Top mounted PSU has two main benefits 1) no more dropping screws into the bottom PSU fan intake (if you have it mounted that way); and 2) better compatibility with server motherboards - when you put it into the 10" rack it was like you read my mind.
Top mount PSU does nothing about rack compatibility IMO - it's more up to the fact that it's getting air from the inside of the case, and many cases with bottom mount PSUs support flipping it.
4:32 Just like with the Torrent, IMO they could've done a vented top panel so you can mount the PSU fan/vent side up and let it passively radiate heat (for semi-passive/fully passive PSUs).
@@matasa7463 That's a valid point for the solid panel, but still doesn't exclude a possible vented one as an option (in the kit or bought separately). IIRC the Define 7 had a solid and a vented top panel in the default kit.
@@xDownSetx I feel like most of it would go through the back (path of the least resistance), plus with an air cooler on the CPU (kind of the most likely scenario) the outbound air will be hot. Flipping the PSU fan up would've isolated it from that (if there was a vent on top).
Top-mounted PSU is the way of the future. You get airflow to your graphics card and you can much more easily manage cables for the PSU if you change something later (or even during the build).
I got the regular Torrent case in Oct and put a 5950x into it. It runs totally cool, has loads of room, so I can see how they could cut it down a bit in size but still have plenty of space and retain the great cooling.
Thanks for sharing.. and especially that end part of fitting in the 19" rack. Eager to see how you plan to mod it to make it work in the rack too. How many "U" does it consume? Though will admit wish the case was deeper for a tad more room for a resevour, unless you go with flat one on the bottom of the case.. which would also be cool.
Now, my only remaining question for this case is whether I should get it with the glass, or the solid panels. Can't say I ever have my motherboard's RGB lights turned on, except maybe with a very dim red just as an indicator of whether the machine is awake. Does glass vs metal make any difference for temperatures?
that looks GREAT!!! I love that case... I just wishg it had MORE THAN ONE 3.5" drive area.... I NEED a new case but the NUMBER ONE REQUIREMENT is that it has FOUR (YES 4!) 3.5" drive bays .... and so that LIMITS me to a small handful of nice cases, but they are ALL over $200 :( SO my other option is to find one with a lot of room and 3D print some brackets... like maybe print an adapter that fits those 2.5" drive bays so I can attach my spinning rust to them.. but I don't have a 3D printer :( - So I think I'm just gonna have to pull the trigger on this older Cooler Master case that is a different shape (sort of like a typical mid-size turned on its side) but it has a HUGE 240mm fan (not exactly sure of the size, but it is LARGER than normal) BUT IT DOESN'T COME WIOTH IT AND I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE!!! :'( -But I know it's out there somewhere, I just have to look a bit harder. And I REALLY don't think ANY "typical/run-og-the-mill" case should be higher than $100... unless they are REALLY special with some REALLY NICE features.... like this Fractal Torrent should NOT be over $100 (and I don't think it is, but I haven't checked the links yet) because it doesn't do ANYTHING to really 'STAND OUT' - even though it LOOKS GORGEOUS - I wouldn't pay any more than a buck :D THANKS FOR THE VID!! :D
What a stupid requirement. I mean it is so easy to fix. (if checking for older cases made before like 2015) Buy a Haf XB Evo. Or something like it. They are quite wide the box like cases. The PSU and drives shares the bottom of the case. And on the top side the mobo and stuff get feed by 2 140mm fans. Nothing to block them. I love the Haf XB Evo since I can stack 2 of them. The case comes with 2. 3.5 hot swap bays. 2, 3.5 bays internally. 2. DVD slots (5.25 or whatever they where called) Mod and you can have 2 more 3.5 bays. 2. 140MM front fans fit outside the case! So big GPU's fits inside the case. 2. grab handles. Still a big box but they are nice to have. And the motherboard lays flat. Love it. And love the box shape!
I wonder if there is space in between the front panel and the front mounting plate, so outside the case, inside the front panel. Just normal 25mm thick fans.
I would honestly be surprised if the rear fan did much at all. With all positive pressure that thing should have no issues getting air out. It may even divert airflow away from the PSU which would be helpful for units with a silent mode. Always enjoy your builds Wendell!
Wendell, may I suggest you start adding the Noctua NH D15 fitting test in your case reviews?, with chunky high profile RAM, those things have been the bane of my life with that cooler, the charts on Noctua's page can be deceiving and I would love to use both fans. Love your case reviews, are very organic, specially when compared with every other reviewer out there.
Back when bottom mount PSUs started becoming a thing most GPUs didn't even have a power connector (i.e. think of how much less heat they used to output).
@@liaminwales Now that I think of it, there was a time when most GPUs were passively cooled. Some of the first that required extra power actually used an FDD power connector, some others used Molex (the one that was common on HDDs and ODDs before SATA power).
If you have a 3D Printer, you could probably download this torrent :P Good to see a top mounted PSU though - being able to put the case where it belongs (on the floor) without worrying about suffocating the PSU on carpet should be a must-have feature for all cases.
i was thinking about getting this case since ive thought about getting a case ill actually keep for ever instead of buying cheap ones i dont even like and kinda suck
My comment got deleted giving an honest review of the larger version, WTF? Basically said it's a great case(Large version) but also the most frustrating ever in the past 20+ years to build in. Large PSU such as Corsair 1200w there is not enough room once you plug cables in especially the 24 pin, All crunched up at 90 degree angle just to rout them behind, They need to extend the front part of PSU another 40mm. Also they need to give us another 20mm cable management space behind motherboard, I had to screw the side panel on so the glass side doesn't pop out from all the cables, Once you fill the drive bays it's a struggle for cable management. SSD bay is too close to the main case cables so plugging in power and SATA is an issue, Had one of the MB standoffs machined wrong with male thread sticking out, To their credit they give spare standoffs, Just make sure to check before placing MB in case. Also would like to see another 2x 3.5HDD bays as the 2 provided is not enough for such a large case. Best airflow case out there, But I do hope Fractal Design addresses the minor issue in a 2.0 revision in future.
Ah ! I just downloaded the NFT of this case using snipping tool, it's mine ahahahah :/ nice case but too small for me, annoying that there are 1bio mid-size towers and not a lot of large cases for advanced custom loops
Love the lo-fi opening music.
What was the name of the song?
I appreciate the high speed high density review format!

It's more likely mostly about lots of fresh air to a GPU, which keep getting more and more power-hungry.
What a call back, no two people are not on fire
Lo-Fi opening and the title alone make this the best video I've seen today!
Bless you for the Strong Bad quote.

I think it was intentional, in order to prevent water damage from people spilling shit over the top of the rigs. Also it's cat-proof now.
@@matasa7463 That's a valid point for the solid panel, but still doesn't exclude a possible vented one as an option (in the kit or bought separately). IIRC the Define 7 had a solid and a vented top panel in the default kit.
@@KamenMinkov It’s expensive though. You’ll also need to add dust filters. It’s just a lot of extra work.
IMO with how much positive air pressure this case is designed to have, the PSU should get plenty of fresh air moving through it.

Very nice!! I was thinking of picking up the full size Torrent but this smaller version might work out better for me. Thanks for the great video!
Welcome to the short list for my next case, Fractal
Great editing again today. 👍🏻👏🏻
love seeing you talk about homestar runner that's epic

It's funny how things come full circle if you wait long enough.
@@robr4662 was gonna say, didn't we have top mounted psu in the 90s and most of the 00s
@@davey_projects2977 yes, yes we did. I still have an old Compaq PC with a top mounted PSU.
@@davey_projects2977 Yeah but there was zero cable management in those cases. And cases back then didn't understand airflow. At all.
@@tag206 but we got by. Usually by leaving the case side off.
I have the big daddy case. Super quiet for an all air cooled. I like the little bro better. Many thanks for sharing.
Room for a 2x180 rad up front for either of the Torrents would've been nice.
I like the idea of putting it sideways. I don't have a rack but I got shelves lol. Tall cases I gotta either put on the floor or beside me on my desk
>Implying I wouldn't torrent a Torrent
I'm very happy to see this case get a compact SKU. Might have to use it for my next HTPC.
I just bought the rgb version of this case with the vertical gpu mount can not wait to start my new pc build
Finally a company that provides airflow from the bottom. Way to go Fractal. Dangit take my money!

It looks like the top of this thing is slightly curved. That means if you put your drink on it, it's going to slide right off

Neat case! Now I want to see that thing paired with a 2x180mm radiator.

is that the "Boiler Snake" I hear being ultra quiet as it eavesdrop during your recording ? ? ? ? ? ?
I have that same CPU! It still runs wonderfully!
Will this case hold a NH-D15 ?
I liked the original, love that there is a smaller version.

I really wish the price was 'compact' as well
I'm sure those two fans aren't cheap. You can make some back if you sell them & re-use your 120 or 140's.
