    MIYAN DAD KHAN SAYYAH
Miyan Daad Khan, known to literary circles by his pen name Sayyah, was not only a poet but also a wanderer whose travels spanned across distant lands. Born in 1829 in Aurangabad, Sayyah's nomadic spirit led his family to settle in Surat, where he would later embark on his poetic journey. A close confidant and disciple of the renowned Mirza Ghalib, Sayyah's affinity for exploration earned him the fitting moniker 'Sayyah,' meaning traveler. His voyages took him through the vibrant landscapes of Punjab, Bengal, Kashmir, and even distant Arabia. Yet, amidst his poetic pursuits, Sayyah found himself entangled in the world of forgery, an act that led to a tumultuous period of imprisonment. However, even within the confines of jail, Sayyah's talents shone, earning him respect and concessions. His poetic prowess reached unforeseen heights when an ode penned for Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee shortened his sentence. Upon release, Sayyah chose to retire from his wanderlust, spending his remaining years in Surat, where he authored notable works such as 'Sair-e-Sayyah,' a captivating travelogue chronicling his journeys through Northern India. Despite the trials he faced, Sayyah's legacy as a poet and adventurer endured, his final chapter closing in Surat in 1907.
