    Fantastic watch. I agree about Kates music. It does have an emotional hold on you and it makes you feel so much. Every time I hear Moments of Pleasure just crushes me. She is the one constant I've had through my musical life. So many great songs littered through her back catalogue. A one off and true maverick. I agree the Ninth Wave is a wonderful suite of songs. An excellent in depth video, Graeme. Really enjoyed it! I agree with many of your choices but the one I would possibly rank as high as No. 2 is The Red Shoes. It's criminally underrated and I really like Constellation Of The Heart lol. The Dreaming would be my No. 1, an immense and totally original piece of work. Again, a brilliant video!

      Thanks Richard. That is what I love about the vinyl community, the differing opinions that make you go back and re-evaluate records and artists. Although in this case I might not! 😊 I have thought Side 2 of TRS is deeply flawed and I have never liked a lot of it. The whole album is so deeply weighted to side 1. With you totally on The Dreaming and I would have had it at number 1 at many times in the past. Cheers!

    It's a pretty normal phenomenon, that the ranking may change from time to time. After 44 years, I still find things/details in each song which I like but didn't notice before. Depends on the mood as well. Our advantage is, that you have so many different albums and different songs for every mood. And there's almost no bad song in it, even her B-sides are hits or gems.

    Of course everybody has their own favorites and will disagree on things, but in my opinion "You're The One" is possible the greatest torch song ever written (in my opinion). Kate's lyrics and vocals are incredible and the song is topped off by the Gary Brooker's fantastic Hammond B3 organ and incredible guitar work from Jeff Beck.

    Hi Graeme
    Just caught up with this.You've done a fabulous job of summing up the career of an extraordinary artist.I'm not too familiar with her later work , but up till Red Shoes I'm reasonably ok.Kick inside would have to be my favourite. Like you it was my first forray into Kate and every song is a mini masterpiece..."I'll send your love to Zeus"..such powerful imagery.My other favourite is And Dream of Sheep from ninth wave..where she's struggling in the water and just wants to be released...powerful stuff.but Wuthering heights is astonishing. Apparently EMI didn't want to release it as a single, Kate dug her heels in and the rest is history...fabulous video,really enjoyed it mate.🙂

    Nice! Your passion for Kate and her music is tangible without being overbearing. I too well up when listening to some of her tunes. Not sure why, but there is something deep within them that gets to me.
    As you note, ranking the albums is a challenge. One wants to say they are all #1, though a couple might be #2. 'The Dreaming' as #2 mirrors my own sentiment - it is absolutely outstanding. True, the songs may not be as 'pretty' as some of her earlier ones, but they are intriguing and even magnetic in their allure. Equipping herself with a Fairlight synthesiser enabled her to take control of virtually everything related to the making of the music. (Peter Gabriel purchased a Fairlight at the same music show Kate did; same day, I believe.)
    Re: 'The Director's Cut'. You question the necessity of the re-recordings but did not mention why they exist. Kate felt the original recordings were lacking and simply wanted another shot at them. Our prejudice regarding those re-makes is down to our familiarity with the originals, so it is truly difficult to be objective with that record.
    The was no mention of the 'Kate Bush Live' (at the Hammersmith Odeon) nor 'Before the Dawn'. The former was accompanied by a performance video wherein Kate - with a minimum of production props etc. - turns in a commanding performance to a venue packed with adoring fans. I lose it every time I see the end, where she's waving to the audience and they simply will not let her go. Fabulous. And a great band, too. 'Before the Dawn' I purchased for my daughter (massive Kate fan) but have yet to hear. I understand their omission but for anyone reading this, do watch the video (on YT) of Kate at the Hammersmith Odeon. She was SO far ahead of her time, even using the fitted microphone and doing some great choreography, the sort of things that would - along with writing and producing her own records and controlling her career - provide so much inspiration for females artistes who followed in her wake. Brilliant!

    • @CrackinVinyl
      @CrackinVinyl  Год назад

      I only included the studio albums in the ranking. I have seen Hammersmith but don't own a copy and have before the dawn on cd.
      I knew Kate thought the recordings she redid we not what she wanted at the time of original recording but I don't think her new vocals did not add anything to the originals. The new version of the sensual world adding the monologue from Joyce she wanted to originally use was nice.
      The have been times in the past when the dreaming was my favourite and it might became my #1 again. I do love them all!

    • @MrCherryJuice
      @MrCherryJuice Год назад +1

      @@CrackinVinyl Interesting what you mention about the re-done vocals not adding anything. I have read the same in reviews. Ditto some of the remastering. But obviously Kate understood that she wanted something different, and possibly that had more to do with some inner sense of satisfaction rather than a tangible recorded outcome.
      I have the Hammersmith record. It was just and EP, so nowhere near the full show. The video, avialable on DVD bootleg via numerous online sources, is great. Too bad she hasn't seen fit to remaster that and do a proper release.

  • @wimvandemeerendonk4720
    @wimvandemeerendonk4720 2 года назад

    Wonderful video, the struggle to put everything in a top 10 is very recognizable. One comment I would like to add is, that I think her albums also show her evolution/aging as she grows older: from a (vulnerable?) girl with a lot of energy (Kick Inside, Lionheart) who then confidently starts to explore her deeper Creativines (Never for Ever, the Dreaming)
    to a mature and balanced woman (Sensual world), and finally slowing down in life where here music starts to follow the pace of getting older that you can here on aerial and 50 words of snow. I don't know any other artist where you can hear that so well as in the work of KB. I hope I made myself clear enough.

    • @CrackinVinyl
      @CrackinVinyl  2 года назад

      Cheers Wim. Great comment. Her albums definitely show her transition into different phases of her life.

    I don't get neither why people dislike the Lionheart album! For me, it's a legendary project and one of my TOP favorites- I agree with you, it's so hard to put Kate's albums from worst to best, but come on. Hammer Horror and Wow are Hit songs (not necessarily in a sense of topping the charts like her very first single, but more in a sense of their melodies that stuck in your head for a long time) and people sometimes talk about this album just like it had no big songs at all and nothing to be known for. Maybe they dislike it just because Kate wished she had more time to work on this one. In search of Peter Pan is beyond sweet... Wow is so beautifully sarcastic and theatrical- the music video with Kate spinning around on stage is genius. Oh England my Lionheart makes my heart melt- little Kate paying tribute to her own country. I won't even mention the cover- absolutely amazing (both front and back

    • @CrackinVinyl
      @CrackinVinyl  4 года назад

      I think you hit the nail on the head where you said Kate wished she had more control over this album. Kate herself is not overly fond of the album and I think this onion trickles down to the fans. So many good songs on this album. In fact I am going to listen to it right now!

    • @loveevh7454
      @loveevh7454 4 года назад +1

      @@CrackinVinyl Kate said in one of her interviews, that the artist should come up with something different while recording a new album. I think she's a little bit disappointed with the Lionheart because she didn't have much time given by the label to think about the ideas to create a new sound (as she did with Never for ever - we can listen to her experimenting more with the synthesizers). Lionheart is not that different from the Kick Inside and this may be the reason: she didn't want to give her audience a sequel to her debut album but something different. Still a genius album to me- especially considering that it was recorded in a hurry.

    • @TheHumbuckerboy
      @TheHumbuckerboy Год назад

      @@loveevh7454I look upon The Kick Inside and Lionheart as being equally appealing and similarly brilliant . The reason why I believe that Kate doesn't seem to have a great fondness for these albums is because she didn't have control over the production and she doesn't seem to have the best of memories concerning her experience of making these albums in the studio. I happen to love both albums !

    Good list. My album/disc list has changed lot over the years. But for many years now The Dreaming has been tied with Sky Of Honey at #1. Followed by Hounds of Love. If I separated it out, I would put The 9th Wave above side one, and maybe above the other two. I have also really fallen in love with Lionheart in recent years. I used to think of it as leftovers from The Kick Inside, but it is so good. Like The Dreaming, it grows on you.. I frequently make the seemingly contradictory statement that I think Hounds of Love is the best album of the '80s, but I think The Dreaming is the best Kate Bush album.

    I've been listening to Kate since 1985 and Hounds of Love was my favorite album of hers (and favorite of all time), but the last few years I really think Aerial is taking its place. It's the only double album I can think of where the second disc is just as good, if not better, than the first and where there are no throwaway tracks. It's just a stunning album and one I didn't think she was capable of after the good, but not great The Red Shoes and especially after such a long break between albums. Anyway, nice ranking. My top 3 would be Aerial, Hounds of Love, and Never For Ever (though on some days it's The Sensual World).
