Please stop shilling the idea that "beginners" should start with a western set. I don't know how to read chinese or japanese characters, and I had zero knowledge on how to play mahjong just a month ago. But in a matter of 2 weeks I can play with my authentic 90s era Japanese set without having an aneurysm over "wHaT NuMbEr iS ThAt?!?" Seriously it is not that hard trying to remember just the manzu tiles, and only the 4 to 9 characters that would take a bit of getting used to and memorizing. The winds and dragons...are basically self-explanatory. Green dragon...its the green one, Red dragon...oh it's the red one....White dragon...common buddy. The winds? just look at the table and compare the character. I don't think I have to explain how easy it is to know the other 2 suits....unless you can't count. In just 2 weeks, I don't even have to question what tile that is. People that stuck on the "WESTERN NUMBERED" tiles are seriously special ed, or just xenophobic to learning SIMPLE Asian characters. Those "handicapped" western tiles looks so ugly and takes me out of the game.
It depends on which type of set you need. Hong Kong tiles can be bought from box Hill in Melbourne while Japanese and Chinese sets need to be bought online. I do know that games world also stocks a small range of sets as well.
I have an old Taiwanese set own by my great grandmother. It’s similar to the Japanese tiles, but the set is the standard 144.
Where can we buy that kind of madjong table
