2007 was probably peak British society in our current ideology and methodology. We actually cared about our country, our identity, and our past. We’re definitely in societal change and decline from then on…

Great documentary, I know some of the people in it and have photographed this wonderful monument so many times.

Did they ever dig down in the center of the hill? The first phase of the mound may have been built over a buried chief.

Yes, early on in the documentary it explains that a vertical shaft was dug right from top to bottom I think they said in the 1700's

Slbury has a sense of being there forever..I'm sure in 5 000 years when we've all fucked off,it will still be there.

Plot twist....I remember the standing stones from my Neolithic Druid past life time. Guess what,....I'm back and reconnecting with them once again. So uplifting.

Many thanks to another brilliant presentation from Neil Oliver. I just wonder, after all the time spent in trying to find a burial chamber etc, if all the time, it was below the surface? All the tunnels seem to be at ground level. Looks like we'll never know. The people who built all these monuments must have been so ingenius.

I love the idea that people brought bits of their turf to add to Silbury Hill when they came to exchange seeds, animal stock, ideas and their genes to build alliances over the summer solstice….

12:40 i find the implication that people who dont use deodorant stink scientifically and morally offensive; presumably these people washed, theres plenty of water nearby

Yeah I was thinking exactly the same thing when I heard this.. it's a 'massive' presumption for all we know they could have used natural herbs and remedies, and I'm sure they didn't stink as bad as modern day people can as there diet was more stable & wasn't crammed full of all the processed crap with unnatural chemicals that we consume 🤔

I suggest that the hill was built for the purpose of astronomical observation from the summit, esp. heliacal risings of stars to establish exact dates in the calender year. (Incidentaly much more accurately than in our recent millenia) The hill would have raised the observer nearer the level of surrounding hills to give a more meaningful horizon.

It’s so sad to see Neil Oliver as a normal enthusiastic young man, a great example for young Britons who were interested in the history and geography of their country. Such a shame that life dealt him such an unfair hand and he turned into the pro Brexit, Covid denying, ranting right wing populist journalist of today. A fall from grace of a scale shared by few.

I've a question.. what did they do with all of the excavated material from the tunnels that were previously dug into silbury hill? And was this material sourced and put back in as it should have been or did they simply just back fill it with anything they could source???

Looks like it had some structure on top, because it's flat on top, unless that was a modern engineering work. There's also a road going up, and unless it's modern, was a way to get up, perhaps to the structure. What gives credence to this theory are the 50 or so sets of human bones found in the long barrow suggests to me a chieftain's family buried there over many generations. Perhaps Silbury Hill was the descendant's hill fort. Of course, it's all speculation.

There was a woman that appeared on film to witness that her father remembered seeing a stone on top and the hill forming a pinacle. This "stone"had lines engraved, and was named an oggm stone. it is now in one of these strange untouchables bed spaces? Like the Spielberg film'raiders of the lost ark'. Shame on them you destroyed the lives of the creatures you came to fill with lies. And never lifted a thing to earn the respect of those that cared for them. You should shudder and originate. Stuart

There's a nice video on RUclips about a theory that this and other mounds on the Levels (Silbury and Glastonbury Tor are the best known but there's lots of small ones) are naturally occurring mounds caused by upwelling Springs, from a time when the whole area was wetlands.
