    6 months after this video I'm still able to order these bits and did order a variety of the Matrix Carbide bit. Thanks Vince for the info, I intend to try my hydraulic impact driver with these bits and see if that reduces failures. We'll see. I still like the idea of low wear.

    never heard of a universal fit bit (fits any tool with 1/4 hex drive) that has a specific material use. especially when the manufacturer showed bigger screws and harder materials. than they said they were designed for. somebody screwed up somewhere.

    The New 50x bits are the best out there I've used so far. I just bought the 55 piece set with the socket adaptors and 3 different magnetic bit holders. Good variety of different size bits in the set for $40 and they are definitely more durable than any driver bits I've used, the new 50x Dewalt ones are good also. 👌

    Vince,
    Milwaukee’s customer service is great! I bought the shockwave impact duty bits and snapped 3 in a 5 minute period installing some self tapping screws. I thought they had the same lifetime warranty as the carbide matrix bits and sent a claim through email with pictures and a receipt and they still sent me new bits even though they weren’t covered! They said they expect them to last longer than they did (purchased not even 2 months ago) and mailed me new bits! The process only took less than 7 days!!! It was awesome how they took care of me and that’s why I’ll stay a Milwaukee customer!

      VCG Construction filed the warranty through the email and never received anything. I did like that the tips lasted so they wouldn’t strip but they did break with heave use on a daily bases.

    I love that you threw the M12 out there.. was that the surge?
    The thing with these kinds of bits is, they are ALL disposable. When I’m busy, I’m hard on stuff. If it breaks too soon, I don’t buy those again. If it lasts, I try to remember and buy those again. There’s always a “Latest and Greatest”, but when your driving stuff day after day it’s gonna break. ✌🏼

    I own some of these matrix carbine bits and they are great for what I need them for. I had them since they came out and I'm still on my first bit. I see some people saying they broke them after only a few screws and I wonder what they are doing wrong but what ever I'm keeping them till they give out.. Peace VCG

  • @ThisTall

    Only broke the tip off 2-3 bits in 30 years. Some are certainly better then others but in my opinion the problem lies more in the screws then the bits. At least for eventual rounding of the bit due to constant stripping of crap fasteners.

    Honestly, I really liked the Matrix bits. I broke the first few that I had pretty quickly but they all broke under high torque applications. After watching your video regarding the intended applications, I altered my use and haven't broken one since. With proper use, the tips last forever! It's a shame that Milwaukee screwed up on the marketing side of things because the product is great, just really misrepresented and misunderstood.

    Hi Vince,
    Well at least milwaukee discounted a poor product and is not afraid to admit it
    This only proves that milwaukee listens and respect the customer feed back (negative or positive). This is why a few people are changing tool brand to milwaukee. Great warranty, great products, customer support and always improving their products.
    All company create a product that seems great at first but then fails That's ok as long as they recognize and fix it or change it.
    Milwaukee is setting the bar high for themselves to create great products and great customer relations. I feel like other companies should start implementing this philosophy to their company and products. Time for change.
    Thanks for the update. Good luck to all that have this one particular product.

    Not surprised after having used them for a while... they do have an amazing fit in screws but far too brittle. @@VCGConstruction Using an 18v Rigid Stealth hydraulic impact I secured 2 2x4s together using forty 3.5 in external grade screws. I stripped 3 out going in and putting extreme downward pressure on them managed to get all three back out with a lot of grinding. The result was the tip of the matrix carbide phillips head suffered 1 chipped flute. The chip was about 1 mm x 1mm. So not a catastrophic failure but it did chip. Even with the less violet impact of the hydraulic driver these bits will fracture.

If I buy an impact rated #2 philips bit, I expect it to hold up to any fastener with a #2 philips head used in its intended purpose for a reasonable amount of time in an impact driver. It's a shame they couldn't get it right, they were nice bits.

  • @ShowStopper47
    @ShowStopper47 5 лет назад +5

    I have 6 of these, only 2 in use and they have worked very well for me. Atleast a thousand or more screws between them both. I love them. Have had great luck. I use them on aircraft hardware mostly machine screws that are Stainless, cad plated and some titanium.
    They hold a sharp edge and work great for screws that a previous tech slipped in and damaged the screw heads. Even after multiple uses they grip exceptionally well. I figure I would have gone through Atleast 8-10 standard (wera) bits.
    The hardness of the carbon in them makes them ridged and limits the flex. When removing machine screws with an impact, they transfer that breakaway torque/impact to the screw rather than absorb like a mild steel bit does.
    Very upsetting they got ridiculed due to what seems as operator error in most cases. ( And Advertising ). There is an art to removing and driving screws with an impact.

    • @strangerofthe2067
      @strangerofthe2067 5 лет назад +3

      Scott Davis well said. Best post I’ve read in these comments, and also very correct. There is some skill involved when driving and removing ANY type of screw with an impact, and there’s definitely people out there, and in these comments, that think you should just be able to impact the hell out of a screw without anything happening to it. I’m sure there was tons of operator error involved here, and reading some of these comments totally confirms that. Anyway, great post my friend!

      Problem is, the packaging isn’t clear on intended use!

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 5 лет назад

      The intend use is driving screws. They just weren't good at driving screws, and then they had to say, "they're for low load/high wear applications," instead of saying they're too brittle. A low load situation is a low wear situation. There's no such thing as low load/high wear. The ONLY time a bit is subject to high wear, is if you're stripping out the fastener and spinning the bit in the fastener. And that shouldn't happen. (It doesn't happen to anyone that knows how to use a screw gun. DIY'ers, home owners, "makers," newbies, etc, are the only people that haven't mastered th trigger regulation and proper axial pressure.

  • @sheet-son
    @sheet-son 5 лет назад

    I was skeptical, but only becusse I am an engineer. As a general rule, harder materials are more brittle, while softer materials are more ductile. Sure a carbide bit will hold its shape quite well, but it is not made for impact or high loading.

    Well this is an awkward sad day for shockwave MATRIX Carbide bits, & the marketing was a “little” skewed for ppl. Agree w/ ya there Vince. The good news is that the gen 3 (think it’s gen 3....) shockwave impact bits w/ the new wear guard, works pretty great & helps the bits last longer; especially compared to gen 1 bits. So, is there a place for the matrix carbide bits in the lineup, & do we need them anymore? Maybe Milwaukee working on matrix carbide gen 2 as we speak. Who knows....😉

Maybe they rushed it, some employee kept knowledge of the flaw for who knows what reason and continued with production and distribution? I know it's not incompetence from Milwaukee because they have the knowledge and financial backing for R&D. I know a company like Milwaukee will never cop out to their mistake, probably for litigation reasons or simply because of bad publicity, but I feel us the faithful consumer deserve better that their laim ass excuse of the packaging and marketing not matching the intended purpose of the bits!!!!! Let's speak truthfully, we all buy bits to multi use them for everything, and to abuse them! We all know that, so Milwaukee, please talk to us like we're ignorant 3rd graders! What do you mean, "... People were confused on the intended use." Low load, high wear? Even regular bits last an extraordinarily long time when you're not spinning them in a screw/off axis. So if their main selling point is that you can strip out the heads of screws without wearing the bit, big effen deal. If you've used a screw gun longer than a few days, and you're letting the bit cam out of the fastener, you should never touch a screw gun ever again. It's just not for you. Regular bits can do high load, low load, and the high wear (stripping out a fastener) is moot.

      I own both brands, but the truth is Milwaukee responds to thier users. Any brand can make mistakes, but Milwaukee has responded to VCG about tool issues. DeWalt hasn't responded on any problems, including the smoking impacts. That's the hate, big company that don't care about the end user. I will buy from company's that value feed back and work to improve, rather then silence and buy because of our name brand...

    To be honest with you, I don’t think Milwaukee new what was the intended purpose for these bits either. They should have did more testing with them before selling them and if you did want your money back it’s only right to give you that option.

    “intended use” is a typical Milwaukee(TTI) marketing cop-out. It is well known that toughness is desirable for ANY impact use, and TTI went with hardness in this case as usual. Who would expect a Makita gold bit to wear out after driving a whole lot of 2” drywall screws? This wear/load argument is a false dichotomy. “Matrix Carbide” blue-pill bits are brittle, as one would predict, so they break and TTI is left with angry clients and warantee claims. Simple.

    • @VCGConstruction
      @VCGConstruction  5 лет назад

      You sound real angry, you must own a ton of these bits?

  • @davidkoeppen3121
    @davidkoeppen3121 4 года назад

    They knew it was for high wear applications but didn't realize how poorly it would do in high load applications. If they knew ahead of time they would not have had issued a lifetime warranty especially without some type of disclaimer on the package. They got egg on their face because somehow in research and development they must have not abused them in the wrong application enough to get an accurate picture of its performance. I feel badly for you because you had faith in their R&D department as well as their reputation that you backed a faulty product through no fault of your own.

  • @1966johnnywayne
    @1966johnnywayne 4 года назад

    Lifetime Warranty on consumables...I wonder how many people lost their job with that bonehead idea. You can have the hardest, longest wearing bits OR you can have the toughest, fracture resistant bits...not both in one bit. You must balance wear resistance (hardness) with impact resistance (toughness), and Milwaukee marketing a "CARBIDE" bit using impact tools in their demonstration is just plain dumb. This bit had great potential, with the caveat that it IS NOT an impact bit. Know your target market...it's like the "few" bonehead mechanics that put a three foot pipe on a 3/8" Snap-On ratchet "because it has a lifetime warranty"...sure, but if you're constantly waiting for the truck guy to show up so that you can get a new 3/8" ratchet, you're not productive. The right tool for the job.

    Discontinuing this bit series probably minimizes risk of a lawsuit. There's no way Milwaukee didn't know about the failure rate during R&D and field testing. Marketing polished a turd and pushed it out.

      Why would they intentionally mislead people when they have a lifetime warranty and have been faithfully honoring it? There's nothing in it for Milwaukee.
