecting and sharing secrets they cannot reveal to anyone else. Although Link certainly carries affection for Mipha, I always got the sense that Zelda is the one he holds in his heart after watching all the memories. With Mipha, he remembers as a perfect hero, a childhood sweetheart, and an ideal friend. Her image is untarnished... Partly because she swallows her feelings time and again, never quite brave enough to take the leap of faith and be truly vulnerable with him. (This might've changed if she lived longer, but judging by her characterization, I doubt it. Note how Mipha is saddened to lose the cheerful little boy Link once was, instead of understanding why he has become so stoic and aloof over time. Yes, she still loves him, but it creates a bit of emotional distance as they grow up and change as individuals.) With Zelda, however, he recalls all of her quirks and imperfections, her joys and sorrows, her passion and struggles, and how hard it was for him to win over her trust and companionship. He cares about the little details so she feels like a real person - someone that you can rely on and support as your equal. Ultimately, I see a lasting partnership (one built on communication, ironically enough) if Link ended up with Zelda. Even if he wanted nothing more than a platonic friendship from her, their bond is undeniable and compelling. Let's say Mipha had the courage to propose when she had the chance. Link would've probably agreed to marry her. After all, who could say no to a perfect girl? Still, if it were entirely up to me, I would much rather explore the dynamic and layered romance Zelda can offer him - where the two of them must earn their happiness - over the static and straightforward romance that is presented by Mipha as a viable alternative. Under "perfect" conditions, the Silent Princess cannot survive, yet it is able to thrive under adversity. Life was never going to be easy for the Silent Knight and his Princess, and both need find the strength to continue forward. Wouldn't it be immensely satisfying to see them succeed together? These are just my personal thoughts as a writer. I meant to make a small comment and ended up jotting down a lot more than I expected. I hope I was able to make it clear that I respect both princesses, and have no intention to start a shipping war, but I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way from a story/character building perspective.
Just want to point out that people absolutely HATED BotW’s Zelda and only had eyes for Mipha. Still do! Even in this comment section, people are saying Zelda is lame/boring while Mipha is such a tragic character (as if Zelda isn’t one, by losing her mother and then her whole family, friends and kingdom because she took so long to master her power).
@@endlessemptyvoid I will say that I'm finding Zelda a lot more endearing in ToTK than in BoTW. Her design is cuter, she's more expressive with the characters around her, and she seems to have more agency than before. Furthermore, her story takes a uniquely heartbreaking turn. I can't imagine anyone will play this game without ending up rooting for her and her success.
Love this. You put it beautifully and really understand the story being told without letting a bias for or against a character cloud your vision. I find it a bit dispiriting how some people draw battle lines over Mipha and Zelda, often losing respect for one of them along the way. I’ve never personally felt that Link would have said yes to Mipha. Perhaps, as Mipha wanted, if they had been able to spend time together after Ganon’s defeat, his response would have changed. And Mipha, with her empathetic nature, sensed this, hence why she decided not to offer Link the armor just yet. In the end, the dynamic between Link and Zelda feels like a better relationship-one that brings out the best in them both. Still. Mipha’s love is deep and true. Maybe without the Calamity, she and Link would have fit better.
I always feel that there is a difference between link recovering his old memories of the champions versus the memories that Zelda left behind. Because the ones that Zelda left behind her own memories so what she’s feeling is not really something that’s going to be translated to him he’s just gonna have to interpret and since it’s not his own memory he doesn’t know what he in that moment was feeling either. However when it comes to him recovering his own memories he’s going to remember what he was feeling in those moments so that’s probably why he felt way more shaken when he was recovering a memory of Mipha
This video was really fun to make, and I too felt my view change during the production process. I had always felt like there was a little more to Mipha than just being a potential love interest for Link.
So basically in the age of calamity timeline since the calamity has been stopped all the characters survive so Mipha had the chance to give Link the armour...at least in some way theres an ending for them that we may not see unless they acknowledge this new timeline. However after seeing this videi my major gripe with the english version is the diary entries because they think we're under the impression that we will project ourselves into the game which we can't cause Link is called Link and his expressions are as exhilarating as Tofu. I hope BOTW2 changes some stuff about link if they continue to use his name. The japanese dialogue felt so natural like Link was experiencing this along with the player another thing i hope comes with the sequel now.
Amazing video! funny enough, many of the japanese texts remain similar in spanish, like most of her dialogues. But overall you made me change a bit what I thought about her. Her story is a bit tragic, yes, but at the same time I don't think that anymore. Yes, she died (as half of Hyrule did), but even after death she is still an accomplished healer and she's playing a huge role in defeating Ganon. Like you said, we don't know and we will never know how Link truly felt about her (and I want that to stay like that, I would always prefer the mystery), but Link is not all what's important about her character. Keep up the good work! you won a suscriber today
I've kept the translation as true as possible to the original Japanese, so it may seem a touch unnatural at times!
@@QuestWithAaron The questioning nature of the translated version is really interesting. It gives a feeling that Link didn't know if he's worthy of the armor. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it feels like someone asking, "Am I still the man she fell in love with? How did I feel about her? Would I have said yes?"
@@Theroha I looked into translations for a while, can't remember which language, (and it was Google translate) and it said something a lot like that. I think it was french btw.
Mipha was always my favorite champion of the four. First I love the Zora race (I have ever since ocarina of time). I even dye the Zora armor to match Mipha's coloration. Then I played Age of Calamity and she quickly became my most used champion. In the fire and water mission I played as Link and tore though the battlefield as fast as I could. Not this time I thought. When I reached Waterblight Ganon, I tore into him giving no quarter and after I arrived it never touched mipha again. Ling live the true Zora princess
Me too. I feel the Japanese version adds much more depth to her character... rather than just being someone who is dedicated to saving Hyrule and a love interest for Link.
If there's one thing that amused yet saddened me about Link and Mipha is the fact that Link seemed to unable to marry his Zora fiancee, regardless of which reincarnation Link was in. Of course, for this comment, I am referring to Ocarina of Time's Link. Even the circumstances were similar. In OoT, it was Zora Princess Ruto that proposed to Link. Yet when they both grown up, Ruto was chosen as a Sage and thus, both of them couldn't get married. In BOTW, again, it's the Zora Princess Mipha that basically proposed to Link. Yet, once again, Fate decided otherwise. Mipha perished during the attack and lingers as a spirit. So again, different worlds for them both and they cannot be married. This is an awesome video (^^) Keep up the good work~
Plot twist: Terrako was a Mipha x Link shipper. When he awoke in BotW and saw The Great Calamity killing all the Champions(primarily Mipha), he was like, “Oh hell nah,” and he went back in time to warn the crew about the future. He even went so far as to pull Sidon from the distant future to help Mipha fend off against Waterblight Ganon long enough for Link to rescue them. Thus ensuring she lives.
But yet in botw they all are now dead anyway, so what was the point really?? It's inconsistencies like this that I don't like. If he went back to warn them, then they all should still be alive in botw! Why they were killed off I don't know, but it was dumb.
@@k-dogg9086 Terriko could have saved the Champions from his timeline. If he can (Spoilers BTW, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED AOC) if he can Ezra people from the BOTW timeline then this means he could have grabbed the Champions from his timeline before they died and transported them into the AOC timeline before sending them back after everything was resolved. THIS R2D2 KNOCK OFF LEFT THEM TO DIE!!!
I cant wait for this content to come back to totk with the translations. Its really cool to see the other side of how link feels about events and other people.
You've got some great content. You're delivery is so calm but I feel like yelling curses to the English translation for you! 😂 honestly I don't blame the English translation for any discrepancies except for maybe the 1st vs 2nd person journals. The nuance is tough and we can't be sure it will have any bearings on the future until hindsight knocks. That said its incredibly valuable for the theory community. The lore is immense. Thank you for your work, you have my subscription for sure!
Could someone do a drawing, painting, SFM, etc. so that we can see how Mipha looks under the light of luminous stones? I'd love to see what Link means by how they enhance her beauty.
No video game had ever made me cry, ever. Until BotW, until when Mipha’s story came out😢 even her theme song, the main melody is mi-fa 😢 such a sad, tragic progression of notes
Ive been recently doing my second playthrough in Japanese, so I can practice my reading a bit more in a fun way. But I havent gotten to this part yet. Cool stuff! It threw me off for a moment too, because normally I see them use the more common kanji for 'thinking', which is 思 rather than 想. So if you think of it literally... the first character is 'to think' then you have the final character 人 (person). So the LITERAL translation is 'person I think of'. which has the connotation of 'person I'm fondly/always thining of'.
Why does the english version erase all this??? I'm a firm believer that Link and Mipha were in love. What sold me was the Zora armour fitting him like a glove. You can't know someone's measurements without getting in their space - I know, I'm a costume designer. Its a really intimate thing to be all up in someone's space and measuring their body, and you need a certain amount of trust because a lot of people are really insecure about their bodies or simply dislike the closeness. And the Zora Armour was a proposal piece too. And for the amount of time Link spent in the domain, he 100% would know the traditions of their people and be onto Mipha's intentions, so if he felt uncomfortable with Mipha declaring her love like that, not to mention spending considerate amounts of time and labour to MAKE the armor, then he would have put a stop to it. Then there's the fact that Dorephan and Sidon also have/had expectations about Link joining their family and it just cements it for me. They're both very explicit about it, and also, Dorephan and Sidon aren't crazy or delusional, it's not in their characters to be, so I don't think they would have had those expectations if Mipha had an unrequited crush. I truly think Link was about to join the Zora royal family before the calamity nixed him and Mipha both. Also, my Link hangs a picture of Mipha's statue in his house in TOTK so there lmao.
Thank you so much for always being so supportive! I really enjoyed AoC personally, you should definitely check it out! (And Link's Awakening too if you haven't yet)
These are great videos! Glad to know the Japanese version has kept so much from us English natives 😂😭 Knowing a little more about links personality is awesome to discover
I really wish they’d kept the diary perspective for the English adventure log, it’s a great feature. I know nintendo wants the player to project onto link, and that’s why he has no voice, but the diary aspect is too good to pass up.
The line where Mipha urges Link to save Zelda is even more poignant when you consider there were probably some feelings of rivalry toward the Hylian princess due to her being another potential love interest for Link, as well as someone he was bound to protect. That line becomes her letting go of her jealousy that now Link will probably be with Zelda instead of her to urge Link to do whatever he had to to save Hyrule. It’s possible that each of the champions had some darkness within them that allowed Ganon to infiltrate the Devine Beasts, Rivali’s jealousy of Link and Mipha’s jealousy of Zelda would mirror each other.
I just found it incredibly forced. Like come on ZELDA SHOULD BE DEAD, WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO SAVE HER SO BADLY? do you have any other last requests? You want me to get someone else next, do you want me to rely a message to your family, is there anything else that you would actually want me to do that logically aligns with your character? At least if you said Kill Gannon or something, that would have been a more logical thought process.
I always like Mipha in BotW, this video made me cry though because it added so much more to her character. It makes me wonder if Link only sees zelda as someone he works for and less of someone of romantic interest. It would be interesting to see what a Hylian Zora child would look like too.
I feel like Mipha deserved better compared to how she's depicted in the English version. I cover some of what Link thinks in some of my older videos! They detail how throughout BotW's story, Link just wants to see Zelda's smile again, he also really likes her voice!
I don't think Zora/Hylian children are physically possible. Assuming Hylians reproduce the same way us humans do, Zoras would be incompatible because they... Lack the body parts required.
@@liamdalemon1525 This is probably true by hypothetically if they were compatible. We know they are humanoid so maybe the anatomy in that area is similar enough. I don't think Nintendo is going to do a book on hylian/zora physiology
@@MysticWarriorMJ not humanoid enough. Zora lay eggs, not bear children. It's things like that that show how different their species are: Zora and Human. I don't get how ppl say that hylians married Zora.. we never got that conclusion from any other game. Just this and OoT. It may hint but not have substance. But, that's Nintendo for you: it's what the players think, instead of what actually is or could be. Confusing, but that's what makes ppl more involved and keeps interest for the franchise going. Though not really consistent.
There's something that made me feel a little better "every time Link is resurected3 in battle Miphas wish is being fulfilled. I'm crying so much right now.
Your final statement honestly better describes Link and Zelda. Quite clearly as you've demonstrated Link is emotionally intimate (and close and physically attached) with Mipha. His sentiments and attractions are indeed romantic, as he loves her a lot. Miphas feelings are crystal clear and indisputable, (for her love is well known). It's ironically Zelda, we'll never know his true feelings for. ruclips.net/video/siyy4FkiDv8/видео.html
I loved Mipha in Breath of the wild, and I wish we got to see more flashbacks of her. I think that even if he didn't love her the way she odviously loved him, he probably at least thought of her and loved her as at least a close sister.
Too me, Link loves Mifa like a sister. He doesn't see her in a romantic way. Link is strongly attracted to Zelda, which makes sense attraction would form from his job as protector and seeing all her most vulnerable moments.
Apologies for my mistake in calling Sidon Mipha's descendent when he's her brother!
Hey, in AoC he's one of the "descendant units", it's a technicality
Well, Sidon is younger than Mipha. If a player wasn’t aware they are siblings, they could’ve mistaken him for her son when they saw his child self in The Champions’ Ballad or Age of Calamity.
It's all good dude we make mistakes from time to time
When I first started playing botw, I thought Baby Sidon was Link and MIpha's son. #NoRegrets
Descendant could possibly refer to not literally but a related character or someone who follows after in skill and role.
Yeah true, Link having romantic feeling for her or not, we never know. But 100% she is special to him
He def at least felt platonic love towards mipha
@@venti2569 Yea
Agreed. Its clear at some point at least, they were quite close. I personally see it the way u described it too
Something else to note, this memory is set apart from all the others and is particularly special, because in every memory he recovered except this one, he had to physically go to the same location the memory took place. For this one, all he needed was a statue built in her likeness. I think this suggests that his memory of her has a higher sentimental value hence why it took less effort to remember
Well seeing a location he sees in his memory is similar to seeing a person sooo I don’t think it’s particularly special
@@cajunking5987 it is, because that statue was not there at the time he remembered her, and furthermore, the memory was not at that location: it was on the divine beast.
That means he recovered the memory from her likeness, not the location.
@@devildogkogg8353 right but her likeness was a location in this scenario tho
@@cajunking5987 perhaps, but here is why it's more advanced than the other memories: technically, no surviving relic of his memory triggered it. It was only a statue. Here's why that matters:
In all of the other memories, there is something tangible still standing that has survived 100 years, and he's not just recognizing familiarity, he is recognizing the exact landscape which is still partially there.
Mipha just gets more and more tragic. It's so sad and bittersweet.
i found interesting that in english it’s “grace”. i bought my botw in spanish and the word used is “plegaria” which is a prayer special where you’re asking for something in return of being so devote. i feel like that definition fits mipha better
Wow!! That's really awesome! I love how it sounds in Spanish. It really feels like it fits Mipha's character so much better as you've said!
In German its Miphas Gebet which means Miphas Pray and only now I realize that its translation has two meanings!
In Japanese it's prayer too.

So true

The English version made Mipha sound like a lovesick child, just doing things to get Links attention whereas the Japanese version made her a hero, doing things because she wants to and knows its the right thing to do. 😪 so frustrating that they changed it so much.

They believed that link still to this day is the player's proxy character in the world of Zelda. If they could've left Link's journal entries intact it would've been a fresh way of updating and immersing a player into the role of link instead you being link. If that makes sense.

Sidon isn't a descendant, he's her brother.
he’s more than 100 years
Man, I just cannot stop getting chills from this video, the realizations are incredible.
Thank you so very much! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
I'm honestly sad at how the English version was held back in passion when it came to dialogue and quest entries to me I never really minded it cause the story was great on its own but knowing the bits and pieces they decided to leave makes me sad 😔 the experience and journey of BOTW was something ill never forget and it's crazy even now it's been years since BOTW came out I'm still learning more about the game which is a huge reason for why it was one of my all time favorites 😄 I truly thank you for this video and the for the spark you ignited on me once again to hop back on BOTW you sir have a wonderful rest of your day 👍
Yeeees.
I love Mipha so this can only be great to know
One of my existential questions since the beginning of the game (I ended up in Zora's domain first) was whether Link loved her back or not (What a sense of priorities when a entire kingdom is on the brink of disaster) and it's still reassuring to know that she had her chances (Though horribly sad)
The fact that Mipha was cut off in her sentence by Ganon makes me hate him more than anything.
I also went to Zora's Domain first.
Very interesting find. I wonder if this can be found with other similar characters
@@monkeysgame172beedle
Translating Mipha’s words from “I want/wish” to “I must” actually emphasizes her strong desires and willpower. If the English translation had left it as “wish,” she would have actually sounded less determined and more uncertain. In this instance, translating her words to “I must” is actually more true to the Japanese version because it reaffirms her conviction and compassion without sounding wistful.
[edited to correct typos]
I feel like the reason Mipha didn’t give Link the armor when she made it is because despite having a plan their future was still uncertain. My guess is she was holding it until after the Calamity was taken down if they had both survived (which unfortunately didn’t happen) rather than give it sooner
Thank you so much for your hard work in giving us direct translations! I wish they had kept them in bc they really flesh out her character, what a shame they decided not to 😭
Shi man that's the saddest thing I've heard about this so far and it sounds about right oo 😭😭
Mipha: I'm so glad I can protect you, Link!
Me, immediately dying to a Lynel after using Mipha's Wish: 👍👍👍
I personally think Link and Mipha would’ve been a great couple, they were friends since childhood, and had a good relationship together. People say Link and Zelda belong together, but they forget that HES ONLY HER APPOINTED KNIGHT. Also Mipha made Link the ZORA’S armor, meaning that they may have had a thing, cuz I don’t think Mipha would’ve made that unless she knew how Link felt
She could have made the Armour because she knew he'd need it some day.. not just because she "felt" something for him.
So? Zelda still LOVES HIM
Having two princesses in love you ain't easy....link is having a great time I'm sure
I've always loved Mipha in Breath of the Wild -the cut scene with Mipha always makes me cry because of just how beautiful it is.
Even though she's just a character in a game, the story of Link and Mipha is so sad and touching. Mipha is by far my favorite champion in BotW and in most games I have played.
Last time I checked Sidon was Mipha's brother. Not descendant.
I’m sure he had a typo on his script or something
To be honest i always viewed defeating calamity as ganon having nothing to do with saving hyrule and everything to do with avenging mipha
That was soo sweet. Everything that has to do with mipha in a way is sad to me. Even sidlink when you think about it for a while
Yeah, it all feels bittersweet to me.
Link and Mipha's cutcene is the only one where Zelda is not present or mentioned in any way. It was just a personal moment between the two
I think he loved her in his own way, but likely not in the way she would have hoped.
Def like Mipha even more after watching this video :') Thanks for sharing w us
Thank you so much! I'm truly happy you enjoyed it!
I would love to see some direct translations from her lines in the Champion's Ballad DLC. I'm referring specifically to the 5 short dialogues that the player can hear after re-doing the fight with Waterblight Ganon in the DLC (One dialogue per re-match)
I know which section you're referring to! I'll take a look!
@@QuestWithAaron Ooh please do!
@@QuestWithAaron is been a year, found anything yet?
This was every bit as excellent as you promised, my guy, thanks. I've been certain for years that the localization made Mipha way more formal and demure than she was written to be, based on the passionate tone of her original voice and what words I could pick out, but I think the dub really improved with her in AoC. Did you check out the quest in AoC where she DOES give Link the armor? I'm dying to know what "It's probably okay to be wearing this. Probably." read as in the original context
Awesome to see you're integrating the AoC text, too, as soon as we got the demo for that game I began reading all the second-person text as if it was Link's diary too, and it really makes the bits that feel depersonalized stand out suspiciously.
English:
Custom armor painstakingly crafted by each generation's Zora princess for her future husband. It's probably fine to be wearing this. Probably.
Translated Japanese:
For generations, this armour is made wholeheartedly by princesses of the Zora tribe in the perfect size for the man who will become her husband in the future.
I wonder if it's really okay for me to wear it?
I've tried to keep it as literal and true to the Japanese text as possible, so it may sound a touch unnatural at parts. I'm not sure why they worded the English text like that, it feels a little mellowed out to me.
I love Mipha, and I love Revali. I wish the English translations didn’t change their characters so much… it’s such a shame…
@LoZ1212basically he’s less of a jerk and finally ends his rivalry with Link once you beat Windblight instead of just calling Link lucky.

One of my ships has always been Link and Mipha. It warms my soul learning this.
0:18 I was 100% expecting a segue into a skillshare/squarespace ad here lol
Yes, she still loves him, but it creates a bit of emotional distance as they grow up and change as individuals.)
With Zelda, however, he recalls all of her quirks and imperfections, her joys and sorrows, her passion and struggles, and how hard it was for him to win over her trust and companionship.
Thank you so much for this comment. Peak analysis.
@@emcards9919 Aww, shucks 🤭
This video really changed my view on mipha and Links relationship as young friends
This video was really fun to make, and I too felt my view change during the production process. I had always felt like there was a little more to Mipha than just being a potential love interest for Link.
As soon as i saw her in the flashback when he remembered her it made me want them to be together so badly
Please make more of these if possible! They are really cool and insightful into who link truly is.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm honestly so grateful for your encouragement! I'm super happy you found them that pleasant!
Damn, the translation team really went ''guys, lets strip the characters of their personnality''
Mipha's theme is my 2nd or 3rd favorite music in botw. Number 1 for me is "Riding". " Riding" has also helped me form a bond with my in-game horses.
I'm so glad that Link truly cared for Mipha.
9:50 god dam it even after years it still brings a tear to me 🥲😭😭😭😭
"i was awash in a pool of tears" is a better line then "i was crying and crying"
What the entry says bout that mission where we have to play as Mipha and protect Link? At the end the reward is the Zora Armor...

I've kept the translation as true as possible to the original Japanese, so it may seem a touch unnatural at times!
@@QuestWithAaron The questioning nature of the translated version is really interesting. It gives a feeling that Link didn't know if he's worthy of the armor.
Only a more admirable opinion of Mipha. I hope her character is used again more in any future game.
This is now my head canon.
You've got some great content. You're delivery is so calm but I feel like yelling curses to the English translation for you! 😂 honestly I don't blame the English translation for any discrepancies except for maybe the 1st vs 2nd person journals. Who needs a ring when you have armor
These vids are so good I can't wait for the next one!
Thank you so much! There is another on it's way soon! It's considerably longer compared to the videos so far, I am excited to share it with you!
Another fantastic video my friend. Can't wait to see what's up next. Better get myself Age of Calamity
Thank you so much for always being so supportive! I really enjoyed AoC personally, you should definitely check it out! (And Link's Awakening too if you haven't yet)
These are great videos! Glad to know the Japanese version has kept so much from us English natives 😂😭
Knowing a little more about links personality is awesome to discover
@@k-dogg9086 Fair enough, although it is possible that zora and hylians have married but never had actual children. So theres that at the very least.
I think that even if he didn't love her the way she odviously loved him, he probably at least thought of her and loved her as at least a close sister.
glad i found your channel today! you're great at what you do!
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words!
I am 4 seconds into the video.
He would've totally put a ring on her.
Ok now I continue watching~
I always believed Link had feelings for mipha. It just makes her death so much more painful.
Like a sister.
Man, i cried like a baby after beating the water blight and seeing Mipha's ghost😭😭😭 she was so sweet, my fish waifu
Mipha is the real mvp they could make a hylian Zora hybrid and the best love story (other than link and saria) would be fulfilled
My new favorite Zelda content creator!
I'll never forgive Nintendo for not letting Mipha (and the other champions) live. Ong it would've been so adorable to have them get engaged!
Too me, Link loves Mifa like a sister. He doesn't see her in a romantic way. Link is strongly attracted to Zelda, which makes sense attraction would form from his job as protector and seeing all her most vulnerable moments.
