  • Varicose veins, those enlarged and twisted veins visible just under the skin, can be more than just a cosmetic concern.
For many people, they are a source of pain and discomfort that can interfere with daily activities. At Vein Specialists of the Carolinas, we are committed to helping our patients understand, manage, and treat varicose vein pain effectively.
    What Causes Varicose Vein Pain?
Varicose veins develop when the valves in the veins that help blood flow toward the heart become weakened or damaged. This causes blood to pool in the veins, leading to increased pressure. Over time, this pressure can cause veins to stretch, twist, and become more visible. The pain associated with varicose veins can stem from several factors, including:
Increased Pressure: The pooling of blood increases pressure within the veins, leading to a feeling of heaviness, throbbing, or aching.
Inflammation: The veins and surrounding tissues can become inflamed, causing tenderness and pain.
Nerve Compression: The swollen veins can press on nearby nerves, resulting in pain and discomfort.
    Symptoms of Varicose Vein Pain
Patients often describe varicose vein pain in various ways, including:
    Aching or heavy legs
Burning or throbbing in the lower legs
    Muscle cramping, especially at night
Swelling in the ankles and feet
    Itching around the veins
Skin discoloration around the varicose veins
Managing Varicose Vein Pain at Home
There are several strategies you can use at home to alleviate varicose vein pain:
Compression Stockings: These specially designed stockings help improve blood flow and reduce swelling. Wearing them throughout the day can significantly decrease discomfort.
Elevate Your Legs: Elevating your legs above heart level several times a day can help reduce pressure in the veins and ease pain.
Exercise Regularly: Low-impact exercises like walking or swimming can improve circulation and strengthen the muscles in your legs, helping to support the veins.
Healthy Diet: Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the pressure on your veins. Incorporating foods rich in fiber and reducing salt intake can help minimize swelling.
Avoid Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Change your position frequently to prevent blood from pooling in your veins. If you have to stand or sit for long periods, try to move around or stretch regularly.
Medical Treatments for Varicose Vein Pain
At Vein Specialists of the Carolinas, we offer a comprehensive range of advanced medical treatments for varicose veins to meet the unique needs of our patients. Radiofrequency Ablation, also known as endovenous ablation, utilizes radiofrequency energy to cauterize and close varicose veins in the legs, providing relief from discomfort and improving vein appearance. Clarivein™ employs mechanicochemical ablation for the treatment of Saphenous Veins, combining mechanical agitation with a sclerosant to seal the vein. Varithena™ involves the use of endovenous microfoam chemical ablation to treat Saphenous Veins, effectively closing the vein with minimal discomfort. Venaseal™ uses cyanoacrylate glue to occlude Saphenous Veins, offering a non-thermal, minimally invasive option. Microphlebectomy is a surgical procedure to remove varicose veins through small skin incisions, ideal for larger varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is versatile for treating both spider and varicose veins, utilizing a sclerosant solution in various forms-visually guided, ultrasound guided, liquid, and foam-to collapse and fade the veins.
For deeper vein issues, we offer specialized procedures. Venography involves x-rays with contrast dye to visualize veins, while Intravenous Ultrasound (IVUS) provides detailed images from within the veins. Venoplasty and Stenting address blocked veins to restore normal blood flow. Coil Embolization targets pelvic varicose veins by inserting coils to block blood flow to the problematic veins. We also perform Insertion and Retrieval of Inferior Vena Cava Filters to prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs. Lastly, PharmacoMechanical Thrombectomy (AngioJet) is a cutting-edge treatment that removes deep vein clots (DVT), ensuring optimal blood flow and preventing complications.

Thank you Doctor. I have horrible varicose veins, my legs feel heavy, I get nightly cramps and I can even feel the some of the veins filling up with blood. My ankles are purple with spider veins too. I'm 60, is it still ok for me to see a specialist? Thanks.
