I also don't typically like shea moisture products, BUT I really like their meadowfoamate and marshmallow extract silicone free primer & styler (something like that, it has a pink spray nozzle and a deep blue label). I used the mousse, but didn't really care for it....but could be my fault because I'm heavy handed with products. I'll have to try it again and use less because it is pretty thick and creamy.
@@BlackLabMama The first time I used it I used way to much and it weighed down my hair. I use a small amount but cote my hair evenly with a raking method.
@@InjectSomeCommonSense I wish I had thick hair!! Mine is thin and fine but very curly. Glad it works for you! We all have to find what works for our own hair since everyone is different. I love the cast it gives.
LOVE all the info about ingredients. It's so hard to find out what they're all there for and what the benefit is. I am totally on board with you doing an ingredients video. Thanks!!
I'm a wavy/curly girl with fine, silky hair. I can not use conditioner of any kind or I look like an oil slick, seriously. I also have to use fragrance free products in the shower or my scalp is very, very unhappy. My absolute favorite shampoo is Paula's Choice All Over Hair and Body Wash. No scent and it doesn't strip my hair. It's unavailable right now so I bought a bottle of the Hairitage fragrance free shampoo and it's doing well too. No idea if they are "approved" or not, but they're working. I bought a bottle of the Neutrogena shampoo but it seemed to take the curl right out of my hair. I use both, Aussie Instant Freeze gel and the mousse. They work well. Going to try out Harry's and see how it goes. Hoping the scent isn't too overwhelming. Anyone else wish that they'd tone down the scents in products?
Ok, I'm a 2b struggling to get my hair to clump, so I got the Cantu leave in conditioner and curl activator and WOW! That activator is no joke! Thanks for the vid and recommendations!
I would love to know why you don’t mention the CGM. I don’t adhere to it either. Thank you for all your information. I drove from the Amarillo area to get a haircut at Texas Roots Salon and Spa with Cassey and I loved her, the salon and service.
The protein silicone hybrid is a cross polymer, and you usually see it in vegan products because it's molecularly very similar to keratin yet is plant based instead of animal. The Eva NYC site explains this on their therapy mask (not CG due to Silicones like dimethicone & others).
Old school idea, back when the ladies used to use lacquer hairspray for their big wet sets, stylist mixed 2 tbs of baking soda in warm water, and it removed everything. You then proceed with shampoo conditioner etc. ;-) Love your videos!
Thank you so much! The only issue really is I strongly prefer to completely avoid fragrances. Do you have, or could you make, a video on affordable fragrance-free products? I like to be as non-toxic as possible. Also what are your thoughts on traditional hair care from certain countries such as India. Such as washing with henna, soap nuts, certain herbs, etc.? And I need to learn how to know which products I need and how to use thrm - which I bet you do have videos on and saw you sell a course or guide.
Love love love Cantu products for my coarse swavy hair, especially the curl activator and the define and shine custard! If you have access to the dm drugstore I highly recommend the Balea Winter Protect Mask - it contains lots of Protein and is very nourishing and the winter protect leave in milk
One of my favs is the Not Your Mothers Curl Talk Scalp care cleansing oil. When I have extreme buildup it refreshes my scalp and my hair so well. I found it even removed silicones as well. It also has a peppermint in it and its very cooling relaxing on the scalp creates a perfect wash day for me.
Another reason to not leave rinse-out conditioners on your hair is that many of them (especially the budget friendly ones) contain preservatives that are only approved to be in rinse-out formulas due to the likelihood of causing scalp irritation.
No clue if my previous message worked, but if not, then the *Shea Moisture protein Treatment* has 2 waxes in them! Beeswax and another one. They changed the formula, but they didn't change the ingredients on the website! My bottle definitely has these ingredients. Just a heads up!!
I would love your perspective on Trader Joe's Tea Tree line - from my scouring of the shampoo label, it doesn't appear to have any harsh ingredients, but it acts like a clarifying wash for me.
That Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil mask is actually so hydrating that it overhydrates my hair after only leaving it in for a few minutes in the shower. It’s a shame because it smells so amazing. I think the JBCO Strengthen & Restore mask might be closer to the “power protein treatment” mask but I still need to try that one.
I've tried the As I Am leave in conditioner and I am not a fan. It is not slippery on my hair. Actually my hair feels more dried out. Still searching for a moisturizing leave in. Love the neutrogena clarifying shampoo. Very gentle. Your hair looks awesome parted on both sides.
the cast i get from the harry’s gel is amazing for me. i always layer it with kinky curly custard, and it’s a perfect hair day. if i use harry’s alone, sometimes the ends of my hair are a little pokey. it must have to do with the “grit” you mentioned. i know kinky curly has aloe in it, maybe that helps me smooth the ends.
Hi Courtney my two absolute favourites from affordable brands are: the giovanni hard hold gel and the shea moisture castor oil leave in. I have very thick, course textured, wavy/curly, highlighted and dry hair (even nearly two years into my natural texture journey). I have eczema on the scalp and very dry skin - so dry hair is my natural hair type and not a temporary condition. My hair loves oils/butters and as much moisture as I can get into it. The thick shea moisture leave in works really well for me (I also use masks every wash as conditioner). I do like the shea moisture masks, but also use the maui moisture masks frequently. The gel from giovanni (when emulsified with water to help it distribute) really holds my hair for most of the week between washes. It also doesn't irritate my scalp which many of the highly scented gels do. I use a fragrance free shampoo from Boots (expert line for sensitive scalp) and whichever conditioner/mask I feel like that week. I'm not really following the cgm, as I don't mind a little amodimethicone in my stylers. I stay away from the heavier silicones though and do a deep cleanse around every 4 - 6 weeks with a deep conditioner left on for at least half an hour that day. I tried going completely silicone free for a long time, but my hair gets very tangled and the small amount of silicone helps with that. Best wishes.
I think this is what I need, some stylers that have amodimethicone in it. I've been contemplating introducing lighter silicones back into my routibe for awhile but I feel so brainwashed to avoid them. What stylers have you found that you like that have amodimethicone? My hair gets so so tangled and it's crazy bc I take all the steps to avoid that and it still happens.
@@THE_K_HOUSE Hi used a Phillip Kingsley styler for a while, but this Summer was very humid and my normal stylers weren't working. I'm currently using the maui moisture mask as a leave in conditioner (it says on the jar it can be used this way), their curl cream and the tresemme curl mousse. The mousse has some silicone and isn't as drying as gel, but it has great hold. This combo leaves me with fat ringlets when I use it and I'm happy with it. Like most curly girls I experiment with products. The giovanni serum I have also used has a little silicone and matched well with the gel. If you're worried about silicones - they're not all created equal. I have heavy, thick, dry and frizzy hair (type 2c/3a). I do apply oil to the ends through the week and a little to the nape of the neck where I'm always tangled. I sleep in a bonnet and with a silk pillowcase - these really make a huge difference. I hope that helps.
@@lorainemcgillivray77 I also have heavy, thick(I have an undercut just to lessen my hair volume) coarse 2c/3a hair. I will have to try that Tresemme mousse. Right now I just use Kinky curly knot today leave in with Uncle Funkys curly magic and its fine but I'm fighting tangles so badly.
FYI - as of 4/6/21 Ulta has the Shea Moisture Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment deep conditioner available online... it is one of my favorites too so I paused the video to see if it was still available!!!💜😅
I highly recommend the Shea Moisture Mafura Oil Deep Conditioner like you mentioned! It's very moisturizing and smells great. I actually prefer it over their Manuka Honey Yogurt Protein mask (but that mask is still really nice too).
Same! I like the Marfura Oil one a lot better than the Honey Yogurt one. More moisturizing and smells better. I’ve been mixing them together to use up my Honey Yogurt.
Having a beautiful wash day! Looking fabulous ~ I did like the Cantu conditioner- the only issue I had w/ it was that I did not use it soon enough & I stored it in the shower lid down & it soured. Yuckers! I ended up having to throw it out bc it smelled so bad ~ 🤮
Try alaffia products pls, you can find them on iherb or america I guess😂 they have natural products, everyone compare their custard to kinky custard, they have natural gels too ! 🤗
That Shea moisture protein power treatment absolutely has protein in it and is still being made... it has sent me into protein overload before so idk what you're talking about. Just because it's not hydrolyzed protein lol...
Cantu's Avocado hydrating cream shampoo/conditioner are great drug store choices that don't weigh down my fine-ish curls. They also have a flaxseed smoothing line (only have the conditioner which is listed as rinse out or leave in but is a bit thick as a leave in for me) which is awesome too!
That's really interesting about the Maui Moisture Lo-poo. I used without using ANY conditioner afterward (because I didn't have any) and just used a leave-in conditioner and my scalp felt super clean and my waves/curls turned out really shiny and pretty! My hair is also really thick too so that might have something to do with it XD. Love your videos btw!!!
The Garnier Pure Clean Fortifying Conditioner is one of my new favorite budget conditioners!! It’s silicone free, $6.29 for 33oz at target. Super slippery! It reminds me of the old Tresemme Naturals, before they changed the formula. Highly recommend!!
I never knew that regular conditioners are acidic. I have always left a pretty good slick in my hair so I never needed a leave-in. NOW that I know better, I will start using a leave-in, THANK YOU!
I like Biotera Alcohol Free Defining Gel, I purchase it at Sally’s Beauty. I use it as my final product, I get a great cast and when I scrunch out the crunch, my curls are defined and soft to the touch.

I defs would like to hear your thoughts on the CGM! I've been kinda starting it, which is how I found this channel, but I'd love to hear both sides so I can figure out of its worth all the effort and money.
I love the Mielle, but can’t tolerate the scent. So I mask on wet hair, then wash and condition. It doesn’t get completely rid of the scent, but takes the edge off where I can handle it.
Hello, Thank you so much for the video. Some of these products are available even are, in China. Shipped from overseas, but still. yay. I really enjoy your videos, and I also appreciate that you aren't using extra effects like sounds or anything, even no background music, which I find very confusing, distracting for me and making it difficult to follow with the actual content. You also use very clear language; explaining things clearly and directly and very well organised. I appreciate it very much. One of my all time favourites as a leave in is the As I Am Leave In. I happened to buy it just randomly, but I am so happy I did. i would be interested to hear more about your thoughts about the cgm. I also love your hair, you curly wavy hair!
Thanks for this video! Your deep dives into ingredients are so interesting, and I'd like to hear your current take on CGM and some of the ingredients banned if you follow it strictly. I've also been wanting a low poo that was gentler than the C14/16 surfectant - I'll be grabbing the suave soon!
I'm admittedly a bit of a Not Your Mother's stan, but I *love* the Curl Talk Shampoo for a low-poo, and the Naturals Green Tea and Tahitian Gardenia and Mango Butter conditioners on my 2B/C waves (and yes, definitely on the higher end of drugstore prices). Also cannot say enough good things about the Curl Talk mousse, and agree that it's a way higher hold than what they market it as! Also...don't sleep on the Garnier Treat masks, wow. Those pack a lot of punch for like $3!
I LOVE finding drugstore products that are not only inexpensive, but curly girl approved! 👍💚 I know you say Suave changed their formula, but does it not clean as well? Is it too stripping?
Yes I love the Aussie products they do play well with others. Love your eye makeup today❤️. Would love to know what eye palette you used. Thanks for the drugstore options as I’m trying to trim the hair product budget a little.

My hair really likes Curl Power by SGX NYC as a lightweight leave-in/curl cream. I get it at Target, it’s about $7 and it smells great-like a high-end fragrance (but it fades away once my hair is dry.) Thank you for mentioning how products smell-especially of coconut-it can be a real deal breaker for me, and I’ve decluttered products simply because I can’t deal with their scent or it’s strength. (For instance, the Shea Moisture Honey Yogurt line-they work fine, but I wish they had half or a third as much fragrance-it’s not a bad scent, but it’s too potent for me!)
I love the As I Am leave in conditioner but i use the blue one for scalp and dandruff. Its amazing... the shampoo is also great. BUT make sure you grab your leave in and not the shampoo when styling.... I've done that... wasn't the worst but definitely different.
What are your thoughts on waxes e.g. beeswax? The shea moisture yoghurt and honey one you mentioned has had an ingredient change in the UK and now contains beeswax. Is it still worth trying? X
I'm a fine hair, low density wavy. My hair is on the oily side (wash every 2 days). As an example, the As I Am co-wash is too heavy for me, it leaves my hair oily. Would Cantu curl cream be too heavy for me as well? Any wavy with similar characteristics, please? 😘 Thank you.
Your hair doesn’t look weird parted on the other side. 😊. Question, how to you have your hair cut? In layers? I currently have a blunt cut past my shoulders.

Thank you for making this!! Im just starting my journey with my wavy 2c hair and Im in my teens and dont have money for the products that alot of people use. Im also trying to decide what products I should use so thank you!! Also you look AMAZING as usual. please do a video on the cgm
The “recommended” products are expensive. I use what my hair likes no matter, I get them at Walmart.
Treluxe is a really good line that you can get at Walmart. Courtney has a video using that line I believe
I love YOUR eye makeup.....can you please make a video on today's makeup
I have the same opinion
She has a video that shows what she does!
Can you try Cake hair products in your next video? I believe some are CGM approved, but the curl cream isn't.
I love their mousse and I use a shampoo from them but its not CGM approved.
Love these products!!
One of my favorite affordable gels is from SallyBeauty. Its's the Biotera gel with the purple label and it is alcohol free. Give it a try.
I am in Quebec Canada and so sad because I did everything to find it 😢😢😢
LOVE all the info about ingredients. It's so hard to find out what they're all there for and what the benefit is. I am totally on board with you doing an ingredients video. Thanks!!
Yes would love your full thoughts on curly girl method!
I love the Kristen Ess curl conditioner. It has so incredibly much slip, more so than I've ever felt from any other conditioner.
In drugstore ?
@@karine8738 it's at target
@@9melissal thanks
Old school idea, back when the ladies used to use lacquer hairspray for their big wet sets, stylist mixed 2 tbs of baking soda in warm water, and it removed everything. You then proceed with shampoo conditioner etc. ;-) Love your videos!
Please please please do a video on CGM
Look back about a year or more in her videos. She has many.
The shea moisture protein power treatment isn't discontinued, I just got it at Ulta
Please try cake products!! Especially the curl cream!
I tried it and hated it honestly. The curl cream did nothing for me and had no hold and the mousse isn’t strong enough. I’m just a wavy though. 🤷♀️
Your hair is so shiny and voluminous in this video, looks beautiful as always!!
I love that you break down these ingredients. You help the average person understand this mumbo jumbo
But doesn't it help preserve my curls if I leave it in then so they don't go stale as quickly?
@@sadieadler4383 no, that’s what gels and stylers are for. Conditioner has no hold in it.
@@sadieadler4383 by preservatives I mean the ingredients that are there to prevent the growth of bacteria inside the bottle.
@@mariesikk That's what meant by it maybe I should leave it on my hair so bacteria doesn't grow on my scalp.
LA Looks Extreme Sport Gel, Pantene Curl Mousse, & new favorite Root to End Curl Defining Cream (Dollar General exclusive brand)
Love As I Am leave in and NYM Curl Talk mousse. Both are a little more expensive but they last a long time and work so well for my 2b/c waves.
@@THE_K_HOUSE I find pre pooing with oil also helps with the tangles. Best of luck x
FYI - as of 4/6/21 Ulta has the Shea Moisture Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment deep conditioner available online... it is one of my favorites too so I paused the video to see if it was still available!!!💜😅
would like to hear more of your thoughts on curly girl method.... I personally do not follow it and have decent wave..
I would love to hear more about your full thoughts on the curly girl method.
@@michmash7888 That's a great idea!
I use As I Am clarifying shampoo. It's gentle and it works really well for hard water and product build up. At least for me.
I found that shea moisture mask at all my local grocery stores last weekend and bought a new one. I don’t know that it is discontinued. 🤷♀️
Yes please! Tell me your thoughts on the move away from the curly girl method pleeeaaasse.
I never knew that regular conditioners are acidic. I have always left a pretty good slick in my hair so I never needed a leave-in. NOW that I know better, I will start using a leave-in, THANK YOU!
It is crazy how much goes on with all of this! So much information! And you are so welcome!
I would like to know more about you moving away from CGM. Also wash schedule...I love your videos.
I like Biotera Alcohol Free Defining Gel, I purchase it at Sally’s Beauty. I use it as my final product, I get a great cast and when I scrunch out the crunch, my curls are defined and soft to the touch.
That’s my go to in the summer. Curl Talk when it isn’t humid and Bioterra when it is.
Lucky you are 😉 would like so much to try that Bioterra gel but can't never find it in!Quebec 😳
@@karine8738 I drive to Cornwall Ontario, there is a Sally Beauty store there, that’s where I buy it.
@@shellymaither295 thanks !!! You have other products you like that are not heavy but lightweight ?
@@shellymaither295 Just look the one in Cornwall and it is almost 2 hours of my house !!! Humm maybe one day ... I don't drive since 2 years now bc of anxiety 😪 Thanks so much... My husband says that there is a Sally coming for buying for Quebec ... 😉
I defs would like to hear your thoughts on the CGM! I've been kinda starting it, which is how I found this channel, but I'd love to hear both sides so I can figure out of its worth all the effort and money.
Thank goodness - NON Curl Smith content!! 😉
I know everyone is doing the curl smith videos wish they would stop
Extremely stripping.
Don't buy it
Trust me.
The new formula is extremely stripping! I prefer vo5 kiwi shampoo for something in the same price range
Yes I love the Aussie products they do play well with others. Love your eye makeup today❤️. Would love to know what eye palette you used. Thanks for the drugstore options as I’m trying to trim the hair product budget a little.
I was curious about the eye makeup too! So pretty!
i found a line in walmart called hawaiian silky.its one of the best shampos for my tangled mess..love it.
Phyto clarifying!! It comes in a metal tube also, so huge plus.
Hi ! I'm a french girl and here is ont possible to find curly hair production in drugstore. Several online shop are dedicated for curly hair , but it's still un little expansive 😓. For clarify My hair , i use to do a mix with my usual shampoo and a little spoon of bicarbonate de sodium . Affordable and it's work 👍🏻.
Sorry for my Broken english. I love your Channel so Much.
My hair are 2b/3a and their heatlh increase with your videos 😍
I’ve never had success with cowashes, but now Im thinking of trying the As I Am scalp care cowash 🤔🤔
I just started using it a week ago and love it !
Did not work for me 😢
I would love a video about using sunburn aloe gel on hair. I looked it up and most of what I'm finding is aloe juice on type 4 hair. I have neither.
I’d love to hear your updated perspective on cgm. I have been recently enjoying Pacifica’s Pineapple Curls shampoo. 💖
Did you ever give Cantu a go?
This is what I needed to know. Wavy hair care on a budget 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Your hair doesn’t look weird parted on the other side. 😊. Question, how to you have your hair cut? In layers? I currently have a blunt cut past my shoulders.
