In Ground Basketball Hoop Installation

- This is an in ground basketball hoop in ground, set in concrete. It's the first time I've done this and I'm very pleased with the result. Instruction call for a 18 inch diameter hole, however that would be difficult to finish and would be an eye sore. I decided on a rectangle concrete anchor. It's roughly 21 inches deep, 14 x 15 inches wide. I placed a rectangular form on the top to reduce the visible footprint even more. I purchased nine 60 lb bags of concrete and only used six.

6:00 Remove form

6:52 Attempting to raise the pole and hoop.
7:08 New plan to place the hoop.
7:42 Slide it all together (BIG RELIEF!)
8:03 Replace as much grass sod as possible to fill voids left by concrete forms.
8:15 Add the final touch, the net!
8:42 The hoop is done.
8:54 Breaking it in, first dunk, having a little fun! Final impression with installing.

thanks John! Going with in ground hoop was a good choice. Much more clean and "home" feeling.
I knew that was going to be awesome. I installed one of those things many years ago. Of course it was back in the day when I was doing the gorilla suit on a mini-trampoline halftime dunk show for the local 4-H club.

Great video! Our city has removed all basketball rims at every park thanks to COVID! Do you need to spray the springs with WD40 regularly to prevent rust?
Thank you! And sorry to hear that, seems a bit overkill. I haven't had to do that so far,and no rust. Perhaps the type of steel in this one does not require it.
I got a different model and installed it per the directions. I didn’t put concrete or rebar down the middle of the pole and the backboard is wobbly. It looks like yours is too though. Do you think the rebar and concrete down the pole helped?
The board wobbles with about 1" of movement. My guess it it helps a good about as concrete effectively doesn't bend. How much play does yours have?
The professionals will lower the board first, and then lift it up and insert.

I loved this video. The only thing is why put the goal so close to the house? Why not center it more in the driveway for the kids to develop equal shooting capabilities on left and right side of the rim?
Thanks! Several reasons but mainly- The driveway has an irregular slope due to cracked/sinking concrete. I put the hoop on the flattest slab to they can practice free throws with somewhat flat footing. There pro/cons & risks to anywhere in this particular situation.

I still don't know what it was lol. To my knowledge there is never sprinkler system here, and in the line that I cut there's nothing inside of it. 🤷

It was at least two. I don't recall exactly how many.

Next time put the hoop so that it’s at the lowest setting not at 10 feet and then you can just stand it up no problem
