- I recently spent three days in Malta, and visited some really cool places. I took my GX80 and put it to the test. The lighting was far from ideal at times, but I did my best to make it work.

I love my little GX80. It’s the camera that got me back into photography as a hobby. Serves me very well at the moment. Malta looks gorgeous. Will have to visit some time.

The drone footage was awesome and the colors are so beautiful. Wow! I want to go there one day! Actually a friend of mine is going there shortly. When there are so many beautiful colors to capture I really cannot see the logic in desaturating the images. Kind of a negative for me, so embrace color!

There's so many places you need to see still! I've been 3 times and still haven't seen it all! You need to go blue grotto, botanical gardens, red fort, Popeye's village and the other island, Comino. Malta has a special place in my heart so I'm glad u enjoyed it. You've made it look amazing...can't wait to go back now! 👍🏽 On the 7k btw!
Atikur Rahman I did spy the blue grotto, I loved it! I haven't been to the others though. Its such an interesting place it's like every cove or town is completely its own personality

Hi Emily, I like the high contrast desaturated look much more than the teal-orange look, but I'm not sure if Malta with its vibrant colours was the best choice :) Love the panoramas :)
You did really well with the light, the images are fantastic. I much prefer the desaturated look over teal and orange which gives me migraines now
Love the new style seems to work well with architecture for me though it was the drone shots that really impressed ... looking forward to seeing more from the GX80 and learning from you I bought the GX80 a few months ago and struggling with it at the mo I have the G80 which I adore and that may be why I am struggling

Looks lovely, excellent job with the lighting conditions and minimal gear. I love the blue building shot and all your drone photos are killer. This new style is cool for street which I like to shoot a lot of. I like it a lot. Wish I knew how to fly a drone for topside images. I suppose I could hire an operator then pull the photos from the footage. Well done.
Malta is certainly a great place for photos, but March is a great time a the light is great.

I love Malta so much, I went 11 times growing up, long time ago now though. I plan on going back next year, I think I'll have a completely different appreciation if it now, especially in a photography sense :)

Malta looks like a beautiful spot. Considering it was a "family" trip for you, you have produced some lovely images. Although your new and old "style" are good, I love to see places where they have vibrant colors. Every time I see images of the UK where all the houses are the same drab dirty brick color, I want to shout at the screen "buy some paint!". (I was born & raised in the London area but moved to the US many years ago.)
John McFarland so true haha the UK is just grey and brown 80% of the time!
Beauty shots I like this style better than the teal and orange not saying they weren't nice either but I like this better. Great work I loved the shots with the dogs that was neat and that overhead abstract shot made me stop and stare at it to see what was going on ;)
That aerial panorama tho ++++++
You could chat about anything at all and make it interesting. Lovely photos. And who doesn't get sick of everyone else dialing saturation up to 11?
We were in Malta last summer and I think I enjoyed most Blue Grotto and the tiny streets in "northern part" of Valletta. :)
Pandiro aah yes the blue grotto was wonderful!! I didn't get many good photos but I got some good video with the gimbal, which ive saved for the Crane M review. The water was really choppy it was a good test haha
Saint Agatha's Tower in the North (Mellieha). Also, catch some daytime smoke fireworks... very unique.
Lovely images!!! Good job! Did you desaturate images in post-processing or did you set it up to get the images SOC?
If you are going to Malta again. I recommend late autumn, winter time as the light is gorgeous. (Don’t like that washed out look. Natural Colors are lovely.)Also, go see Mdina, the old capital- wonderful architecture.

The cacti at 8:06 are interesting. I wonder how that would do with full-on committed B&W rather than desaturated.
I do like your move away from the heavy O&T color grade. Some of the boats and dogs might benefit from bringing back some color selectively to accent the subjects.
The pullback mavic shot at the fishing area is great! The 1st pano is stunning with that sunset as well. Did you use the stitching built in to the dji app? I don't seem to get good results there.
Ryland Russell I didn't get good results either. Now I literally take a photo, move, take a photo, move, just like a regular camera, then stitch it in lightroom or photoshop 😁
Lovely pictures as usual, but, after nearly fifty years in the business, I REALLY don't 'get' the desaturation thing😀. The GX80 is a wonderful little camera - such a shame it has no mic input😢

Very cool video! Loved it!! I don't photograph a lot, but when I do its mostly on holidays. And then I encounter exactly the same "problems": bright sunny daylight and a lot of colors washed out with silver spots on leaves etc. So what would be your tipps and tricks to deal with this kind of problems, considering that I don't really know how to do much editing in post?
I currently use a Canon 500D with a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. And I'm considering the GX80 to have as a small camera to take with me more often and shoot more :)
tomzi thank you! Without editing too much in post, I'd recommend a good polarising filter to get your sky popping, and look for interesting shadows and use them creatively. Shooting mid day is really hard buy you absolutely can get great results 😊
Awesome photos, especially the Drone Panorama. Is that easy to do and... What are you going to do with the photo? Is it for sale? Do you print it?
+Daniel McCarthy thanks! It's pretty easy to do, it's exactly the same as a camera where you'd shoot, move slightly, shoot, move slightly, then stitch it together on the computer. Or you can get the drone to do it for you actually. I do have them for sale on my website (www.microfournerds.com) but I really want to get a panorama canvas print of it for my own wall too!

Ed Adams yes, it was the only camera with me. I'm super impressed with it!
I'm not particularly a fan of the desaturated look (mainly because we get lots of grey/washed out days in the UK and you get to malta and the light is like for a kid in a candy shop!) but I won't hold that against you =D some very nice framing nonetheless,
Did you go to Mdina up in the middle of the island? If your up for panoramas you should be Quid's in up there!

Tony Goldenberg Mavic Pro! And interestingly, Malta is one of the only places in the world that is basically all airspace because it is so small, but has no severe regulations. So standard rules apply. Line of sight, 400ft up. Not over people or property. And everything will be fine 😁

How do you settings profilé picture for colour grading?
Your time lapses look really cool! Can you make a video and explain your settings for the capturing and video creation (fps etc)? Did you create the video manually? I tried something similar with my G80 but the result was not very satisfying yet.
Thank you! I have a video that covers my timelapse editing process here ruclips.net/video/tFAavqCyNBk/видео.html I use LR Timelapse. The daylight timelapses I usually shoot one photo every 5 seconds. And for sunset/changing light, I shoot usually 1 every 10 or 15 seconds. I edit the photos into a video rahher than let the camera do it for me😊

Andrea Tiziani literally the gx80 and the stock lens! Aside from those dodgy photos in Gozo with the very dodgy lens cap lens! 😁 Super impressed with the stock lens actually!
i was in malta for 4 hours at xmas waiting for the connection to palermo and i went to la valetta took also some fotos ...very inspiring your images even at midday under the not so golden hour sun , thank you ;)

Look forward to the lens cap review, but in the meantime can you give the details of the lens cap? I was assuming you meant one of the two Olympus ones, but I think you say in the video £20 and I'm sure they're both a bit more expensive than that.
Stuart Nelson I have the 15mm f8, and you're right it is a bit more than £20, I got it sort of "thrown in" when I bought a vintage lens so I managed to buy it for £20!
Micro Four Nerds was hoping it was on sale somewhere! I'd be tempted for £20 to just buy it to leave on the camera instead of a normal body cap... Thanks 😀

For the GX80 video shots did you use a gimbal or was the camera handheld?
Gabor Bolla I used the Zhiyun Crane M gimbal, great combo 😊

Gabor Bolla I always leave stabilisation one whenever using a gimbal it makes it more smooth
I personally like the body cap lens shots... Just saying.

Thank you for sharing, I just don’t get it the cult following for the GX80, it’s size is great for traveling, but the image quality has not impressed me, maybe because I only got the kit lens 12-32… In general from what I gather, Panasonic packs it’s lower models camera’s with a lot of hard to beat features and functionality but lacks image quality real bad, compared to my 10MP base entry model Canon Rebel from 2009, the Rebel produces better image quality than the 2015 16MP GX80. Maybe it is not Panasonic, maybe it is just the whole micro third engineering design.
how did you edit these.....limited saturation and ..
Nelson zeledon a lot of the colour is scooped out, and I played with the luminance of the colours a lot, making the greens brighter and the blues more cyan. Basically I just spend too much time in lightroom haha thanks for watching!
I so agree with you latest comment- I have nearly stopped using the video in the drone but the pictures! I think maybe 5 of my best 10 pictures ever are out of that smallish sensor drone from the last few months! (insta @christian_travel_photos if you wanna see them)
Awesome!! I also have a GX85, that's my baby hahah all videos on my channel are made by it, although I've just got a GH5 :) Keep doind that great job and check out my channel once you have a chance
